but CANON told as that 5D3 is kettle that makes perfect toast ... :)
Touché!

It will need a rig as our DSLRs need. I'm working on a project with a scarlet and we rented a full rig for that and yet, depending on the lens, it is too front heavy for my taste. Even for balancing on the steadicam is a problem some times... And by the way, BMC will be a problem for monitoring on a steadicam rig since I've never seen a sled with HD-SDI cable to connect on the monitor below, only composite/BNC or HDMI. Even my steadicam Zephyr only have this 2 connections. Perhaps they let the HD-SDI working also on SD mode when needed so you can connect the standard BNC of the steadicam. I hope...

EOSHD grades the Blackmagic camera raw CinemaDNG files
Alex Mand replied to Andrew Reid's topic in Cameras
I have MKII, MKIII, FS100 and work daily with RED MX footage. I played a bit with the files on resolve and all I can say is... Amazing! The wow factor is just unbelivable! I pushed really hard and could grade to a level that is only possible with red files and yet this cam costs only a fraction of a RED MX. Sharpness is there and skin colors are just "correct". I don't have a better term... It's a new world baby! I'm sorry for chart fans but MKIII footage can't even come close to this. And is just the beginning... This thing is a little monster! Just ordered mine today. BM did a nice job on this one. Bravo! -
Revenge of the Zacuto Shootout 2012 - Part 3 review
Alex Mand replied to Andrew Reid's topic in Cameras
It's strange to see how the 7D falls apart in terms of resolution against the other cameras even compared to the GH2. I really disliked the image overall. Well... techonology moves fast these days but is nice to see how good performers, cameras like the FS100 can be. Now imagine what the BMCC can do with decent resolution and no banding, aliasing and good colours... Zacuto's tests nexts year will be really interesting... -
No ND filters?? WTF... This is an event camera right? An ENG cam right? With proper XLRs, zoom servo and shoulder pad right? So...Where is the ND switch on the side close to the sensor???? I use it all the time with my EX3 when needed. It's a MUST HAVE! I will ahve to stop down the iris or go crazy the shutter? Oww... Reallyyy good for an ENG cam... tssss... Oh god Sony... I'm out! Next boat... Perhaps the FS700. Let's see what panny has to offer.

Well, Canon said the same about the MKIII. That it was in development thinking as a true hibrid cam, remember that? I think that things will get hot with BBMC launch. Raw footage and 13 stops of DR. And now something amazing coming with the the GH3... Well... My only concern is the big investment on L glass that I did in the past few years... However we are living in amazing times! "Let the games begin!"

Most significant clue so far about Blackmagic Cinema Camera performance
Alex Mand replied to Andrew Reid's topic in Cameras
this looks really promissing! Skin tones are great and DR is really good... By the end of the year I'll probably buy one with an upcoming rig developed for BMCC. I will just watch people test it, find its weakness points, how to deal with its workflow, test lenses and so on... then its time to buy. Nonetheless, it is a great step forward! With experience it will fly! DOF is right on the spot. would be good to know what lenses were used on this one... -
Image seems really good! the last picture, the old man, well if this is a sreen grab from the camera... wow! But I'm taking this all with a bit of grain of salt. This is a camera from China and will take time to have retailers in USA and Europe. Also this will have to prove to be reliable in a number of situations. Well, I hope they succeed with the Kineraw. Perhaps in 2013 we will see this camera in the world market... Let's see...

Great footage. Just waiting for some BMCC tests (Charts, real scenes) to make my final decision. Interesting how far I'm now from a canon DSLR... FS 700 seems a great choice for my next camera, those built in NDs, proper XLRs, cine gammas, great DR, awesome slo-mo... Can I use an external recorder and capture 10bit 4:2:2 footage?

