1. You need to copy whole directory structure of the card with all the files so should use the Canon XF Utility to backup your CF cards to the computer & then import into your NLE. Premiere Pro CS6 will import without any plugin required. Final Cut & Avid require a piece of Canon software as detailed above.
  2. Cinema is storytelling & creating an illusion just the same as reading a novel or listening to a radio play. It's not real life like looking through a window. The smooth motion & detail using this technology when swooping over landscape may work well in creating an illusion but a hyper-real extreme HD close-up may have the opposite effect. We don't see in full widescreen HD our vision actually is more like a soft focus vignette on what we are actually concentrating on but then our centre of attention flicks all over the place to fill in the rest of the details. Cinema & TV has been remarkably successful in creating an entertaining illusion of real life for us over the years but trying to make the images more & more like 'real life' with visual tricks like 3D & HFR etc are not necessarily improving on the illusion.

    Wi-fi SD Cards

I used the Eye-Fi Pro X2 with a Canon 5D3 which has some kind of built-in support for the Eye-Fi card at least it appears in the menu & indicates when it is transmitting. Experiences may be different with a camera that doesn't have this support. I also used it with ShutterSnitch app on the iPad rather than the Eye-Fi app as this was easier to set up. It was straightforward  when connected to a WiFi network but seemed less reliable when set up as an ad hoc network with Eye-Fi card direct to iPad.

    Wi-fi SD Cards

For stills yes I have used an Eye-Fi Pro X2 to shoot tethered to an iPad 3 running ShutterSnitch. Works well. You cannot use it for shooting video as the data rate is too high.
  5. OK, I have done a bit of research & realised that the 14-42mm lens in the video is not as I thought the nasty GH2 kit lens but presumably the H-PS14042E which is indeed a powered zoom lens. The only other powered zoom lens that I can find in the Panasonic line is the 45-175mm H-PS45175E. This is still a really neat full featured remote application & it would be worth getting one of these cheap powered zooms if you ever want to put the GH3 up on a jib or otherwise inaccessible place.
  6. Do my eyes deceive me or is the 14-42mm zoom being operated remotely in that video at about 1:00? I didn't think there was a motor in the lens unless what we are seeing is some sort of cheat with digital zoom.

    OT: Steadicam?

The upper limit for the Pilot is 10lbs. You are always better off in the upper range of capacity so that there is more inertia & the Steadicam flies more smoothly. For DSLRs operators will often use a weight plate (basically a hunk of metal) to bring the load up. Steadicam rigs will also have a minimum capacity which needs to be exceeded before the springs in the arm will take up the the strain & the rig actually work.
  8.
Technically it's not resale price maintenance, which is also illegal in the US, because it only refers to the advertised price. People can still sell it for whatever they want, but they can't advertise below the MAP. For online retailers this means if you want to sell below MAP you must make the buyer put the item in the cart before they can see the price. I think if a retailer breaks this policy, they become an unlicensed retailer, and the warranty gets voided. This policy is in effect everywhere(including the EU).
Minimum Advertised Price is covert price fixing & is just as illegal here in Europe as it inhibits competition.
  9.
they are shipping some...slowly .... Andrew Reed got his last week cant wait to see what he thinks of it!
OK, a correction. They managed to make to make at least one camera. :)
  10.
BMC can't make cameras fast enough right now
Apparently they cannot make any cameras at all as I for one haven't heard of any production models being shipped.
  11.
Canon didn't really raise the prices but is going to enforce the Minimum Advertised Prices: http://www.canonrumo...l-effect-today/
This must be US only as Resale Price Maintenance is illegal in the EU.
  12. On larger productions a proper Steadicam operator will have someone pulling focus using a wireless remote follow focus.
  13. Recording direct to ProRes on a Ninja 2 would make editing quicker & nicer. It should also evade the 29'59" clip length limit as this only applies to recordings on the camera. The clean HDMI out should have no time limitation as it could be feeding a monitor rather than recording.
  14.
Must be concerned about the competition as they are announcing this firmware update 6 months in advance.
Perhaps to compete with Nikon D800 that already has HDMI out the Canon Marketing Department just announced that this will be available leaving the Engineering Department six months to figure out how in hell they are going to provide this feature.
  15. The original download file on Vimeo is still a highly compressed 10Mbps. The full strength Protune bit rate on the HD Hero 3 Black Edition is 45Mbps.
  16. According to a1ex who should know what is fed to the H.264 encode is 1720x974 (550D) and 1904x1072 (5D3).
  17. This must piss off all current Scarlet owners who just saw the residual value of their cameras drop $2-3K
  18.
I'm especially disappointed by the 5D Mark 3, a completely new sensor, but no mayor improvements
???? An extra couple of stops of usable exposure counts as no improvement? The only full frame sensor that doesn't exhibit moire or aliasing counts as no improvement? The 5D3 is a roaring success particularly among its target market of professional & serious amateur photographers.
  19.
Good to hear Jon. You could perhaps try and uninstall the hack and have a look at the quality the camera produces, then compare with the hacked. I began with hacking mine when I got it, tried without for a while, and never hacked again other than freeing the PAL/NTSC, ISO and time restriction. The GH2 is a magnificent tool even unhacked, and the various hacks can change that a fraction, but often at the cost of instability, more noise, time spent and more expensive cards needed. I'm sure I'll be stoned for this heresy, but just give it a chance and see for yourself ;o) Be sure to use a good screen when comparing though!
+++100% There is an enormous amount of Placebo effect with the GH2 hacks.
  20.
EOSHD: And that is also due to the European tax issue? Jesko: Yes that is true (29 minutes) 6200 € (8000$) and they are saving with recording devices tax? Is that tax proportional to the price of the camera? Simon.
The import duty on video cameras is 4.9% of the wholesale price (or rather the quoted value at import) so not that big really but if your market is 99% stills photographers it might be a consideration in keeping the price down. Of course if Leica manufactured this camera in Germany (or any other country in the EU) then it wouldn't be an issue as this duty is only levied on imports from outside the EU or EEA.
  21.
That Canon/BMC comparison should shut a few mouths in the Canon camp :D
Why? That video review appears to be comparing the BMCC to the Canon 5D3. The discussion in this thread was about comparing the Canon C300 & the BMCC,
  22. Have they fixed the stupid way that you adjust aperture/shutter? On the GH2 the adjustment is on the same wheel & you press to toggle between shutter & aperture (M43 electronic lenses only of course). This is the biggest single ergonomics issue that I have with the GH2 as it's so easy to accidentally adjust shutter speed when changing aperture. It looks like the GH3 is a bit larger than the GH2 which always feels like a fiddly little toy in my admittedly large hands.
  23.
Reverie moment? I doubt it. Reverie actually still looks kinda amazing. With the low res contrasty 30p image. I guess Vincent can really photograph stuff.
The blog about how they came to film Reverie is an interesting read. It was an early production model 5D2 & they had no user manual so just had to wing it. It was shot at 30fps on auto-everything. Compare that to the BMCC or GH3 demos filmed with a full crew, lighting & extensive post production.
