Blog Comments - 3D a proven failure, 4K unlikely to succeed - HBO
HurtinMinorKey replied to Andrew Reid's topic in Cameras
My 42 inch tv is almost exactly 10 feet away, and i can tell 720 from 1080 like night and day. But i agree that 4K will be lost on most people for the time being, but 10 years from now, giant panels could be the norm and i could see 4K eventually taking hold. -
It would be sweet if it did something like 10 seconds.

Getting the best camera for documentary
HurtinMinorKey replied to Martin Yernazian's topic in Cameras
I think the c300 is the best for handheld documentary stuff. -
looks like the 7D mkii might have a "stills burst" mode in it too. http://www.canonrumors.com/2013/03/eos-7d-mark-ii-test-camera-cr1/

It's just not ready for prime time. One day we'll see something in 3D or VR and say, "Holy Shit". -
The preview frame is not representative at all; but nonetheless, this is sweet. Great use of the GoPro.

What about selective focus? If everything was sharp could this issue be somewhat mediated by choice of aperture? David Fincher likes to shoot wide open when using RED to avoid an overly sharp look.

Sweet interview. This dude's definitely a master. I will take issue with one point you made though. "Known as one of the most fiercely intelligent filmmakers of his generation, in his early school days Kubrick got mediocre grades, which says a lot about how poor our system of schooling is." Public Schools aren't designed to foster/recognize artistic genius, nor should they be. There are designed to make people (most of which are not geniuses in any way shape or form.) useful to society.

I feel like this is still a requirement for film students in many places.

^ you could also do it in Lightroom(3 or 4). Just search for the lime lapse slideshow preferences and download them.

I agree that companies should try and make a profit, but what we see today in the market appears to be collusion, which might be illegal*. The video market is ostensibly "competitive": there are many manufacturers, and the differentiation between products(across manufacturers) is rather small at each price point. You'd expect manufacturers to undercut each other at each feature set, and equilibrium prices to approach marginal cost. Instead we see video features get nerfed on cameras like the 5D3, so that they are essentially on par with its main rival, the D800. *Tacit collusion is not illegal(at least in the US).

That sounds more like a processing limitation than a sensor read limitation, but maybe that happens on the sensor with this one. Either way, something that could shoot for just 20 seconds would cover 99% of the shots i would use.

30fps for 2 seconds would be so much more useful. Although at 60fps it can do something the $26,000 Canon c500 cannot. Internally record 12bit RAW 4K @60fps.

^Awesome work on this guys. This is really an amazing story/achievement. It looks so good it's ridiculous. Hopefully someone can hot rod one to increase the buffer size.

Any idea what bit depth it is? More evidence of collusion by the camera companies....

Canon 5DIII HDMI clean output April 1st, will Canon drop a bomb on us?
HurtinMinorKey replied to JHines's topic in Cameras
Will Canon drop a bomb on us? If by bomb you mean a fat deuce, then yes, they probably will. -
Exploring Nikon D5200 HDMI output - review update

The chroma sample X:Y:Z is a just a reference for ratios of information The use of "4" for "X" is just convention. So in other words, to get 4:4:4 from a Bayer, you need to down sample, then throw away some green, right? Thanks for everyone's input. -

^Yet still no one has explained why a bayer pattern with a 4:2:2 photosite ratio isn't implicitly limit you to chroma 4:2:2. -
Maybe they don't want to go near the F55 because of the pending litigation with RED.

and it still doesn't record RAW internally, same internal codec as the c300.
