I read this less than a week back on another site too (cannot recall which one). Apparently DJI is releasing an action camera which may be great news. The action cam market has almost become boring with smartphones doing way better than most action camera, with 960fps, super low light photo and video, water resistance, great dynamic range and many other other tricks. Hopefully DJI has some great tricks up its sleeve, and one may be tempted to carry an action camera, that offers just that extra bit, instead of a smartphone. We should know by the 15th of this Month. https://www.dji.com/mobile/trailer?clickaid=Ngzgwxs8wc6N-NYf85DguFiaPE4ntMBS&clickpid=722074&clicksid=245506a9b55c7da03df676cd72bb0f2f&from=dap_unique&pm=custom&site=brandsite

These seem to be more on point. I guess all categories will have to be specifically measured. https://nikonrumors.com/2019/01/15/the-2019-bcn-rankings-are-out.aspx/amp/ Though I have to agree about the A7iii being quite the bang for the buck.

I could be wrong but the cameras were too noisy for the night shots. Either they were conservative with lighting or poor choice of lenses or something else.

Let's list out the Shortcomings of the EOS R 1. No 4k 60p and no DCI 4k. 2. 1080p only at 23.98/24/29.97/59.94fps. 3. No 120fps 1080p. It still has 720p for high speed video (in 2019???). 4. MP4 video format instead of MOV 5. Internal codec limited to 4:2:0 8-bit internal recording despite that monstrous 480mbps codec MP4. 6. Huge 1.7x crop factor with 4K (some even claim an imaginary 1.8x crop). Meaning low light would be an issue and the quality of sharpness may be debatable 7. Recording time limited to 29:59 for continuous video recording. 8. No IBIS and many of it's new lenses don't have OIS meaning shake would be like a bad amateur after effects job. 9. There was banding in photos, but it seems to have been improved substantially. 9. One of the lowest rated full frame Mirrorless sensors (especially for dynamic range). 10. Class leading rolling shutter (?) 11. PDAF not as effective in 4k as it is in 1080p (only a few people seem to have noticed this, apparently). 12. Not the most impressive battery life. Ok, I got bored writing this. There are a few more points. Maybe you could fill them out when you read this. Hehehe.

The A7iii was such a good value proposition at launch, that if it offered 10-bit 4-2-0 internally at launch, it would have completely destroyed almost all other cameras in its segment. I still think that while the S1 has superb video features (usable IBIS while walking, that insane promised VLog, superb low light capabilities etc), because the VLog will cost other $99-199 more, the gap between the S1 and others in its category will increase substantially (I am guessing it may go up to $700). Considering the lack of PDAF, the much larger and heavier body (like 1.4 times the weight and 1.70 times the volume of the A7iii), lesser battery life (especially in comparison with the A7iii), Panasonic should be careful with the pricing of the VLog. Or they should have charged $2200 for the S1 at launch (wonder if it would have been possible with the class leading EVF, the best IBIS, one of the best weather sealing, and other class leading hardware) and charged another $300 for the VLog (since it may require a lot more work and be too advanced for most users) I feel the price difference between $1999 and $2499 is huge, especially if one plans to pick up more than a single camera. The S1 prices will also go down, the only question is when. The Eos R on the other hand, is at the bottom of its category, and should, therefore have been priced accordingly. PS: These guys believe that a price cut is in the offing wrt to All Mirrors Cameras, including the S1. I am personally hoping the S1 hits $1999 and stays there. https://photorumors.com/2019/04/26/the-full-frame-mirrorless-price-war-has-started/

Thanks for clearing this out ?

I also thought it didn't have PDAF in 4k (it was limited to 1080p).

HUGE RESPECT. I have shot a short film All alone because the DoP and his assistant turned into nymphomaniacs somewhere during the shoot, and just couldn't shoot. I loved the whole experience, even if I wasn't happy with how the short finally turned out. I feel, that one should re-write (touch up and polish), one's first work, after the first 10 projects, so that it looks and feels like it should. Congrats ?

