What was the reason for dumping the Blackmagic camera? That might help in deciding which one to get. If you get GH5 I'd highly recommend adding VLogL. It makes a world of difference.

Now that GH5 records 10 bit internal (no need for external recorders necessarily) I always have the SmallHD 502 with the Pan/Tilt hotshoe mount: http://store.smallhd.com/store/500-700-pan-tilt-mount It's super lightweight and swivels in any direction without having to tighten anything.

I can't believe Atomos hasn't updated the Star with 4k.

Bummer. I think its a matter of how many stores are in a certain distance radius. I always buy gear from a local store in Aurora and they're always busy. They're the only full photo/video store within a 15 mile radius though, if you don't count Best Buy.

I wiill ask him for sure. A new Alexa would depreciate but its far cheaper than renting. Also after 2 yrs there would still be a competitive market for used 2017 Alexas.

I have a friend that just picked up an Alexa classic package on eBay for $12k. I would agree with you though that getting a new Alexa and selling within 2 years would retain value better. If you have the capital.

For those who love Canon colors I'd highly recommend using @hyalinejim V Log to ML Color LUT.

I think you mentioned this earlier @Oliver Daniel but if you like going handheld the IBIS in the GH5 is so great paired with fast primes and lenses like your Sigma Arts.

Here is a quick test on the GH5. VLogL C4K 10 bit. Sigma 18-35 Cine (@28mm). You'll see a nice quality with human faces, but all I had right now were flowers.

If you get a GH5 I'd highly recommend getting a Tiffen Digital Diffusion 2 filter if you want a slightly softer look. It doesn't haze out the highlights or anything like that, but ever so-slightly softens the edges while keeping resolution.

I made that Fargo LUT based on an interview that I heard with the DP Dana Gonzalez. He said that they stripped out the blue channel. If you notice the sky or anything that is blue - it's virtually monochromatic. He said they were basing the look off of Inside Llewyn Davis.
