Shooting flat in harsh sunlight is one thing, doing it on a cloudy day, i dunno.
Footage isn't color graded. Look at the overall look. Organic and has a filmic appearance. Highlight rolloff not a dslr look.
It says on Vimeo that it was lightly graded.

Alexa like? This video looks way worse than what we have seen previously. Was it supposed to be that flat?

Pretty good comp. But what's with all the landscape shots, and the complete lack of closeups? You guys afraid to get in front of the camera? -
Blackmagic Cinema Camera Review - DSLR killer?
this topic compares 3k usd bmcc video camera to 3k usd stills + video dslr in case of 5dmk3. video part in a 5d is worth somwhere between 750 to 1k usd. 5d is mainly for stills so the stills part is worth more yhan 1/2 of the total prize. we dont know exactly but we can estimate. Therefore, if you compare video only, You CAN’T use the whole price of the product. Can’t ecplain it more clearly. If u don’t understand I’d suggest reading basic economics books dealing with prices. Basically, every comparison on this site is flawed on the fundamental level because it takes whole price of the product of a dslr. hope I don’t sound arogant now. Just pointing out the fact. it has nothing to do with my opinion vs Andrew’s opinion. It’s about setting correct fundamentals for further discussion.
Are you a Canon marketing guy? Nobody is comparing overall value on this forum. All we care about is the video features. For example, when it comes to video quality the BMC takes the 5D3 to the woodshed and teaches it a stern lesson. -
Thanks for the review Andrew. I hope I will get mu MFT mount soon. On the MAC vs PC discussion. I agree with Andrew... Once you go MAC, you just can't go back. :)
That is not true. I have use PC's for work, a MB pro at home, and MB Air for traveling light. Windows VIsta was an abortion, but in my opinion Windows 7 is as stable and more intuitive than Mac OSX. You can get the same mother-board, CPU, GPU on a PC and end up paying 50% less. If you want to compare Mac pro's to something, compare them to HP workstations, which will eat them for breakfast in terms of price for performance. Of course the most cost-effective solution is just to build one yourself, and then choose your OS. -
The CPU is a general purpose processor and raw needs a greater data throughput like 3D rendering does, or texture mapping in games. The GPU is purpose built for this kind of heavy number crunching so better suited to chewing through video than the CPU. But you need CUDA which adds a more programmable interface between the app and the GPU. ATI uses Open CL which is similar but not as well supported in Resolve.
Haven't people been editing 4K Redcode Raw for years on Mac? The top of the line iMac has only a 2GB (mobile) card. Even the outdated pro has only 1GB (deskop) cards. -
I don't understand why Philip wasn't raving about it! The image quality of this camera in my opinion destroys the C300, it is miles more cinematic and 2.5K is a big step up from 1080p when you see it on a large capable display. No NDs, raw storage requirements, all this stuff is relevant but the image quality is the bigger story here. By far.
I think the story is about what raw allows you to do. It's even more important for documentary stuff because shooting conditions are hardly ever ideal. Workflow shmirkflow. I think once people's hardware catches up, so will people's preferences. Try marketing a stills camera without raw, as pro. People would laugh at you. It allows you to nail the exposure curve. -

Images look stunning. Your review did a great job pointing out it's strengths. Using RAW makes it so much easier to get the exposure curve you want. Great stuff. I almost fell out of my chair looking at the shots of the ferris wheel. Couple questions about the hardware. 1.) Why are you convinced the workflow bottlekneck is in the GPU, and not in the CPU or Cache? 2.) Can you please provide the basic specs of your PC? -
I'm editing my raw footage and totally up to speed with it now. First blog post not far off
Come on bro, teaser post at least. We're chompin at the bit.
I'm gonna have to slightly agree with the assessment of the Alexa. Have you guys noticed how a lot of tv-series look very much alike nowadays? Yup, that's Alexa for you. Also I disagree with a lot of these "hyped up" great looking shows. Game of Thrones. Shot on Alexa. Every damn review site claims it looks great. To me? Very average. You can see exactly how each shot is lit. Half of everything is done on a studio stage. No character, no persona. And every show is starting to look 100% the same. It's a great cam but people are using it completely alike.
I call it the "Downton Abbey" look. Oversaturated. Better in the highlights than it is in the shadows.

