The whole problem with the Canon DSLRs was that they could resolve only about half the lines, of the GH2, and therefore, they were not packing in enough details. I don't believe the Nikons will be any better, whether they say 4-2-0 or 4-2-2 chroma sub-sampling. Whether you get the Ninja or any other HDMI recorder, I don't believe it will make much of a difference. Not to mention all the aliasing and moire.

Test footage from the pre-release Panasonic GH3 at Photokina

I think, with all that nonsense going on in China, the Panasonic GH3, and a lot of other Japanese product launches, may be delayed. So, maybe the GH3 may start officially shipping in December of January. It may be a blessing in disguise, if, they can tweak the firmware :P -

The downscaling (for video) isn't really an issue in the GH2. The whole moire and aliasing happens, probably due to some codec issues, where they try and resolve the chromatic aberration (I'm guessing). That is why, it happens with the Panny lenses -

In the Full-Sized pic, I do not notice any moire. If you downsize, any pics, you're almost guaranteed, to notice moire. Please watch it at Full Resolution (Full Size). Maybe, I didn't notice. -
please do share with me the footage you have seen that demonstrate higher dynamic range than on the gh2. all I have personally seen are blown highlights and crushed blacks. supposedly better codec but now has aliasing and moire so worse end image quality. some of you guys say firmware might fix this...ok let's find out in due time I guess really? The only low light shots I've seen where the ones on reverie. And I don't know if you have downloaded the 1080p version but it shows heavy dirty color noise. The french guys vid is just bad looking and has no download option anyways so can't judge from the video compression. All of the post I've seen from people being happy about the upgrade are only parroting the specs sheet. Yes the specs sheets on paper are nice but I have personally not yet seen them translate to quality footage. That is all that matter. Remember a camera that has poor spec sheets but has great image quality? Yeah the gh2.
Some of the videos doing the round, have the 14-140 lens, which is really not the lens for low light (the darker corners of the Photokina Panasonic Hall), if that is one of the videos you are referring to. Also, like I mentioned before (and so did someone else), the Panny lenses produce some crazy moire and aliasing. From what I've seen, I am a little disappointed with the video quality, on the GH3, as well. But, maybe, we should wait, till people get their hands on the GH3, and use non-panny lenses, along with faster lenses, in low light conditions. -

One complaint I've always had about the GH2, was the mediocre still photo quality. I saw this on Imaging Resource, and I feel, that the GH3 may have noticeably better photo quality. Some of the pics are seriously amazing. i wish Panasonic would incorporate the GPS, as an option, in one of their grips. Leica is gr8. But, like all Leicas, seriously prohibitive pricing. -
Hi fellow filmmakers, I'd like to get slow-motion images of the brushes falling vertically before the lens, spinning and bouncing on the ground in full shot and medium closeup (sort of this in video slow-motion : http://vimeo.com/10109873). In order to get a sharp enough focus, I have to set the shutter speed high, but I loose light and must therefore increase the iso. The result as you've already guessed is too much noise. I'm using a 7d at 60 fps and two kino lights in a studio, and then I slow the images down using twixtor in final cut. - What settings would you use in order to do this shot ? The brushes don't have to be perfectly in focus I guess, but the image should be clean enough. - Do I really have to increase the shutter speed or should I stay around 1/60 ? Could I go lower ? I look forward to reading your suggestions, Thanks ! Ernest
You didn't mention the ISO you're shooting at. Or the shutter speed. Also, Canon DSLR videos are already so soft. Why would you wanna soft focus it?

Pushing your ISO higher, for high speed videos, isn't exactly a great idea. I agree with Zach. You, probably, need a faster lens.

I am guessing, that either coloured lighting, or (white) light through a bottle, or something, reflects, on the juggler's face. Because, when he stands away, from the bar, his face isn't yellow (in the shots where he is playing with that string). Also, it seems strange, that though his face (and hair) seem very yellow, in a few frames, his shirt is almost as white, as ever ... :P -
hahaha ... i Actually agree, with you. Actually, I feel, that there is so much technology is outsourced, nowadays, that ANY company, with the right amount of money, can get the work done. Engineers and designers can always be picked up, and the right salary (and lateral), will, almost, always cause corporate migrations. Therefore, emerging economies, or corporate behemoths, always have an advantage. Namely, deep pockets. Anyways, I hope Leica can pull off a coup, and manage Better Video (even if its gr8 2k video). They should plan for the Long term. ;)
-
ok, that was rude. I apologise. :(

