  1. You mean the fake raws like REDcode? When i think raw, i think of "just the data" or at the very least, mathematically lossless.
  2. I'm still stunned that it's taken so long for people to understand the benefits of raw for video. Especially people who were calling for 4K, before raw. But you are probably right, I think that raw will be standard on the >$3K prosumer models that come out in the years to come. I pretty sure this whole 5d raw hack was green-lighted by Canon. Japanese companies love is survey data, and I'm sure it's been telling them that Black Magic was about to eat their lunch.
  3. It the best case scenario this will mean everyone with either a BMCC or a 5D, won't have any excuses....
  4. Looks better than most of what I have seen so far. Although, there might be some dropped frames. 1080 works on embedded, but not on YouTube site. I've always thought that Canon handles grass in bright sulight so nicely (for stills) it's good to see it finally come through in the videos.
  5. Tony Wilson is a very special visitor. As you can see he has posted before, and apparently speaks his own dialect. I think what he is saying is, "whatever makes you happy, makes you happy. So believe what you want to believe, because everything is an illusion."
  6. Shoot in bright sunlight, with bright spots and shadows in focus. expose for the brightest point, then squash the respective dynamic ranges down in post to what is visible in 8 bit. Does that make sense?
  7. In reference to :vimeo.com/66170436 They crushed the blacks so it's not really a really a valid comparison of DR. The BMCC video has been shown to have more DR that 5D3 stills, so I'm not sure why they think the new 5D3 video hack would increase the 5D3 DR beyond its stills capabilities. (looking at the downloaded version) Consider: @ 1:15 (BMCC) you can see more detail in the wood background, and the highlights are not blown out on his face@ 1:23 (5D3) you can see slightly less detail in the wood and his forehead is over exposed. Looks like a clear DR advantage for the BMCC
  8.     Reactionary? No. This sounds more like Canon saying, "Operation RAW-DAWG is going as planned".
  9. It's not just if you get it wrong, it allows you to compress the full dynamic range into whats visible too.
  10. This a huge upgrade for the 5D3. Still not seeing anything on the Alexa level, or anything close. Point it at some faces! we need to see skin tones!
  11. I'm still confused, how is the camera determining which pixels to give you in the "full frame" mode? I see how this makes sense with the 1:1 crop, but i cant figure out how we are getting full frame raw.
  12. For the most part, I don't think pros don't want to mess with hot-rodded cameras. The C300 will still be preferred for it's amazing out of the box IQ and ability to deal with artifacts. Anyway, we'll find out soon enough. If you are right (and you probably are) Canon may freak out. That'll be fun to watch!
  13. lol, I guess all i have now is one more stop of DR! It really does make me wonder if Canon might be behind this, They were finally feeling the heat from the BMCC, and maybe they decided to finally unleash the beast on the 5D3. I wonder what they will say about this publicly. This is great. Can we call it the 5D-C now?
  14. This all came out around right around the not-so-well-recieved release of the 5D3 firmware upgrade, which makes we wonder: did Canon slip some fimrware hints out into the wild?    But I guess it doesn't matter, it's good news either way. Well done ML and friends. I didn't think it was possible, and it looks like i was totally wrong.
  15. Well, he turned Star Trek into aTwilight movie, so i guess we know what to expect.  This might upset me more if Star Wars wasn't dead to me already, and has been since 2002(something snapped inside me while i was watch Ep.2).
  16.   I don't this is necessarily true. Don't they use inter-frame compression on blue-ray?  I guess it has more to do with the implementation. In camera it is probably done very crudely.   Funny, I've always thought the consensus with the 5d3 was too shoot inter (IPB), because it suffered from less macro-blocking.
  17. Couldn't resist this one. After a day of planning, I took a dozen shots of flowers blowing in the breeze. Suffice to say, It all turned out as garbage. At the end of the shoot, I took one shot of my dog, as a throwaway, and it ended up a keeper.    https://vimeo.com/65555790
  18. Here is shot I did of Lechmere T-Station in Cambridge, MA.  Not as sharp as i wanted because i had to shoot through dirty glass, but i got the exposure i wanted...thanks to RAW and Resolve.    https://vimeo.com/65484199
  19.   You are confusing 8 bit, with 8 MBs. I'd assume it would have to be the native bit-depth (14) and use smaller res (but still bigger than 1080)     Keeping the time limit on the raw burst allows Canon to preserve market differentiation with their C-line. And we all know how much Canon likes market differentiation.
  20.   Not at full resolution of course, maybe 8MB Crops, so:  (8MB per frame)X(24fps)X(10 Sec)=1920 MB. 2 GB of ram in cheap.
  21.   With the small buffer you already get a couple of seconds. On the 7D2,  I could see them upping it to 10 seconds, using a decent sized buffer. I doubt Canon would want to rely on CF card write speeds for this feature.