Once the BMC gets off the ground, cameras that don't offer RAW will be dead in the water with the indie guys. One could argue that RAW is more important to small budget productions than it is to big budget productions because it can compensate for bad lighting.
yes galenb this is the minimum config I came up with not sure if I forgot something But the rig is missing 6'360usd:
You also need a quality lens adapter unless you have a bunch of $10K PL lenses sitting around, right?
Minimum Advertised Price is covert price fixing & is just as illegal here in Europe as it inhibits competition.
Coincidentally I've studied MAP extensively(while I was finishing my PhD), and I think it could end up being an antitrust issue. I think the reason for it's existence is the battle for shelf space at large retailers(or search priority online). MAP guarantees large retailers a certain margin on their sales. It also makes it easier for large retailers to implement price protection policies. My point is, that MAP is a manufacturers response to the retailer's bargaining power. To make a long story short: If you want retailers to market your product, you need to get them demand and a good margin. MAP helps manufacturers do this. But, does it hurt the consumer? I think the simple answer is yes, since it keeps prices high. The counter argument, about it being for the sake of "high service" "mom and pop" retailers is far fetched at best. But it's not illegal, at least not yet.
-
This must be US only as Resale Price Maintenance is illegal in the EU.
Technically it's not resale price maintenance, which is also illegal in the US, because it only refers to the advertised price. People can still sell it for whatever they want, but they can't advertise below the MAP. For online retailers this means if you want to sell below MAP you must make the buyer put the item in the cart before they can see the price. I think if a retailer breaks this policy, they become an unlicensed retailer, and the warranty gets voided. This policy is in effect everywhere(including the EU).

Fuck it. I'm buying one.
Kingswell First this is really nothing to do with Andrew and second although you and myself too wouldnt like it CVP can do what they like with their own stock. If they decide to earmark certain priorities like Andrew whose blog will reach thousands of potential customers then that is a business decision for them and maybe even Black Magic who may or may not have asked them to deliver a camera to Andrew or popular bloggers as a priority.
Bingo.

I gaurantee people won't be watching 4k 50 years from now, it'll be something else. Something from a science fiction novel. My point is that it's all incremental. Perhaps some increments are bigger than others, but there is no need to get righteous about it.
-
No. It is to my benefit that I get my camera early. Does'nt benefit me at all if someone else bar myself gets the camera.
I agree with you. But I also think it's okay to think Andrew earned the right to move up the list.

Disney buys Lucasfilm!! more bombshells!! new Star Wars film due 2015
HurtinMinorKey replied to andy lee's topic in Cameras
All they have to do is make the screenplays for the original three sequel books: Heir to the Empire, Dark Force Rising, and The Last Command. People forget that they were the reason for the Star Wars resurgence in the early 90's. -
75% of 'THE GIRL WITH THE DRAGON TATTOO' was shot with a RED ONE MX by Jeff Cronenweth for David Fincher. The film looks stunning , they only got and Epic for the last part of the filming. I think a RED ONE MX still has lot of life in it! People used Mitchell BNC cameras for 50 years without havng to upgrade to a new model. I would be quite happy to get a cheap used RED ONE MX Im sure it is would be good to use for many years to come!
Funny, I actually thought this was Fincher's worst looking movie. I thought the camera didn't hold it's own with all of the indoor lighting. But I also thought the were using Epic, they used Epic for the social network, why were they using Red ones for TGWTDT?

Nobody here has their camera yet? Looks like I wasn't being pessimistic in my assesment after all.