Its a very curious request. Considering, that Leica have just created their first Full HD rangefinder model (please correct me, if I am wrong). I dunno,if they would begin by starting 4k resolution, for film, immediately. Is that even possible? Have you been reading too much of the Vitaly's Personal Views? Go watch My Fair Lady, or Sound of Music, or some other children's classic. And, stop reading too much into this whole 2k and 4k shit. It not good for you. :P
Here's a thought: If a thousand people emailed Leica and requested their new M camera to have a 4K video option, then perhaps Leica would do this? Leica has the video component now. If Canon can disable their 1DX from being a 4K video camera, perhaps Leica can provide the 4K sought after within their camera? Imagine what would happen to Leica sales! One thing to keep in mind, we don't know how good the video truly is in their M camera. The 1DX costs $7000, the same as the new Leica. Could get interesting. Stay tune.
I am curious to know where you got the info about the Leica having 4k resolution option. Could you post the link. thanks :-)
It's common sense. There is NO LOGICAL reason why multi-aspect ratio would have negative impact on the image quality. Second, if it was Panasonic own sensor, the answer to the question: "So it's no a Sony sensor" would not have been "No comment". If it was Panasonic sensor, they would been taking full credit for the sensor. "No comment" is not the answer you give when you have invested millions/billions of dollars developing a sensor. It's obviously not a Panasonic sensor. That's why it's not multi-aspect sensor ...
I like the Confidence with which people say "Common Sense", nowadays. I am assuming, that apart from the Increase in Costs, of Manufacturing a Multi-aspect Ratio Sensor, the costs for wiring the same, would be noticeably higher, too. That may be, a few, among the many other reasons, that Panasonic chose to go with a Sony sensor. Credit for the sensor. Dude, companies outsource so many different components, that, if they were to outline each, it would appear, that they produce nothing. Apple, the world's largest company, doesn't make its own sensors, on its smart phones. They don't make most of the components. They mere design it, and then have it produced in China, outsourcing most of everything else. The ARM processor, is probably being designed in-house (partially), for the first time. There is no shame in outsourcing.

Exclusive - Canon confirm 1D C 4K DSLR is same hardware as the 1D X
sanveer replied to Andrew Reid's topic in Cameras
I guess, its a strange take, on business sense, as well. Whereas, specialised cameras like the Canon 1DC would earn Canon about $6000, per camera (its JUST a random guess :P ), Cameras like the GH3 would get Panasonic about $300 (another random guess). The price difference is great, for huge profits, but, only in the short term. Because, if the GH3 were to sell in hundreds of thousands, and the 1DC were to only sell a few thousands, then, Panasonic, and all other manufacturers of cameras should consider, providing consumers, with similar technology. I am assuming Advertisement budgets would be similar. For one, you pay huge amounts to top Directors and DoPs, and have a niche target audience, mostly penetrated, by word of mouth, For the other, you hire much cheaper actors (nut create expensive Advertisements), and a Huge Marketing Campaign. So, they're kindda drawn. Though, the mass consumption (read GH3), campaign, due to its reach, may be a little more expensive. Also, much better video and much higher resolution, would also, unfortunately, need an Edit Setup (and Grading and Colouring), to match the kindda stuff, that comes out from one of these cameras. Most Laptops and Desktops would not be able to take the workload of a 4k resolution camera. As, a matter of fact, I feel, that if the GH3 were pushed to 210Mbps+ (or whatever the Perfect tranfer rate would be, without burning the processor), and allowed to push itself, as far as dynamic range, true colour and completely flat picture profile were concerned, most modern Indie Film Edit Set-ups, may not be able to handle it. So, its a very strange problem. I hope, that, I am wrong. Though, I still do not believe, that, the price difference is justified. -
I think his answer was not honest. The multi-aspect sensor has no penalty on image quality, either in stills or in video! If anything, it improves the image quality as the various in camera aspect ratios can use the best part from the sensor. It's pretty obvious why GH3 does not have multi-aspect sensor. They are using the stock Sony sensor that is also used by Olympus.
Also, do you have documented proof, saying, that the multi-aspect ratio, is, in no way, detrimental, to image quality?

Everyone seems to believe, that, they share the same sensor. They don't. It has a sensor, which doesn't have a multi-aspect ratio. I too, wish, it did. But, I guess, getting cleaner, more detailed images, for stills, was more important, than any multi-aspect ratio. Cost may have been an issue. Also, Sony may not have had anything, on those lines, for Panny.

I realized, that, all the Cameras (the GH3s, i.e.), at the Photokina, are all suffering from some serious software issues. Some have wi-fis, which were not in order, and others had other issues. It seems to be in the pre-alpha stage, which is, a good thing. Maybe, they can Tweak a lot of things, and get things in order, before, they finally hit the shelves. This could include focus peaking, and that strange aliasing on Panny lenses (probably created, to in order to kill the chromatic aberration, but, misfires, somehow).
-
Does it matter that the Panasonic GH3 has a Sony Sensor. Anyways, maybe Sony offered a great deal to Panasonic, and since the GH2 produced insane video, but, average stills, it was a good idea, to go with a better sensor. Whats the Big Deal???? I am guessing, that, due to the China mayhem, the delivery of the GH3 may be substantially delayed. Maybe, its High Time, the world moved out of China, And, worked upon Quality Control, now that, they are at it. :D
It's possible that aliasing may actually be related to a bug in the electronic lens correction used to adjust for distortion in lumix lenses.
I feel the same. I think, its got to do with the chromatic aberration correction (the 'lens on' feature), and maybe, even the OIS. Will do a series of tests, and, then, perhaps, figure this out.
I havent made a study about it, but usually I've found aliasing (even if very little) in the GH2 when using electronic Panny lenses, but never when using analog lenses. That's maybe why there was aliasing in the market shots (made using the 12-25mm f2.8) from the first video but there's none in that sinlgle shot of the Louvre pyramid (I know the camera doesn't move, but you'd still see it). Still, if you take a look at the 1080p version of the first video, in the cat playing shots, there's a lot of detail.
I noticed this, in the Panny lenses, too. Thee is some noticeable aliasing and monuments having straight lines are not handled properly. I wanted to see, whether it makes any difference with the 'lenses off (/on)' feature.
Keep it, I will be keeping mine, perhaps buying another too.
Dude !!! I was thinking of getting another GH2, as well. Especially, since its prices have been slowing declining. And, it is So amazing.
