Test footage from the pre-release Panasonic GH3 at Photokina
sanveer replied to Andrew Reid's topic in Cameras
I am guessing, that either coloured lighting, or (white) light through a bottle, or something, reflects, on the juggler's face. Because, when he stands away, from the bar, his face isn't yellow (in the shots where he is playing with that string). Also, it seems strange, that though his face (and hair) seem very yellow, in a few frames, his shirt is almost as white, as ever ... :P -
hahaha ... i Actually agree, with you. Actually, I feel, that there is so much technology is outsourced, nowadays, that ANY company, with the right amount of money, can get the work done. Engineers and designers can always be picked up, and the right salary (and lateral), will, almost, always cause corporate migrations. Therefore, emerging economies, or corporate behemoths, always have an advantage. Namely, deep pockets. Anyways, I hope Leica can pull off a coup, and manage Better Video (even if its gr8 2k video). They should plan for the Long term. ;)

ok, that was rude. I apologise. :(

Its a very curious request. Considering, that Leica have just created their first Full HD rangefinder model (please correct me, if I am wrong). I dunno,if they would begin by starting 4k resolution, for film, immediately. Is that even possible? Have you been reading too much of the Vitaly's Personal Views? Go watch My Fair Lady, or Sound of Music, or some other children's classic. And, stop reading too much into this whole 2k and 4k shit. It not good for you. :P
Here's a thought: If a thousand people emailed Leica and requested their new M camera to have a 4K video option, then perhaps Leica would do this? Leica has the video component now. If Canon can disable their 1DX from being a 4K video camera, perhaps Leica can provide the 4K sought after within their camera? Imagine what would happen to Leica sales! One thing to keep in mind, we don't know how good the video truly is in their M camera. The 1DX costs $7000, the same as the new Leica. Could get interesting. Stay tune.
I am curious to know where you got the info about the Leica having 4k resolution option. Could you post the link. thanks :-)
It's common sense. There is NO LOGICAL reason why multi-aspect ratio would have negative impact on the image quality. Second, if it was Panasonic own sensor, the answer to the question: "So it's no a Sony sensor" would not have been "No comment". If it was Panasonic sensor, they would been taking full credit for the sensor. "No comment" is not the answer you give when you have invested millions/billions of dollars developing a sensor. It's obviously not a Panasonic sensor. That's why it's not multi-aspect sensor ...
I like the Confidence with which people say "Common Sense", nowadays. I am assuming, that apart from the Increase in Costs, of Manufacturing a Multi-aspect Ratio Sensor, the costs for wiring the same, would be noticeably higher, too. That may be, a few, among the many other reasons, that Panasonic chose to go with a Sony sensor. Credit for the sensor. Dude, companies outsource so many different components, that, if they were to outline each, it would appear, that they produce nothing. Apple, the world's largest company, doesn't make its own sensors, on its smart phones. They don't make most of the components. They mere design it, and then have it produced in China, outsourcing most of everything else. The ARM processor, is probably being designed in-house (partially), for the first time. There is no shame in outsourcing.

