1. Vitaly just makes Tall Claims. He has an opinion on Every programmer on the Planet. If he were so smart, Panasonic would have had him, on board, by now. They have their reasons. And,obviously, he has his. He did hack the GH2, and maybe, it made colouring and grading a little easier. But, the picture Profile is Exactly the same. Whether he says than in Russian, or in French, or in English. That won't affect the truth.
2. This sounds like a monologue, but, I guess, every camera manufacturer is giving us shit cams, under 5k. The GH2 is a miracle compared to the others. The Nikon mirrorless series is a joke. Its worse than bad. Both Canons and Nikon have insane moire and aliasing issues, apart from the very little lines of resolution. their picture profile is nice, but, it feels like those early day Handycams. The Sony NEX 5N and 7, are nowhere close to the GH2, at video. So, we haven't really gotten very far, from the last Photokia. I did realise, after shooting a lot of videos, on my GH2, that the GH2 has insane FLAT picture profile, under certain ideal conditions. ONLY. These are: 1. Seriously Overcast Sky (though, not at very late, in the evening. Because, low light, ruins it). 2. Slightly Over-exposed (about 2 stops). I guess, I'll just hold on to the GH2, for now. It has served me well, and it does some phenomenal video. At a fraction of the cost of the Alexas, the REDs and the Canon C series. The BMCC is good, but, its like a series of never ending investments, starting with SSD Drives, new wider lense, and much higher capacity of editing set-up. The GH2, for now, does everything at a fraction of the cost, and headache.
3. I got this from Philip Bloom's site: "[background=rgb(240, 240, 240)]the EVF wasn’t working on our model…also I mean hard to work without a monitor as in for me as DP to see what the operator saw and for Bruce as director to see too…"[/background] Obviously, Panasonic were in a Dying Hurry, to just package something, without Testing it, Reviewing it, and Improving things. Please send the damn GH3 back to the factories, and send the Codec back to the Drawing Boards. And, yes, while you are At It, Please, lets see some heads roll, at Panasonic. Beginning with that gentleman, whose English was incomprehensible. Maybe, he was responsible, for it, too. Disappointing Panasonic. Really !!!
4. I think, HONESTLY, that Panasonic should delay releasing the GH3, for Another 6 months, during which time, they should work on their Firmware. Develop a better Codec. There is no excuse for lousy technological developments. Pay a few damn coders Panasonic. pay them well, and we shall wait, patiently for better quality video. Right Now, the GH3 doesn't seem too ready.
5. Having said that, I did notice, that the 'Behind the Scenes' video, was quit soft, by GH2 standards. And, interestingly, pretty flat, as well. :-)
6. Did someone say this before, here (this post or forum), somewhere. If someone did, I concur with that person. The video quality, of the 'Behind the Scene', IMHO, appears to be more impressive, than, that, of Genesis. Maybe, we should wait for the real firmware to be out, and some videos, by a general consumer, to make a real evaluation. Everything else would be harakiri.
7. Its terrible. First Panasonic allowed videos and specs to be released, and then, it removed, everything. I feel like a kid, whose candy has just been taken away, by the school bully. I can't wait till Tuesday. I might die by then. Please send me the numbers of some good lawyers, in Germany. Panasonic had it coming.
8.
I understand your quote about differing markets (no qualms that need to be addressed yet in that area) but the price increase? GH1 - June 2009 MSRP (with 14-140mm) $1499/1500 Later on the lens sold for $850 alone but too much time passed before a body only configuration was available to give useful data] GH2 - At Photokina 2010 MSRP (with 14-140mm) $1499.95 (With 14-42mm) $999.95 Body only $899.95 I do not see a price increase from the GH1 to GH2: they both launched with the same MSRP in a kit lens configuration. We see a pretty strong price increase from the GH2 to the GH3 in a body only configuration.
The GH3 packs a LOT more features. Apart from the weather sealing, the wi-fi, the tablet/ Smartphone sync, the higher battery power, much higher dynamic range (the GH2, apparently has less dynamic range than the GH1), better sound, GPS etc. There are any things, more, we'll figure out, once we get one of these beasts, in our hands. IMHO, the price increase, is, therefore, not completely unjustified.
9. Either that, or weather sealed and weather proof, are 2 different things, one being that it is reasonable resistant to bad weather and shooting conditions like the 7D, and the other to cameras, which can be dropped from a 5 foot height, and are water proof, till something like 15 feet. Or, maybe, its a plain error. Also, doesn't having an articulated screen, make it less weather proof?
10. I was just checking the GH3 at samy's (after someone posted the url and information). http://www.samys.com/p/Digital-SLRS/25488/panasonic/116314.html?utm_content=11131378&utm_medium=affiliate&utm_source=cj&utm_campaign=cj_affiliate_sale&utm_term=Canon+EOS+Rebel+T3i+with+Free+16GB+Memory+%26+Camera+Case+on+Point+%26+Shoot+Cameras It has smartphone or tablet linking, which I am assuming, helps do the equivalent of what apps like the DSLR Controller (http://dslrcontroller.com/) do for the Canons (minus all the wiring). So i guess, you just add a Nexus 7, to your list of GH3 accessories, and you have a nice big live monitor, along with all the controls.wow.
