Canon 5D 2K raw feed update - 1920x720 possible on 1000x card?
HurtinMinorKey replied to Andrew Reid's topic in Cameras
I thought the buffer has a write speed limitation though, independent of the card? I guess you'll find out if you keep sticking faster cards in there and performance plateaus. -
Canon 5D 2K raw feed update - 1920x720 possible on 1000x card?

So we have a consensus, no? There is no way this thing will ever be able to write 14bit Raw at 1080 without a hardware solution. -

I just got my BMCC up and running last week and I wanted to see how the camera would perform under conditions that i wouldn't even try with the ol' 5D: Direct bright sunlight. https://vimeo.com/65017609

I think you underestimate the time it will take for 4K to be commonplace. We're still waiting for true 1080 to be "everywhere".

its raw, so there is no processing involved. I think that they are saying that a raw stream exists that COULD possibly be tapped into. If they can tap this stream, then the only way to get it off board would be through hdmi. However, i seriously doubt this 14bit stream is 24p. But it would be interesting if Canon had this feature hidden all along, in case it did want to retaliate to BMCC. If so, now would be an ideal time to let the cat out of the bag, so to speak.

Highlight roll-offs look terrible to me. I'm guessing I need to look at this stuff in full res detail to truly appreciate it, but the 720 version looks like it still washes out a ton of detail(a la 5D3 style). I wish you would compare it more to the BMCC, rather than the BMPC, since the former actually exists. Also, the 4K 8-bit files shouldn't be bottleneck off your read speeds (are you using thunderbolt for your array?). I can stream the BMCC raw files (which are bigger) off a 7200 sata drive.

The need for the editing gear to progress in the 4K era
HurtinMinorKey replied to Brellivids's topic in Cameras
iMac means thunderbolt, use it. Use external drives for storage and editing, with the requite RAID configuration (RAID 0 for storage). Here is a 16TB Array that supports multiple RAID configs: http://www.bhphotovideo.com/bnh/controller/home?O=&sku=889613&is=REG&Q=&A=details It's expensive, but if you are editing with RAW, read time will be a bottleneck. -
And having the raw is crucial for being able to retain all of the information in that range.

It looks like ghosting to me, which can happen when you put things like 23.98fps into 24fps projects. I learned that the hard way with my ol' 5D2. Are you rendering both of those in the same project? What fps were you shooting the gh2 with?

That looks like a sweet little monitor.

Editing raw video on a $900 Hackintosh as well as on a $5000 Mac Pro
HurtinMinorKey replied to Andrew Reid's topic in Cameras
So i finally caved and bought a BMCC (it arrived today), now i need to get a desktop to tame the beast. I've gone back and forth between Mac OS and Windows(I own both already), and I've finally decided on going with Windows for my workstation. It was a close call, but at the end of the day the the price/power of a WIN desktop won over the ease of use Mac. Here are the specs: ASUS P9X79 WS Sealed Liquid Cooling Systems Overclocked Intel Core i7 3930K 4.0GHz - 4.2GHz LGA 2011 Hex-Core Processor (12MB L3 Cache) 850 Watt Corsair TX850M Single 4GB EVGA GTX 680 Genuine MS Windows 7 Ultimate 64-Bit Edition 240GB Intel 520 Series 2X 3TB SATA 6.0Gb/s, 7200RPM, 64MB Cache 12X Blu-ray (BD) Disc Combo (Reads BD and Writes to DVD/CD) (No DVD/Blu-ray Playback Software Included) Anyone with last minute suggestions, please chime in. -
Another way to think of shutter angle is the ratio of time the shutter is open to the time of the frame. Think of the total window(time lapse) of each frame as being 360 degrees. Assume you are shooting at 24 fps, and each frame is exposed for 1/48, then your shutter angle is half of the total window(1/48 is one half of 1/24), or 180 degrees. In short, at normal fps(24-30), the higher the shutter angle, the more blurry the frames will be, and the smoother your action will look. If you use a really low shutter angle (say you are shooting wide open, in bright sunlight), your frames will be crisp, but your action will might look jittery.

So the basic Scarlet-Dragon total package is still effectively 20,00ish?

Assuming you are shooting RAW, shooting outdoors on a sunny day you'll be able to capture a bit more shadow and sky detail.

But I've yet to see Black Magic claim that the compressed RAW on the BMPC is lossless? They were the ones calling it "visually lossless", and why would they qualify lossless, if it was indeed just lossless? http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Image_compression from the article. "The lossy compression that produces imperceptible differences may be called visually lossless." I'm willing to bet that you will lose a lot of flexibility in grading with this "compressed RAW".