8k will have to wait. There are hardly any TVs with 8k. Plus editing will be a nightmare, 4-2-2 1010-bit will take time etc etc. A 20MP that merges the talents of the GH5 and GH5s would be perfect. And the VLog needs needs atleast 1 full stop more of dynamic range.
-
Just VLog (No L Rubbish) with almost 13 stops, even better colour science, usable lowlight upto ISO12800, slightly larger screen (just 1/2-2/3 inch larger) and better photography capabilities (14Bit RAW?). The GH5 does almost everything else pretty well. And release that f1.7 zoom, at Sigma Prices, since neither Panasonic nor Leica are probably designing nor making it.
-
Highlights seem to be blown out in every shot. Panasonic should pay this guy to Prevent this video from being seen by anyone.

Hahaha. You jokes remind me of David Thorpe. What I found surprisingly was the curious reason given by Sigma. It seemed to make absolutely no sense. I will read that thread. Sigma is Panasonic's secret lens designer and manufacturer. And I am guessing, that, therefore all Leica branded Panasonic lenses have Sigma collaborating with Leica, by default. The Quattro cameras weren't really doing too well. They probably lose money on that lineup, whereas their lenses seem to sell pretty well. So they may concentrate on the lens lineup, since thay would bring in the money. Hahaha. Sigma may just increase the price of the EF/SA to-L mount converter and share a % with Leica. Hahaha. Or disable or weaken the autpgovus performance substantially. IF it releases with a converter at all, this year. Ah, all well that ends well. Hopefully. And a few agreements, whether oral or written. And more than anything else, users are dying to get the unrestricted VLog which pushes this camera head and shoulder above the competition for video.

Whoa !!! You've actually made some superb observations. If it was supposed to work initially, and suddenly not work anymore, Without giving any Actual Reasons behind this ("... However, specification changed and and it will not be compatible with Leila's existing L-mount cameras."), it seems to be, IMHO, a Permanent Problem. I didn't even notice the magnitude of the Problem. Leica has been milking some strange mount camera system, where they engage Panasonic to make cameras for them with a very niche market. The cameras and bodies are both ludicrously priced (like most things made by Leica). And suddenly Panasonic believes it would be easier (and better?) to adopt this mount and move to Full Frame from here, instead of creating a Full Frame mount from scratch, thereby addressing issues with the l-mount, to be begin with. The problem is Leica won't let them make zoon lenses that are less expensive (one of the hallmarks of M43 and Panasonic ILCs), unless they are like f4 or slower. And they won't allow them or Sigma or whoever else, to make any nature of adaptor, to ensure that similar zooms are Never Compatible with the L-Mount (Leica or Panasonic or even probably a Sigma Camera, if it were to ever be made with that mount). Does it mean users will be forced to use Prime Lenses where one needs brighter lenses if one cannot afford the Leica's unaffordable pricing. I personally find the f2.8-4 lens to be a bad mix of not being bright enough, and yet Also lacking a Constant f-stop (and also terribly priced, as in the case of Leica). In that sense, atleast the Samsung 16-50mm f2-2.8 seemed like a much better variable aperture lens. It was very bright at one end atleast. Does it also mean that users should not expect Panasonic or Sigma, to ever make f2.8 zoom lenses for the l-mount (or till such time as all leftover Leica Stock of Zooms have been sold and a cooling has been allowed)? Leica hasn't been making many/any f2.8 zooms, and the f2.8-4 zooms don't seem to be intended for the S1 and S1R target audience, atleast due to the pricing (and also due bad autofocus in video, according to some user reviews). Interesting for a Lens System that has 42 Lens Roadmap by the end of 2020.
-
Aah, very interesting. Though that, unfortunately, limits the zoom options (because of the bad pricing).
-
Once all the various L-Mount Sigma lenses are released the S1 (and S1 R) will become superb Photography and Videography tools. Their prices seem a lot more accessible (and interestingly, all are primes?).

