When you order from B&H you have the option of paying all custom duty, taxes & other fees up front so that you don't get any nasty surprises when the camera arrives. B&H are probably the largest photographic dealer in the US & have some amazing bargains at times. http://www.bhphotovideo.com

I was very pleasantly surprised at how good the Panasonic 14-42mm PZ kit lens is. It was only the equivalent of an extra $100 or so when I bought my G6 so I thought 'Why not?' & am glad that I did. The Olympus equivalent is supposed to be a good lens too but of course lacks the IS of the Panasonic & the newer lenses like mine have power zoom too.

It's not messing up the image with dumb gimmicks per se that I think is stupid. It's messing up the image in camera so the look is baked in. It's better to get a neutral well exposed image in camera then if you want some contrasty B&W dynamic look do it in post so that you have some control over it.

Why on earth would you want to use a dumb gimmick like creative filters? If you want to mess up the image then do it in post with the best possible image as shot. This silly stuff us just targeted at amateurs.

Panasonic GM1 review - another pocket cinema camera
nigelbb replied to Andrew Reid's topic in Cameras
I had a GM1 in my hands today. It really is tiny but still usable. The little zoom lens is neat too. This might be an ideal camera to use locked off in situations where previously I would have used a GoPro not because I wanted an action camera but just because the GoPro is small & discreet. The GM1 image quality & low light performance is far better than the GoPro for not much more money. How good is the battery life? -
I routinely use Quick AF before pressing record. This flips down the mirror & hits focus just like when taking stills then flips the mirror out the way again. After pressing record you need to focus manually. I really couldn't tell one or another if there was anything wrong with that video as YouTube compresses so badly. It looked OK just remember that all the Canon DSLRs are pretty soft & don't have anywhere near the resolution of a Panasonic GH2/GH3/G6 or even a proper camcorder. This is often an advantage as it is flattering on close-ups of faces.
-
The BMPCC has much higher resolution than the 5D3 unless you shoot RAW with the Canon. However with the small sensor on the BMPCC you probably need to use a Speedbooster t get a normal wide angle lens for landscapes
-
A big difference is that the Panasonic has image stabilisation built into the lens whereas there is none in the Olympus as they don't need it as they have that amazing 5-way stabilisation built into their cameras.

Really? I can think of lots of reasons. The 14-140mm lens (28-280mm FF equivalent) is a not constant F/2.8 aperture (in fact far from it at F/3.5-F/5.6) nor is it a power zoom. Maybe the new version is par focal but the old one wasn't. The Sony RX10 is a quite a lot cheaper than a GH3 plus 14-140mm combo. Here in the UK it's £999 vs £1299 The Sony RX10 has built in ND filters. The Sony RX10 has a step less aperture ring. Of course there are points in favour of the GH3 e.g. larger sensor but it all depends what you are shooting and whether it's your only camera but it's by no means obvious that the GH3 & 14-140mm is a better choice. There are some excellent clips of RX10 video posted over on Vimeo e.g.

This is your answer. The softness of the Canon DSLRs is actually an advantage for close-ups of people as it's flattering but for wide shots of landscapes it's probably not the best camera to use. I didn't think that the little clip that you linked to was awful just not great. The two lenses that you have are good & sharp particularly if you stop down at F/8 or F/11. Stopping down to F/22 is not such a good idea as you can get diffraction artefacts when you have the lens stopped down at F/16 & beyond http://www.cambridgeincolour.com/tutorials/diffraction-photography.htm

My HD Hero 2 does 24p (& 25p & 30p) 1080 so I am sure that the newer Hero 3 & 3+ models do as well.

Perhaps people would like to use my referral link instead & get 20GB of free cloud storage https://copy.com?r=7Cadj6 :) Seriously copy.com is a good solution for modest amounts of cloud storage & 20GB is 10x more than the free allowance on market leader Dropbox. There is no reason not to have both.

