Totally legit, good job. Some of the shots of the Golden Gate were amazing. Also, the arial shots were sick. I can't believe how stable and great the footage looks on those quad copter rigs.

The article says that Thunderbolt can only capture HD, and not 4K. How is that possible? Thunderbolt has plenty of throughput. Plus, if it can capture raw from the BMCC, it should be able to capture 4K compressed.

Olympus phase detect strips showing up in E-M1 video

Funny, in that particular frame the effect looks pretty sweet. But it's not something you want forced upon you, nice post. -

Well, it's not like there is an American manufacturer taking over the niche, so I don't think import fees have much to do with it (which haven't changed much and are relatively low). I just don't think there is any demand for this stuff. The phones are what kill this market, and those are manufactured overseas too.- 21 replies

Why I am going with 4K and why you should too
HurtinMinorKey replied to Andrew Reid's topic in Cameras
Things like bit depth really matter for post. I can approximate higher bit depth by downsampling from higher resolution, but the individual precision of each pixel remains the same. So in certain cases, you won't pickup subtle changes in tone. And all else being equal, down-sampling does not afford you better dynamic range. And 4K raw is still way too much data, so you will lose something by going to 4K. As for content delivery, almost eveyone is still stuck below 1080p (besides Blu-Ray). iTunes, Netflix, Cable, almost all of their HD looks like heavily compressed 720p or 1080i. The Canon c300 is a special case, because it uses its 4K sensor not just to down-sample intelligently, but to minimize motion artifacts. Most of the 4K cameras that are going to come out won't be using the same process, and therefore won't get the same benefit from a 4K sensor. -
This is cool for home videos, but since you can't even get honest 1080p (iTunes "HD" is laughable) on anything other than Blu-Ray, i'm pretty sure the 4K revolution is a bit premature.

Kendy's movies are the shit. Just goes to show that good lighting is easily as important as your camera tech.

Not priced like a camcorder though! :D

Maybe, It depends how it's implemented. It's probably 8 bit, 4:2:0. So it could be just like AVCHD, except in 4K.

BMPCC Lens choice for Videoclips and Short Films starting career.
HurtinMinorKey replied to Abraham Torna's topic in Cameras
Not disagreeing with any of the advice but.., Remember, when comparing the Sigma to the Rok 35mm you should shift everything on the mtf chart to the right for the BMPoC, since you will only be using the center of image circle on the Rok (because of crop factor). The difference in sharpness is a bit exaggerated otherwise. Also, if you ever upgrade to full frame, you won't be able to use the Sigma.- 30 replies

The L lenses are good, but the color can be inconsistent across lenses. I highly recommend the Rokinon 24mm. It's my favorite lens. It goes back and forth between my BMCC and 5D. The 16mm is definately less sharp, and its APSC so you can't use it on full frame. I have it, but I don't use it that much (but mostly because I love the 24mm so much) Sigma 18-35 is another popular lens. Sharp, versatile, but it is APSC also.

Still looks like camcorder footage to me. Tons of blown highlights..

For what it's worth, Premiere has a vimeo preset: It's H264, with a target and max bit-rate of 5Mbits per second.

Does having to change to HD in Youtube really piss you off?
HurtinMinorKey replied to Henry Gentles's topic in Cameras
Yes, but not as much as the commercials.
