  1. Thanks. I don't think the lens has anything to do with it b/c I've tested some grey/beige walls with the 12-35 and the macroblocking is there, but I think the shots in Chicago were high contrast which hides it pretty well. I've done some more testing today and have found that the Varicam LUT is just the worst in regards to hiding the magenta/cyan blocking. Something about that curve is just not right with the GH4's V Log. Film Convert seems to hide it pretty well. Exposing to the right by a stop or so also helps. Thank God faces aren't lumped into the cyan/magenta problem. They seem to be fine. I would just avoid big walls of light beige/grey, or yellow. Pure white and dark grey are fine.
  2. The noise really isn't bad in the shadows, it's bad in the midtones. That's where all of the ugly cyan/magenta blocking happens. Against creme colored or grey surfaces.
  3. How are they creating better color accuracy by taking away color values. That seems strange. I'm not discounting the article, just saying it's true that it's an odd approach.
  4. Seems like 10 bit VLog is alot noisier than 8 bit Cine D.

  6. Good article. I've shot a few more things in the last day or two and realize that scenes with alot of light and minimal shadows really shine. Scenes with alot of dark shadows and bright lights work best when the shadows are brought down to near crushing. Alot of midtones with few shadows and highlights in a scene are the worst.

  9. A user at Personal View pointed out that the Cineon Converter in Premiere is only 8 bit, instead of 32 bit. That is what causes the banding in the sky. The same shot with a 32 bit LUT applied gets rid of the banding.

  13. Awesome. Did you notice any banding with 10 bit? In 8 bit I really only noticed it in the sky, and with HD 96fps.
  14. I don't think it's necessary if you get used to LOG and how to judge exposure. Using zebras, and the exposure meter on the screen helps get a good starting point.
  15. In Premiere/AE it's actually an effect converter instead of a 3D LUT. I know that Impulz makes a Cineon LUT if I'm not mistaken.

  17. Yes I thought the same thing about being similar to Blackmagic. To my eyes the DR seems the same as the BMPCC, and BMCC. I'm dying to test it via ProRes HQ but I don't have an external recorder. I might have to rent one this week.

  19. VLog L converted with Cineon LOG to Linear LUT. A mixture of 4K 24p and HD 96fps. Things I'm loving about VLogL: Dynamic Range, and Color Things that aren't so great: Banding, and noise. I'm hoping that using an external recorder at 10 bit 4:2:2 will help with the latter.
  20. 10 bit 4:2:2 in camera would be game over. I couldn't see using any other camera for a long time.
  21. It depends on which LUT I'm using to de log the image. When I use Varicam LUT it's pretty much spot on. Cineon converter is a little dark. I'm not sure if it's better to overexpose or just raise it in post. Oh, and Filmconvert seems to be kinda dark too.
  22. Haha thanks. No tripod. Only used Panasonic 12-35. Fader ND. You are right, contrasty images are looking the best to me. Low con looks have some noise, but I'm testing out Neat Video to reduce it a bit.
  23. I think alot of people are right here in saying that you have to pretty much nail the exposure or it could be a disaster. I try getting the exposure meter right at 0 on the GH4, and then figure out my focal point, and adjust as needed.