Exclusive - Canon confirm 1D C 4K DSLR is same hardware as the 1D X
sanveer replied to Andrew Reid's topic in Cameras
I guess, its a strange take, on business sense, as well. Whereas, specialised cameras like the Canon 1DC would earn Canon about $6000, per camera (its JUST a random guess :P ), Cameras like the GH3 would get Panasonic about $300 (another random guess). The price difference is great, for huge profits, but, only in the short term. Because, if the GH3 were to sell in hundreds of thousands, and the 1DC were to only sell a few thousands, then, Panasonic, and all other manufacturers of cameras should consider, providing consumers, with similar technology. I am assuming Advertisement budgets would be similar. For one, you pay huge amounts to top Directors and DoPs, and have a niche target audience, mostly penetrated, by word of mouth, For the other, you hire much cheaper actors (nut create expensive Advertisements), and a Huge Marketing Campaign. So, they're kindda drawn. Though, the mass consumption (read GH3), campaign, due to its reach, may be a little more expensive. Also, much better video and much higher resolution, would also, unfortunately, need an Edit Setup (and Grading and Colouring), to match the kindda stuff, that comes out from one of these cameras. Most Laptops and Desktops would not be able to take the workload of a 4k resolution camera. As, a matter of fact, I feel, that if the GH3 were pushed to 210Mbps+ (or whatever the Perfect tranfer rate would be, without burning the processor), and allowed to push itself, as far as dynamic range, true colour and completely flat picture profile were concerned, most modern Indie Film Edit Set-ups, may not be able to handle it. So, its a very strange problem. I hope, that, I am wrong. Though, I still do not believe, that, the price difference is justified. -
I think his answer was not honest. The multi-aspect sensor has no penalty on image quality, either in stills or in video! If anything, it improves the image quality as the various in camera aspect ratios can use the best part from the sensor. It's pretty obvious why GH3 does not have multi-aspect sensor. They are using the stock Sony sensor that is also used by Olympus.
Also, do you have documented proof, saying, that the multi-aspect ratio, is, in no way, detrimental, to image quality?

Everyone seems to believe, that, they share the same sensor. They don't. It has a sensor, which doesn't have a multi-aspect ratio. I too, wish, it did. But, I guess, getting cleaner, more detailed images, for stills, was more important, than any multi-aspect ratio. Cost may have been an issue. Also, Sony may not have had anything, on those lines, for Panny.

I realized, that, all the Cameras (the GH3s, i.e.), at the Photokina, are all suffering from some serious software issues. Some have wi-fis, which were not in order, and others had other issues. It seems to be in the pre-alpha stage, which is, a good thing. Maybe, they can Tweak a lot of things, and get things in order, before, they finally hit the shelves. This could include focus peaking, and that strange aliasing on Panny lenses (probably created, to in order to kill the chromatic aberration, but, misfires, somehow).
-
Does it matter that the Panasonic GH3 has a Sony Sensor. Anyways, maybe Sony offered a great deal to Panasonic, and since the GH2 produced insane video, but, average stills, it was a good idea, to go with a better sensor. Whats the Big Deal???? I am guessing, that, due to the China mayhem, the delivery of the GH3 may be substantially delayed. Maybe, its High Time, the world moved out of China, And, worked upon Quality Control, now that, they are at it. :D
It's possible that aliasing may actually be related to a bug in the electronic lens correction used to adjust for distortion in lumix lenses.
I feel the same. I think, its got to do with the chromatic aberration correction (the 'lens on' feature), and maybe, even the OIS. Will do a series of tests, and, then, perhaps, figure this out.
I havent made a study about it, but usually I've found aliasing (even if very little) in the GH2 when using electronic Panny lenses, but never when using analog lenses. That's maybe why there was aliasing in the market shots (made using the 12-25mm f2.8) from the first video but there's none in that sinlgle shot of the Louvre pyramid (I know the camera doesn't move, but you'd still see it). Still, if you take a look at the 1080p version of the first video, in the cat playing shots, there's a lot of detail.
I noticed this, in the Panny lenses, too. Thee is some noticeable aliasing and monuments having straight lines are not handled properly. I wanted to see, whether it makes any difference with the 'lenses off (/on)' feature.
Keep it, I will be keeping mine, perhaps buying another too.
Dude !!! I was thinking of getting another GH2, as well. Especially, since its prices have been slowing declining. And, it is So amazing.

Vitaly just makes Tall Claims. He has an opinion on Every programmer on the Planet. If he were so smart, Panasonic would have had him, on board, by now. They have their reasons. And,obviously, he has his. He did hack the GH2, and maybe, it made colouring and grading a little easier. But, the picture Profile is Exactly the same. Whether he says than in Russian, or in French, or in English. That won't affect the truth.