EOSHD at DPReview - final summary of 5D Mark III's video abilities
Alex Mand replied to Andrew Reid's topic in Cameras
Simco123, is nobody is going to be put off by a score of 82, it is one of their highest on record for any camera. The fact remains video was a disappointment. I think you need to redefine your expectations of what such a camera could have been. We waited nearly 4 years for an update to the 5D Mark II, yet there is hardly any difference in image quality and video feature set apart from at high ISOs. Sure moire is fixed, that is the minimum they could have done. It certainly doesn't match the D800 with a bit of sharpening in post.
I think that DPreview put the right score on MKIII. It's fair enough. Competition is tough nowadays. You have D800 which is also a great cam. I've been shooting a project with a MKIII as a B cam and it is a capable camera. It has an unique look however resolving power is a problem, but with sharpening in post you can avoid a little. It's up to the client but really I hardly see someone from audience to complain regarding image quality. We all know that things will shake badly with Blackmagic camera. It will have its own problems like the really smaller sensor but, as the MKII on its days, a lot of us will be using it because of its quality. People on a budget should buy a MKII and a mosaic filter. Put the new magic lantern and with a good card you can record on higher values than the normal ~50mbit. For me is a great deal. And now you can find MKII really cheap on the market. -
Blackmagic not just by name - why the Cinema Camera is the future

I wonder what Canon/Panasonic will do if this camera really takes off.
I really hope nothing bad happens to the production facilities / supplies chain / management / key investors of BMD in a couple of months. It's always cheaper to sabotage than to compete.
A fellow from cinema 5D just gave some more infos about this cam. He tested BMCC for hours there and got really impressed about what he saw there. Audio is totally clean, seems to have good pre amps and from what he saw there footage is comparable to the big guys like RED. Well, BMD is not a "new in town" company. They have one of the most powerful softwares for post in the market (color grading, tracking...) used in tons of full feature movies for years before Davinci was bought by BMD anyway. they have great products and I suspect, as many others, that someone big is supporting them. Perhaps apple? :P Ok but seriously this cam makes a great 3D rig for steadycam shots, rig shots. This is the first gen of this cam and we should all sincerely hope that it turns to be a great success. A S35 update for 4.5K would make it the roly grail of the low budget cams of all times. 13 stops, 12bit Raw, SSD recording, good sound straight from cam with headphone jack monitoring, good sized monitor, peaking, metadata customizable in camera, Da vinci resolve and ultra scopes. Well, we can't have everything but this sensor is Ok for most shots and with a good DOF, nothing massive as MKII but hey! That sensor is a vistavision sized sensor, even Alexa sensor is way smaller, like RED sensor... With that DR, aliasing and moire free images, great highlight rolloff and so much color data, you can grade it to the bones and yet have a pleasant image; Good luck trying that on 8bit 420 footage. Also this cam will be great for green screen! -
It is funny that last week... this place was going crazy about the FS700 and now Sony are back to being an evil company.... Somehow, Panasonic get thrown in too.... even though the gh2 is ridiculous, for the price (and it is not crippled.... they kept it at h264 standard, so it would work on all SD cards... consumer, you see). Hell, even canon just launched the world's smallest, lightest and cheapest 4K camera and the only 4K camera with a large than S35 sensor.... I love the blackmagic move....but the evil corporations stuff is just whinging, to me.
"Hell, even canon just launched the world's smallest, lightest and cheapest 4K camera and the only 4K camera with a large than S35 sensor...." It's amazing indeed but will cost a little.. Just 15k. Rent camera for most of us. And suddenly a cam capable of 12 bit RAW, 13 stops, proper audio, SDI HD inputs and everything else... For 3000. I don't know how they managed to put so many great features for this price range. I think for anything close to that you'd have to go for 35k C500... -
Blackmagic not just by name - why the Cinema Camera is the future
Alex Mand replied to Andrew Reid's topic in Cameras
Correct : we STILL love the 5d mark II...;)
I love mine that's for sure! :D And it will be a great pair with BM. Also I'm not a big fan of the stupid little DOF people insist on MKII/III. So critical that any move from the cast and you re done, must be always hacking focus... I'm often working on 5.6-8f to get a decent focus area... We can have a good shallow DOF with GH2 so I guess it will be the same on BMCC . I guess with a Tokina 11mm-16mm 2.8, a samyang 24mm 1.4, samyang 35mm 1.4 and a canon 50mm 1.8 for those on a tight budget and you're ready for basically everything... Besides old nikons F. Put a 70-200mm an you get an amazing telephoto camera... -
Blackmagic not just by name - why the Cinema Camera is the future
Alex Mand replied to Andrew Reid's topic in Cameras
This is the first generation of this little beauty. I sincerely hope that BMCC starts a new revolution and it probably will. Raw footage a this price range WITH a full copy of Davinci for $3000 ???? This is beyond awesome! Put a Tokina 11mm-16mm on this baby and bang! Go shooting professional ready footage and grade it on one of the best piece of software ever created for color grading (not to mention the awesome tracking it has). We just need to see some more footage but with all the hype right now I guess BM will treat the final adjustments with really care. NAB this year belongs to BM for us low budget shooters. Canon 1D C for $15K ??? Ok canon… Now imagine if the images from this baby come really sharp with all details we ever wanted from MKIII, nice highlight rolloff and also with no banding or moire? And it will probably happen.. then I think all complains will disappear as it never existed... lol After all we loved our beloved MKII even with all its problems. -
ummm... FS700 is getting really interesting now. 240fps, built ND and 4K ready for 8k? Ok, the price for the external recorder will probably cost another $3000 but yet not $15k of the 1D X... 4K. Really interested on th FS700 and waiting for something new from Pana... No good news for the independent filmmaker. Prices just boosted so much! Scary! ???