11. Yes, I just read that, a little while ago. Am glad. So, maybe with the kit lens, it should be well within $1799 or so (hopefully). I wish they have some fast Panasonic glass at Photokina. Something like the Zuiko f2 zooms. Though, I guess, that would make them prohibitively expensive. hmmm ...
12. If it is, what comes in from seconds 4 to 8, then, it is because of the sunlight, that creeps in, from the curtains. Its a optical illusion. The tassles are caused, due to that. Maybe, if the fan blade was shot at any other angle, it would not be visible (or so apparent).
13. After seeing the built and video quality (and features for sound), of the GH3, I am guessing, it will be noticeably more expensive. Maybe around US$ 2000, with the lens kit (or, maybe, a little under). That's just my guess. Also, because, This Time Around, Panasonic are gonna go All Out, to make sure it outsells (justifiably), all other DSLRs, that record HD Video.
14. Btw, I JUST read Philip Bloom's new posting, on his site, and he just, inadvertently, gave it away (as though, people weren't aware of it, to begin with ;) ). Much better Dynamic Range Great Low Light Capabilities. And a Much Improved Codec :D
15. I think its plain Disgusting, that people make "personal attacks", here, or on any other forum. Maybe we should have a thread for the choicest of "personal attacks", and saying the nastiest shit about people. And, give the winner some cheap chinese-made camera, which has batteries, which explode, on over-charging. Right now, we are discussing technology, film-making, electronic and other things, and lets stick to that, whether in this thread, or otherwise. C'mon guys, lets Grow Up. We aren't adolescents in a ghetto or bronx, showing off our tongues, because we didn't get better opportunities to develop our intellectual or professional skills. Anyone, who doesn't think he(/she) has something to contribute, regarding this, can create their own site/ forum, and discuss whatever seems more interesting. There. Not here.
16. Maybe, Philip n Simco123 (perhaps, DP below) have interacted before: DP3 WEEKS AGO Canon has for years trying to find a way to sell their grossly over priced EF L lenses (chromatic aberrations et al) and here they go, introducing the C100 8-bit 1080i camcorder (1080P only @24fps) … Not even 720P 60? “8 bits. That’s what the pros are using and that is all you need. You don’t need 60P” That’s Canon Marketing for you. Just wait for their lame “Imagine what you can do…” marketing campaign to hit your screen – Canon loves to spend tons of money paying established professionals to say good things about their cameras because Canon has a really, really hard time getting established professionals to actually purchase their products on their own – without asking for promotional compensation. EXAMPLE: Look at the professional DP’s who had Press Releases, Promotional Materials/ Images and Articles already written by the time Canon announced the C100 to the public… They literally have to pay these professionals to use their products. That is part of the reason their products are always over priced. Do you really think Ron Howard thought in his head “Finally, now I can craft the image Iv’e always wanted!” when the C300 hit the market? Hello??? Canon paid Howard a sweet sum of money and promised to promote Ron Howard’s daughter and her film if he promoted the C300… 8 bits… No 60P. HDMI color space. No SDI… AVCHD… Over priced… Who do you think will be the C100 poster boy this time around?Log in to Reply

PHILIP BLOOM3 WEEKS AGO Dude. You need to seriously tone down the vitriol. It’s not needed and way over the top. It’s a bloody camera, nobody has kidnapped your first born! If you don’t like it vote with your wallet! No haters on my site. Thanks P
Its JUST a Wild Guess. I'm no Hercule Poirot ... :D :P ;-)
17. I fell, that, maybe, the reason, that the Video on Youtube, and subsequently, on Vimeo, was uploaded on 720p, was done, for a reason. Maybe, like a build-up, to the real thing. I would wait for 1080p version to come out, and, then, perhaps, make a judgment, on the video quality.
18.
When you sign a contract with Sony to use their sensor, you bet your ass it does (mean something). The contract will stipulate exactly how that sensor can be used.
Dude, your assumption has no edifice. Solid or otherwise.
19. I am also glad, that they shot a portion of their promo, in India (around Old Delhi side, I am guessing, since I haven't been to the downmarket areas, myself, but, which facinate all foreigners ... ;-) :P ). Not many people had heard of the GH2, in India, and considering, that, India makes more films than any other country (in terms of numbers), it would be a great idea, to try and capture, the Indie Filmmaking market, in countries like India, Korea, Japan, Russia etc.
20.
If it is a Sony sensor, then we can kiss the good detail of the gh2 goodbye. I don't think Sony would let the Pany outdo their a99.