This sounds like a monologue, but, I guess, every camera manufacturer is giving us shit cams, under 5k. The GH2 is a miracle compared to the others. The Nikon mirrorless series is a joke. Its worse than bad. Both Canons and Nikon have insane moire and aliasing issues, apart from the very little lines of resolution. their picture profile is nice, but, it feels like those early day Handycams. The Sony NEX 5N and 7, are nowhere close to the GH2, at video. So, we haven't really gotten very far, from the last Photokia. I did realise, after shooting a lot of videos, on my GH2, that the GH2 has insane FLAT picture profile, under certain ideal conditions. ONLY. These are: 1. Seriously Overcast Sky (though, not at very late, in the evening. Because, low light, ruins it). 2. Slightly Over-exposed (about 2 stops). I guess, I'll just hold on to the GH2, for now. It has served me well, and it does some phenomenal video. At a fraction of the cost of the Alexas, the REDs and the Canon C series. The BMCC is good, but, its like a series of never ending investments, starting with SSD Drives, new wider lense, and much higher capacity of editing set-up. The GH2, for now, does everything at a fraction of the cost, and headache.

I got this from Philip Bloom's site: "[background=rgb(240, 240, 240)]the EVF wasn’t working on our model…also I mean hard to work without a monitor as in for me as DP to see what the operator saw and for Bruce as director to see too…"[/background] Obviously, Panasonic were in a Dying Hurry, to just package something, without Testing it, Reviewing it, and Improving things. Please send the damn GH3 back to the factories, and send the Codec back to the Drawing Boards. And, yes, while you are At It, Please, lets see some heads roll, at Panasonic. Beginning with that gentleman, whose English was incomprehensible. Maybe, he was responsible, for it, too. Disappointing Panasonic. Really !!!
-
I think, HONESTLY, that Panasonic should delay releasing the GH3, for Another 6 months, during which time, they should work on their Firmware. Develop a better Codec. There is no excuse for lousy technological developments. Pay a few damn coders Panasonic. pay them well, and we shall wait, patiently for better quality video. Right Now, the GH3 doesn't seem too ready.
-
Having said that, I did notice, that the 'Behind the Scenes' video, was quit soft, by GH2 standards. And, interestingly, pretty flat, as well. :-)
-
Did someone say this before, here (this post or forum), somewhere. If someone did, I concur with that person. The video quality, of the 'Behind the Scene', IMHO, appears to be more impressive, than, that, of Genesis. Maybe, we should wait for the real firmware to be out, and some videos, by a general consumer, to make a real evaluation. Everything else would be harakiri.
-
Its terrible. First Panasonic allowed videos and specs to be released, and then, it removed, everything. I feel like a kid, whose candy has just been taken away, by the school bully. I can't wait till Tuesday. I might die by then. Please send me the numbers of some good lawyers, in Germany. Panasonic had it coming.
I understand your quote about differing markets (no qualms that need to be addressed yet in that area) but the price increase? GH1 - June 2009 MSRP (with 14-140mm) $1499/1500 Later on the lens sold for $850 alone but too much time passed before a body only configuration was available to give useful data] GH2 - At Photokina 2010 MSRP (with 14-140mm) $1499.95 (With 14-42mm) $999.95 Body only $899.95 I do not see a price increase from the GH1 to GH2: they both launched with the same MSRP in a kit lens configuration. We see a pretty strong price increase from the GH2 to the GH3 in a body only configuration.
The GH3 packs a LOT more features. Apart from the weather sealing, the wi-fi, the tablet/ Smartphone sync, the higher battery power, much higher dynamic range (the GH2, apparently has less dynamic range than the GH1), better sound, GPS etc. There are any things, more, we'll figure out, once we get one of these beasts, in our hands. IMHO, the price increase, is, therefore, not completely unjustified.
-
Either that, or weather sealed and weather proof, are 2 different things, one being that it is reasonable resistant to bad weather and shooting conditions like the 7D, and the other to cameras, which can be dropped from a 5 foot height, and are water proof, till something like 15 feet. Or, maybe, its a plain error. Also, doesn't having an articulated screen, make it less weather proof?
