  1. As soon as I get home from work, I'm all over this. As i said before, given the sensor size and flange stabilization is going to be essential. Kinda kills the whole pocketishness in my opinion.
  2. I'm not sure what's more frightening, the prospect of a hedge fund manager who is ignorant of the Law of Large Numbers, or one who pretends he is.
  3.   I'm pretty sure that example is contrived because it is comparing 1080 from the 5D to  2.5K scaled (not properly down sampled) to 1080 from the BMCC (which of course will show worse moire). I think i'll go shoot some pebbles and show you that this video is BS, because everyone cites it all the time and it's very misleading.   But this is not surprising, since It's really just an advertisement for the 5D3, read the comments below the video:   "If you buy a Canon 5D mark III, please get it HERE: goo.com/NoCredibility to reward our efforts"   It also purports to show that the 5D has better DR, which contradicts their specifications, my personal experience, and almost all the footage i've seen on the interwebs.
  4. Moire really isn't that big of an issue on the BMCC if you properly downsample from 2.5K to 1080.  Most of the people showing off terrible moire on it are either doing it intentionally or don't know what they are doing in post. It might be a bit worse than the 5D3raw for moire, but it's way better than the 5D2, and in no way debilitating. That being said, the c100-c300 are in a different class for combating moire and rolling shutter than the rest of the cameras mentioned.    i'm still surprised at all the vitriol in this thread. All these cameras have their place. None of them strictly dominate any of the others when you consider price and feature set, so i'm sure everyone has a good reason to own the tools that they do.
  5. Why the hell is this thread so busy today? Shouldn't we all be out shooting/editing?
  6. https://vimeo.com/71650199     BMCC raw, graded in Resolve and Primiere  Rokinon 24mm, Canon 100mm Macro. Music: "Fractal Universe" by Mat Zo Sunset on the Charles looking at Boston from Cambridge. This started as an idea to see if i could get some rolling shutter grossness (from fast pans), and moire from all the buildings, but the camera did pretty well. I tried out a bunch of different grades and LUTs to give it some variety.
  7.   I still think that all those weaknesses aside, the BMCC still produces a better overall image, except in low light. In daylight it's no contest.  So i think they are pretty well matched (for video), with pretty clear strengths and weaknesses.   BMCC does comes with resolve, but the 5D's ability to do stills is huge, so if you have a real interest in stills, this has to turn the scale back in favor of the 5D3. But now with the BMCC only costing $2000, it's very competitively priced indeed.
  8. For the record: I bought one in April, and i'm not the least bit angry. I figure if it wasn't for BMD, i'd have ended up spending more on a camera anyway.   And even though i'm not religious or spiritual (at all), I think the parable of the vineyard workers applies here:   http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Parable_of_the_Workers_in_the_Vineyard   I really do think it's amazing. There are soo many things that go into film making that are expensive, at this point the camera body shouldn't be prohibitive.
  9. First off, I think this is great. What a deal for this camera.   As an economist, i'm trying to understand how this move fits into BMD's overall strategy. This is what I've come up with: Just a few months ago, the BMCC was supply constrained, so they announce the BMPC and the Pocket Camera to take some pressure off the BMCC. Now it appears that the pocket camera is supply constrained (and the BMPC will be too), so they drop the price of the BMCC, because it's now available.   Just a theory, and probably not 100% of the story, because I'm sure RAW on the 5D3 factored in there somewhere too, but it seems like a strategy to try and limit the frustration with the BMD supply chain SNAFU.   But either way, BMD is really putting it to the Asian manufacturers. I'm sure the Ninja assassins are sharpening their katana blades and catching the next boat to Australia as we speak.
  10. Another solution..   http://www.sonnettech.com/product/echoexpresschassis.html
  11. That's a different lens mount. The iPhone has a tiny sensor, but it's stable enough because it has a tiny bubble lens which gives a decently wide angle.
  12.   Because hard drives don't really differentiate  product lines for Mac.   One of the only reasons people still buy Mac Pros is for access to high end GPUs
  13.     But even the MacBook Pro only offers nerfed mobile GPUs. Right now your only Apple solution for a serious desktop GPU is the (gasp) Mac Pro.  And the only 2GB card they offer on anything else is on a $3000 iMac, and even that is just a suped up mobile card.
  14.   I don't see why it wouldn't. It's got the same ports and a better CPU.   I doubt we'll see official solutions anytime soon though. This would do some serious damage to Apple's meticulous (and highly annoying) product differentiation.
  15. I think the ViDock comes in with built in GPU performance that doesn;t have enough memory to help with editting raw and the like.  I think it's mostly there so your laptop can support multiple monitors.

  17.   If you wanted to fiddle with raw you could go for a 50D, but I don't think that would be the easiest route. The gh2 is classic, and there is no doubt that it can produce an amazing image.  You might want to save a little longer and go for the g6.
  18. Crop factor of the sensor makes the effective focal length of any lens much longer. For example, a Canon 50mm 1.4 will have an effective focal length of 140mm ish on the pocket camera. The longer the effective focal length, the more zoom, and the more stabilization becomes essential. Think about a powerful telescope. If you rotate it even a fraction of a degree, then nothing that was in your original frame will be in your new frame. Look at the new footage that came out a couple of weeks ago, almost all of that stuff was shot with a glide-cam or mono-pod for a reason.
  19. What type of films do you want to make?
  20. I honestly think that a even a shoulder rig will not provide smooth enough stability for the pocket cam's small sensor.
  21. BMCC is definitely no good for live streaming.  You could get all three and still be under budget. Personally I'd go with the c300, and BMCC.  But if you only wanted to get one camera, I think the c300 would be just fine. I think it's a great camera for interviews (kind of expensive). You also might want to check out the Sony f5.
  22.   Agreed, so is there no such thing as bad PUB in this case? I mean the forums have been flooded with people talking about BMD.
  23. Would people be happier with Apple's policy? Not tell anyone anything until the units are in the store?
  24.   Distortion is almost non existent on my 5D2.  It also serves basically as the go to 50mm (because of the crop) on my BMCC.   The 24mm is faster than the 14mm, but it's also 50% more expensive.