Sony Semicon develops 100MP FF sensor with 6K video
sanveer replied to androidlad's topic in Cameras
Absolutely. A staggering 15.5 stops of dynamic range, excellent low light capabilities, 100MP, multiple options for downressing with various combinations of sub-sampling (never even imagined before), way lesser (predicted) rolling shutter, excellent high speed shooting options, 16-bit options for photo and video, ... the list is almost endless. If Sony makes a camera that is as capable as this sensor, it would be terribly unfair to everyone else. And if they could have one version with a nice compact body, without costing a kidney, I would love to buy one of those. As would (hundreds of) thousands of others. -
Hahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahaha. It IS 2 generations behind Sony (or 4). Maybe Canon should just put aside their ego, and just pick up Sony sensors. The difference 12 and 15.5 Stops is HUGE. Plus that 16-bit advantage would help push shadows and highlights like nothing else around. Plus this sensor would easily outperform most (or all current) Medium Format sensors (atleast in that 60MP resolution equivalent chart).
-
Not really earth shattering Dynamic Range for a Full Frame Sensor, especially considering that the ISO performance is also rather mediocre. Is this sensor like 2 generations behind Sony?
-
Wouldn't it require (a lot) more processing power too, for better noise reduction. And what about dynamic range? From the few videos posted online, the video profile seemed very contrasty. It also seemed to be the exact opposite of a log profile, and had a very low bitrate too, and therefore was not a good example for highlighting the capabilities of the sensor. Maybe once they figure these things out, we'll tually get to see the capabilities of the sensor (and processing).

NAB 2019 predictions and major talking points - BMPCC 4K Pro anyone?!
sanveer replied to Andrew Reid's topic in Cameras
Sigma is probably working overtime to make it. Most likely Panasonic promised some imaginary lens, and then ran to Sigma to make good on its association. It's possible that the final lens will have different design elements. -
The autofocus will be decent, not great. Someone on some forum shared a screenshot (from Imaging Resource or Dpreview.com?) between the S1 and the Canon, and the S1 didn't seem to that that strange noise that PDAF (and imperfect processing to cover the focus pixels) seemed to exhibit. I would like to see a face off between Panasonic and the other Mirrorless Full Frame camera on: 1. Maximim usable ISO in photo and video. 2. Quality of photos zoomed in 200-400% 3. Dynamic range comparison (in both Photo and Video) 4. How the video holds up in post (with and without VLog, when it comes out in June?). 5. Weather and dust resistance. 6. Photo and video stabilization, and many stops of stabilisation in photos and how stable for video the stabilisation actually is (the Sonys seem pretty bad for walking). 7. Maybe a colour and quality comparison between the various JPEG (and RAW) photos. 8. Size and handling comparison. 9. Comparison of lens lineup including quality and prices for comparable lenses.
-
Actually the S1 has superb noise reduction algorithms, and probably great sensor design (and calibration). They should probably have added very light grain, to the short film and made it more Filmic. I wonder how much they will change for the VLog, and what what the bitrate increase will be post VLog. The S1 already costs more and weights more than other Mirrorless full frame cameras in its class.

NAB 2019 predictions and major talking points - BMPCC 4K Pro anyone?!
sanveer replied to Andrew Reid's topic in Cameras
I don't know about NAB, but Blackmagic and Olympus could do with a Good Collaboration. Olympus could get superb video features abs great codec, and Blackmagic could finally have weather-proofing and IBIS. The next iteration of the Blackmagic Pocket should be 30% Smaller, with IBIS, fully articulating Smaller Screen (3.5inches), and weather sealing. The battery life will increase atleast 50% if not 100% automatically, when using a smaller screen. -
Not really a video powerhouse with the 8-bit 4-2-0. They could have increased the price slightly and atleast added 10-bit 4-2-0 internal. I noticed that it was named G99 in Japan, and suddenly realised we could be looking at a lower range camera, with much lower video specs. It seems a little disappointing.
