[/quote] I agree. The 5D Mark ii was introduced in September 2008. 4 years later, and the video quality, in DSLRs, is exactly the same, albeit some minor, cosmetic changes. Also, the XLR Adapter for US$800 is INSANE. Sony seems to be going the Canon way, producing DSLRs with lousy video quality, at exorbitant prices. Maybe, they should just scrap the video, Altogether, instead of consistently trying to fool consumers. Also, the Canon 5D Mark iii and the Sony A99 are double the price of the Panasonic GH3 (or more). If video is a necessary governing (factor for) price point, then, they should offer a $1000 discount, without any fuss, on both the Sony AND the Canon.

Try the SLR Magic HyperPrime Cine 12mm T/1.6 Lens for Micro Four Thirds. Andrew (Reid) has shot some gr8 footage with it, which you could check out. The Olympus M. Zuiko Digital ED 12mm f/2.0 is also a gr8 lens (though more expensive).

There is a certainly kind of earnest curiosity, in your questions. I guess, a lot of people on this forum (including me, sometimes), believe that they are too elementary, at times, but, please don't let it bother you. I have worked in a few features, and we had a DoP/ Cinematographer, with about 30 years of experience (or more), who, more than once, missed shadows, and bills on trees, in the frame. Though, he was broad-shouldered enough to admit his folly, the moral of the story is, no one is perfect :) The length of the time left, on the card, depending on the MB rate, you are shooting at.

[/quote] If you already have the 20mm f1.7, get a fast 50mm Nikon or Canon (from ebay), with an adaptor. It will be cheap and the optics are quite good.

Wow, I am so glad, that people are using the GH2 for some great documentary work. Also, quite creative. Your documentary, though, seems a little heavy, on the eyes. Partially due to the focus (you haven't focused properly, and on the right object, in the right sequence of shots), and, maybe, partially, due to the fact, that your camera is, possibly handheld, and, in some curious ways, it shows. Maybe you needed to stabilize the shots. I guess, you could still do it, in post.

ALL HACKS (with NO exception), disable a few of the features of the GH2, and most of them, cause the video to hang, under certain conditions. While some hacks only support the 30 MBps cards, other support the 45 MBps cards, and still other ONLY support 95 MBps cards. Its a conspiracy of the Hackers and the Card Manufacturers. :D

I guess, this may be one of the reasons for the Cheaper 35mm T1.4 SLR Magic Lens ... :)

I am guessing, that your camera is NOT hacked. So, there is some issue with either your card, or something else. Please take it to the guy you got your card from, and let him tell you, what the issue may be.

iDynamic is apparently, a bad idea, for shooting video. I read, at quite a few places, that, the iDynamic function, makes the video create more noise (more grainy, in darker spots). Though, there have been very few actual videos, documenting this. This is one video, which does document it (though, from the looks of things, this could very easily have been cause, by the ISO Bug, or even due to the high contrast, at lower ISO, a little like the noise, in the video, in which Andrew testes the new SLR Magic lenses). I dunno. I don't use it, because I did earlier, and, I did not notice any difference. Also, one of the hacks (don't remember which one), said that the iDynamic has to be turned off, when the hack is installed. The Panasonic 20mm f1.7 is a fixed focal length lens, meaning, that you cannot zoom in. The advantage that it offers, over a zoom, is that, you can get prime lenses, which are very fast (meaning, that they are very bright). This is great for indoor, or night shooting. The whole problem with the Canon DSLRs was that they could resolve only about half the lines, of the GH2, and therefore,they were not packing in enough details. I don't believe the Nikons will be any better, whether they say 4-2-0 or 4-2-2 chroma sub-sampling. Whether you get the Ninja or any other HDMI recorder, I don't believe it will make much of a difference. Not to mention all the aliasing and moire.

I think, with all that nonsense going on in China, the Panasonic GH3, and a lot of other Japanese product launches, may be delayed. So, maybe the GH3 may start officially shipping in December of January. It may be a blessing in disguise, if, they can tweak the firmware :P

The downscaling (for video) isn't really an issue in the GH2. The whole moire and aliasing happens, probably due to some codec issues, where they try and resolve the chromatic aberration (I'm guessing). That is why, it happens with the Panny lenses

In the Full-Sized pic, I do not notice any moire. If you downsize, any pics, you're almost guaranteed, to notice moire. Please watch it at Full Resolution (Full Size). Maybe, I didn't notice.

[/quote] Some of the videos doing the round, have the 14-140 lens, which is really not the lens for low light (the darker corners of the Photokina Panasonic Hall), if that is one of the videos you are referring to. Also, like I mentioned before (and so did someone else), the Panny lenses produce some crazy moire and aliasing. From what I've seen, I am a little disappointed with the video quality, on the GH3, as well. But, maybe, we should wait, till people get their hands on the GH3, and use non-panny lenses, along with faster lenses, in low light conditions.

One complaint I've always had about the GH2, was the mediocre still photo quality. I saw this on Imaging Resource, and I feel, that the GH3 may have noticeably better photo quality. Why would you wanna soft focus it?

Pushing your ISO higher, for high speed videos, isn't exactly a great idea. I agree with Zach. You, probably, need a faster lens.