It doesn't mean anything. The sensor is just 25-30% of the deciding factor. for the image and video output of a camera. The Nikon D600 and the Sony A99 have the same (Sony) sensor, and, I am guessing, the Nikon produces better image quality, among the two. Also, Sony produces sensors at all prices, so, lets not jump the gun, here.
21. markm "Sorry Andrew will disagree with you on this one. Now people dont forget this is just my opinion so need to insult me with personal attacks or fanboy defences. The original camera run ONLY at 24fps What use is that apart from internet films and vimeo test fan films. Can't record sound seperately and synch it without steps. Only useful for making films to transfer to celluloid if you could afford it and were dumb enough to do it as AVCHD at 8 bit 4,2 0 and 23mbps put paid to any of that. So zero use as a film camera and zero use as a normal one. They did upgrade it to 25fps MUCH later on AFTER Vitaliys hack and AFTER everyone had been crying out for 25p. The camera was intentionally crippled surely we can all see that. How could Vitaliy, Driftwood, manage to get so much more out of it if this were not the case. Working on the assumption it was deliberatley crippled you have to ask what has changed and then have a close look at why the GH3 does what it does. Effectively it trumps the GH2 hacks and may actually stop hacking Next it allows the four thirds lenses to carry on in case people might think panny have deserted it. I'm sure they will desert four thirds next time round though. The GH3 is it an answer to the BMC or to the slew of new cameras coming out now or are they all trying to squeeze Black magic out and recapture what they are losing along with all their mates. Because what they stand to lose is the ability to drip feed cameras with slight improvements. Segment the pro from the consumer and maximise money by small upgrades year on year. Simply because its got so bad (The crippling) That Black Magic can take off the shelf parts and make a camera that has pro res in built and RAW Throw in software worth about a £1000 and sell the whole lot for £2100. NOW forgive me for being cynical on the way we have been treated and are being goat herded into our pens again. I would think different if the new cams just simply had 4.2.2 10 bit out and decent sensors NOT crippled with bad processing. Come on this has gone on long enough and beyond a joke. I am annoyed with camera manufacturers and the way they have done business I applaud Black Magic and want to support their ethos I dont want to see certain maunfacturers herd us all back into our compounds with glossy sales campaigns and guru speel in order to do it. There is no reason why camera manufacturers cant output 10 bit in fact they have to take steps to prevent it from doing so. " Though I think, the hacks were nice, they weren't anywhere 'extraordinary'. The codec was still 4-2-0. The only, possible effect, of the code, was in grading, where the much higher bit rate, helped the video (possibly), from falling apart. Also, the latest 4-4-4 Patch on the GH2 is exaggerated, again. It is Nowhere near 12 bit 4-4-4. As a matter of fact, the FlowMotion V2.02 Hack seemed better (IMO), that the Apocalypse 4-4-4. Also, the BMCC and the GH3 are 2 completely different cameras, meant, for 2 completely different users. Till the exact quality of the video, coming out of the GH3 is not tested, in actual tests (as opposed to videos put out by professional DoPs and guys like those who apparently made the Nikon D600 video), it would be pre-mature, to compare it, to anything else around. The only difference, I noticed, on the GH3, as compared to the GH2, is that, perhaps, those banding issues have been greatly improved (especially w.r.d. to the Sky).
22. That SAME youtube video, is on Vimeo, in (much smaller) parts. That's the same video. Maybe, this has some portions, in the snow, which did not feature in the youtube one, but, its the same video. The built-in programming, for time-lapse, in a very well-conceived idea.
23. Nice video quality, and pretty Flat profile. Though, the Banding, is probably 3-4 times as bad, as on the GH2.
24.
That's funny, you wish you had all these professional audio connections but then you'd pass on the ability to actually adjust audio levels while shooting? Hope you were being ironic...
I would blast anyone, who fidgets with the camera, WHILE shooting. On second thoughts, the button is gr8, cause it has dedicated controls, for video, and hence faster, n less cumbersome. But, Audio, like everything else, should ONLY be fidgeted with, after a shot. Not during.
25. I hope the GH3 gives users the features, the Sony A99 has, for sound. I got his from Imagine Resource: "And then there's the A99's audio feature set. As well as a built-in stereo mic, there's a 3.5mm stereo mic jack. You can also adjust the audio record level, and to assist you in doing so, you can connect headphones via a 3.5mm stereo output jack for levels monitoring. There's also an audio levels display function. An optional XLR-K1M kit mounts on the Multi Interface Shoe, and adds two balanced XLR connections with mic / line input selection and separate level adjustments, a unique capability in the SLR world. (A Sony ECM-XM1 mono shotgun mic is included in the kit.)". http://www.imaging-resource.com/PRODS/sony-a99/sony-a99A.HTM There is also a multi-control dial, in the front, for silent handling, and changing settings while shooting. I don't think its of any gr8 consequence, so it can be passed ... ;-)