Shooting in London on the 5D Mark III with Iscorama 36 1.5x anamorphic
Alex Mand replied to Andrew Reid's topic in Cameras
Great images Andrew! Anamorphic really gives an extra sexy look. Have you sharpened it a bit? This year so far is being promissing in terms of new cameras coming. I think that fellows with MKII shoudn't rush to buy anything by now... Things will get hotter after NAB.... -
This is basically a Red Scarlet than you can really use, depend on and afford. Great Sony you are back!. Planning to buy it ASAP. AlsoDSLRs will have hard time with these kind of real cameras FS-100 and FS-700. Let's see the 4K EOS. Now they must release it with RAW output...
man... I've bought my FS100 used last week for 4k and with my "old" ninja we're making that cam fly! Abel cine has great presets for this cam, really flat ones. Although I'm not on the FF healm I really don't care that much. S35 is more that enough for a great shallow DOF. I've got a good kit of fast old canon and nikon primes and all I can say is that I've never regret it. Sold our MKIII and kept my MKII, used the extra money on new lenses and stuff. I think that FS100 will drop to 4k, really expecting that so I can buy a second cam. People trying to turn mkIII soft image into something with better res is a no no. Just compare Andrew's tests on MKIII and GH2... FS100 is a good choice for now and it shines with an external device.
-
Just WOW!!!! Now Sony is pushing things! For low budget movies this will be a must! If we think that by the end of the year we will have a 4K system option for low cost commercials and movies it is really amazing. And also the slow mo speeds and most probably a great low light performance. Waiting for the specs and the codec that will be used, lots of storage needed for 4k footage. Harsh competition this year. Good for us.
-
This is not for the faint-hearted... Really open a new MKIII and take off the OLPF is a good challenge, also u need to replace with some sort of UV filter or something... Rocket science for me but resolution increase seems massive! But need more details on moire and other stuffs. People are really trying to push foward MKIII res. Very good indeed.
What we need is 10-bit color.
We'll have to see what sony will bring on NAB. Just made a few tests of my FS100 and I'm amazed by its quality when attached to my ninja recorder. It's 8 bit but really is more than enough for me. Just bought it used for $4000 and sold my MKIII yesterday since I've got MKII and will order a mosaic filter. I'm going to spend the extra money on some new lenses and a fisheye for the FS100. Since I've got also a GH2 and the MKIII is fresh I did a great selling. I really don't miss the FF look and now I'm going to use MKII mostly for timelapses. And since it is done in RAW, don't need the MKIII. Hope to see a drop in FS100 prices after NAB and buy another unit for multi cam. It's good to be back to a proper camera, I really missed my old EX1. What a great cam. The only thing I really miss on FS100 is the built in ND but I've got filters so it's not a problem at all. Now the FS700... Sony is really bringing some competition! A lot actually! Great move!
yet again - anybody has any info on 1Dx video? samples did look very good, can there be some actual difference from mk3? good comparison, wide angle detail is so much better on GH2.
Well... If you count the price itself, 1DX is more expensive than a FS100 by a good margin. And Andrew, you could make a comparisson between a FS100 and a MKIII so people can see if there is a great plus on buying a sony cam over MKIII. Of course it has great functions like peaking but what about the same tests with those 2 cams??