You can go the DIY route http://diydrones.com/profiles/blogs/hand-held-gimbal-remote-focus-rec-start-stop-auto-focus

The advantage of MP4 vs. AVCHD is that you have a single easily accessible file rather than having to negotiate a complex file structure. The disadvantage is that you are limited to 30 minutes recording time.

Blackmagic would need to have reliable distribution supplying Amazon before that could happen.

Thanks for confirming that my impression of ML development was accurate. It's an amazing achievement & congratulations to all concerned but I just wish they would develop it like other open source projects & put a stake in the ground on a version & fix & debug that before adding more features. RAW video is such an interesting novelty that it seems to have diverted the developers from even looking at fixing broken features that are arguably of use to more shooters e.g. my pet peeve with Movie Restart not working on the 5D3. a1ex's word on the subject is "I have absolutely no use for movie restart, so I'm not going to fix it (especially since a single testing attempt is going to take half an hour)." http://www.magiclantern.fm/forum/index.php?topic=7592.0;topicseen

Olympus EM5 vs Panasonic GH3! Need your opinion/help!
nigelbb replied to JackHorror's topic in Cameras
Can you still buy a new GH2? A G6 is at least as good as a GH2 without mucking about hacking it & having ridiculous bit rates filling the cards so fast. A G6 is quite a bit cheaper than an OM-D E-M5 or a GH3. The Olmpus produces the best still photographs though. -
Ingenious but why would I want to do this?

Olympus EM5 vs Panasonic GH3! Need your opinion/help!
nigelbb replied to JackHorror's topic in Cameras
This is not my experience. I have shot the E-M5 with ISO3200 & it's noise free. The E-M5 has the best low light performance of all MFT cameras for both stills & video except probably it's bigger brother the E-M1 when that ships. I don't own a GH3 but do have a G6. The video on the G6 is better quality than the Olympus but the IBIS is so damn good that I more often than not use the OM-D as it allows utterly stable hand held footage. The fact that the G6 has more detail & shoots 50p is not as important as the fact that the usability of the OM-D is so impressive. People get hung up about the fat that it only shoots 30p but I just shoot at 1/50 & drop the clips on a 25p timeline & Premiere Pro does its magic & matches it up with 25p from a Canon 5D3 & 50p footage from the G6. -
Surprise! New Sony RX10 sensor has 5K full pixel readout
nigelbb replied to Andrew Reid's topic in Cameras
Gordon Laing has posted some short clips from the RX10 on Vimeo with the original .mts files available for download. The detail looks pretty amazing & it's noise free at ISO3200. The continuous AF is impressive too. He has obviously found a new niche doing camera reviews Camera reviews, DSLR reviews, lens reviews, photography guides | Cameralabs -
It's wrong to blame market conditions for poor DSLR sales
nigelbb replied to Andrew Reid's topic in Cameras
In the 1950s the TV manufacturers used to worry about what would happen when they reached market saturation and every home had a TV. They didn't see that people might want a TV in the bedroom or the kids room or the den. It is however a little different with a camera. Joe Public only really needs one decent camera & before he purchases another it needs to have significant advantages over his current model. It is the same for digital as it was for film cameras. Smartphone photos don't really compete on quality with even the cheapest point & shoot but they have the advantage of convenience. I am sure that the quality will improve. There was a Sony Ericsson phone that was basically a pretty decent digital camera with a phone attached when the camera in a smartphone is capable of that sort of quality the days of low end digital cameras may be over. -
Detailed Panasonic GH4 rumoured specs - 10bit 4:2:2 and 4K video
nigelbb replied to Andrew Reid's topic in Cameras
It's a lot more controllable addling a little gentle movement in post & I was thinking more of a sideways or diagonal movement than zooming in anyway. -
I don't take out my 5D3 unless it's a paid gig. I used to rely on just taking snaps with my iPhone but lately have started taking my Olympus OM-D E-M5 as while obviously not as small as an iPhone does fit in my jacket pocket. I have even started to taking both my OM-D & Panasonic together with me in a bum bag (US trans. fanny pack) on my hip.

Here in the UK the GH3 is almost double the price of the G6 (£869 vs £449 body only).
