The Effect Of Owning A Very Expensive Camera (for business)
AaronChicago replied to Oliver Daniel's topic in Cameras
Here's another question to ponder. If you were a DP and promoted your services saying "I own an Epic, or Alexa" , or "I own an A7s", or "I own a Blackmagic Pocket Cinema Camera" - what type of clients/work would you be attaining? This is assuming your excellent at your job. I'm talking strictly as a DP. Not a full production company. -

There are different budget levels for sure. If a band has $500 for a video they'd be more than thrilled to have it shot on a T2i or GH4 etc, and they'd probably love it. -

Yeah what you should do is rent an Epic and shoot something side by side with the URSA Mini. Keep it ready to show clients who are REALLY wanting RED. -

Their label might. I've worked with a band now on 5 videos for LEGO. The first one, LEGO requested a RED ONE MX to be used, back in 2012. Last year I asked if we could use GH4's and Blackmagic Pocket cameras to keep the profile lower and to use gimbals etc. They agreed and it helped free up money for other areas like costumes. When I look back I can totally see a better looking image with the RED but no one even notices, especially the kids who watch those videos. Hell, LEGO didn't even comment on the image quality of the GH4's/BMPCCs. If I had to guess I'd say clients can sometimes be nervous about how everything is going to look and some of them know the name RED. They'll mention it as an option to help free up some uncertainty. It can be a pain in the ass but it's just how it goes I'm afraid. So, as a business decision, I personally wouldn't buy a camera that expensive. I would just rent. -

Alot of hypotheticals going on. Let's hear some real world examples. -

From my friend Jesse: "High end clients appreciate the RED but "first time" video client don't know the gear at all and don't know the difference. But when you show up with it on set and it's all built out they feel really important. the camera doesn't really close the deal on the front end for "budget" clients. All that being said: I love mine and am glad I bought it." -

I have a friend who runs a small production company with a RED Scarlet. I just emailed him to ask his opinion. -
Someone needs to make a RED shell that houses other cameras. Most clients wouldnt know the difference but would be STOKED.
-
Have you thought about a Scarlet Dragon?
-
How do you feel about the 1" sensor? I feel like if it were Super 35 the slow lens wouldn't matter much.

I have a couple of Scorpion lights in the mail. Can't wait to try them out.

Shootout of the 4K flagships - Canon 1D C versus Samsung NX1
AaronChicago replied to Andrew Reid's topic in Cameras
The 1DC renders better color than the C300 mark I. Check out this side by side and notice the 1DC displaying warm and cool, while the C300 is mostly warm: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=o6s5VDABzj0 -
i've been looking around to find one as a companion to my C100. $4,000 would be the price I'd pay for it used.
-
where do you see it for $4,000?
-
I've never used either but i love the 1DC's image.

While it's hard to know an exact number, since we don't all have access to popular cinematographers gear list, I would say that "almost" everytime I watch a Q&A with a famous or semi-famous DP they talk about their personal collection and Canon is always mentioned. I think it's just brand awareness in the industry. I'd bet most DPs don't sit around and research the latest prosumer options.

Color shift isn't THAT bad. At least on mine. Here's with the Variable ND at the max. Below that is with no ND. (sorry for the shitty framing, just grabbed the GH4 for a quick test.)
-
I never thought I'd see FULL HD printed anywhere in 2015.
-
Look into a variable ND. It's adds a slight polarizing effect, but it's super convenient. http://www.bhphotovideo.com/bnh/controller/home?O=&sku=857429&gclid=CLqYvJD46cYCFRCCaQodQF8Nqg&Q=&m=Y&is=REG&A=details Use a stepping ring to work with 72mm thread: http://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/98938-REG/General_Brand_77_72_77mm_72mm_Step_Down_Ring_Lens.html

Damn. I wonder what a 14mm lens would look like on that camera.
-
What focal length lens do you think he used for those wide shots?