CineStyle on the 5D Mark III and fixing softness in post
Alex Mand replied to Andrew Reid's topic in Cameras

With that said, for $3000 more, I would expect nothing less.
Yeah. Although I am trying to be positive, the situation is still poor. Trying to make a $3000 camera look as good as a $600 one. Oh dear!
I paid $3500 lol. We've used unsharpen mask on the footage today. Good results but nothing really shining. there ia a big difference between sharpening 700 lines and full 1000 lines... A pity. But well, is a work around good to know about cinestyle. I will upload also cinema preset and see what happens. -
The video quality of D800 definitely DESTROYS THE CANON 5D! I don't think it's like the FS100/GH2 but it comes very close
I don't think it destroys MKIII images. I'm in love with my MKIII! But for pictures. For video it is really mushy. On IPB mode it works very good but it's a problem to compare it to FS100 resolution wise. I've rented one for a project and I was just waiting to MKIII to make the choice... Now I got both... lol I sold my MKII and also bought an used FS100 for 4k. Just waiting to try it with my external recorder. also order my metabones adapter. I have a full set of canon primes and zooms. It would be really hard to buy a D800. And as previous Sony owner I trust a lot on their equipment and quality. I still miss my old EX1. Great cam.
To all those wondering why Andrew and LOTS of other people are using the FS100 "now" vs when it was first released - A LOT has changed with this little Sony monster of a camera. #1. Price drop #2. HDMI out supported by more external devices like the Hyperdeck 2 (now both uncompressed and AvidDNX) - Though the internal 28mps AVCHD is VERY good. #3. Some AMAZING new color log profiles by AbleCine and Frank Glencairn http://frankglencairn.wordpress.com/ #4. Tons of new E-mount adapters and a few new excellent E-mount lenses like the 24mm F1.8 Zeiss #5. Though not new, Focus Peaking is something that once you use it, you will curse every camera that doesn't have it. Plus all these new features to be added with a new firmware update any day now (if they haven't already). Click this link below for a complete list from Sony. Added the following Aspect-Ratio markers: 2.35:1 - How cool is that!!!? http://tiny.cc/2palbw Sony is being VERY aggressive with the FS100 as of late. I didn't care for the FS100 when it was first released either - but now is makes a LOT of sense. Sony NEX FS100 Profile Test
Very very good indeed! A little close to S-Log for our F3 here. With an external device (hyperdeck 2 is really an affordable option) this camera instantly turns into a great option for professional usage playing with big boys. We sold our MKII today and will keep MKIII as our stills camera, but got a good deal today for a FS100 used for $4000. Going to order my recorder. MKII was amazing 3 years ago but MKIII even correcting the minor problems of MKII is soft as hell. And with this problem with I-frames we will keep your system with F3 for major shots and GH2 hacked for B shots, some details etc. Sony could put a little more competition lowering even more FS100 price tag. this would make a big hit on canon MKIII for users intended for video. Interesting times...
-
lol My boss thought that this mosquito fizz was a problem with our MKIII, since it was shooting in such a high bitrate. Well... it's not. :( 700 lines for how long more? 4 years? 2016???? I don't think this will change on the upcoming T4i and 7D MKII. So DSLRs from canon are now going to a dead end. They stopped in time and gave the message: "MKII was an unexpected success, great, but let's put things in order now. We got a video division and a flagship cam C300 and if you want that premium, pay for it." C300 is really overpriced and they made the bare minimum updates for an incredible camera now with almost 4 years. They stopped the hype and without great competition things will settle down. I'm really dissapointed with this cam. You better buy the moire filter and use neat video when needed. I'm going to FS100 route also. In the company we've got the amazing F3 with S-log and an external recorder but it is always working! lol No time for personal projects. And WTF!! Focus assist button on the other side of the camera???? It's really hard to get used to it. >:(
