Detailed Panasonic GH4 rumoured specs - 10bit 4:2:2 and 4K video
nigelbb replied to Andrew Reid's topic in Cameras
Adding movement to a shot with a gentle Ken Burns effect is a very common trick in post as an alternative to movement produced by using track & dolly (or slider on a smaller production). It works well with just enough movement to be interesting but not so much that the lack of parallax becomes apparent. -
New Sony A7, A7R and RX10 - exclusive hands-on look at video quality
nigelbb replied to Andrew Reid's topic in Cameras
The EU has a 4.9% tax on imported camcorders. A camcorder is defined as a camera that records HD video for 30 minutes or more. The camera manufacturers prefer to keep their prices that few percent lower by either restricting their cameras to only shoot video for 29'59" (Canon, Olympus, Sony) or like Panasonic produce a PAL model with the limit and an NTSC one without. -
Jack Cardiff also wrote a fantastic autobiography called 'Magic Hour'. It's a real insight into how cinema developed (he started working prior to WWII). He also shot 'The African Queen' & a host of other major films. http://www.amazon.co.uk/Magic-Hour-Movies-Jack-Cardiff/dp/0571192742

The Panasonic G6 is a great little camera and must be the best value for money in the price range. The little 14-42mm PZ kit lens is fine too until you can afford some more exotic lenses.

Your enthusiasm does you credit but also gives you tunnel vision. Sorry to burst your bubble but the predominant market for Panasonic stills cameras even quite capable hybrids like the GH3 & G6 is overwhelmingly for taking still photographs. -
The WiFi app is neat but is no real alternative to an external monitor. It is great for getting the framing correct on an unmanned or out of reach camera but I would not really want to use it to pull focus etc as it's a bit laggy.

Neither. Save up so that you can afford to buy the Canon EF-S 17-55m F/2.8 IS. It is so much nicer than the Tamron. When I bought a 600D I bought the Tamron as I was loathe to spend more on the lens than I had on the camera. Long story short I returned the lens the next day & bought the Canon instead. The Tamron is slower to focus. Needs to be switched between AF & MF has a really noisy AF motor plus it focuses & zooms the wrong way compared to all my Canon lenses.

In depth test - 5D Mark III and 7D Raw vs Blackmagic Pocket vs GH3
nigelbb replied to Andrew Reid's topic in Cameras
Unfortunately this does not work for two reasons. Firstly the current version of ML does not work with the current Canon firmware that supports clean HDMI out. Secondly ML can only write RAW to the compact flash card & not to HDMI out & an external recorder. -
I am amazed at the number of photographers that I meet who have video capable cameras but have never shot a single second of video. I doubt that the reverse applies so I am sure that most (all?) of us using DSLRs for video also use them for stills.

GoPro HD Hero 3+ It's small simple tough & has reasonable video & audio quality. It will also work well if the authorities bring out the water cannons at the protests.

I have an Olympus OM-D E-M5. The video is limited because it only shoots 30p (not a problem for the OP if he is in US) but the quality is decent enough. Not great but good enough. The 5-way IBIS is amazing though & makes the camera worth using just for that point alone. Nothing screams 'amateur' so much as shaky hand held footage. The OM-D E-M5 has full manual control when you set it to video. If you are using one of the still photo modes (P,A,S or M) then press the video button it shoots all auto. This caught me out when I first used the camera. I also own a Panasonic G6 & while the stills aren't quite as nice as the OM-D E-M5 it shoots very very nice video but lacks the stabilisation of the Olympus. The OP already has decent lenses. If he really wants another camera then I can thoroughly recommend the G6 especially as it is so cheap but TBH the OM-D E-M5 is plenty for his video needs.

CineForm Raw and Cinema DNG converters now available for 5D Mark III raw
nigelbb replied to Andrew Reid's topic in Cameras
Unless I missed something thar raw2cfraw does not operate on Magic Lantern 5D3 RAW video files just .CR2 stills sequences. -
Panasonic have the DMW-GWC1 wide angle adapter that converts the 14mm F/2.5 to an effective 11mm i.e. 22mm FF equivalent. It's pretty cheap & has decent reviews http://www.panasonic.co.uk/html/en_GB/Products/Digital+Camera/Lumix+G+Lenses/DMW-GWC1/Specification/8535418/index.html

I think that is a MFT thing as unless you have some very wide aperture lens (not the 14-42mm kit lens) you won't get the shallow DoF of the Canon DSLRs. The increased resolution of the GH2/GH3/G6 compared to a Canon DSLR is also a reason why it looks like camcorder video. The softness of the Canon image is actually very flattering for head shots especially at F/2.8 or more.

Not all camera manufacturers make different PAL & NTSC models. Canon used to but all their DSLRs & the C100/C300/C500 have 24p 25p & 30p. Panasonic for some unaccountable reason strictly divide up the world into 25p/50p & 30p/60p areas. It's not as though they are price gouging in PAL regions so they would worry that grey imports of NTSC cameras would impact sales. Panasonic have a 30 minute recording limit for PAL models but no limit on NTSC whereas Canon DSLRs do have a 30 minute recording limit for all models The European camcorder import duty thing is nuts. To be fair it is more than €5 as it's 4.7% of the wholesale import price but that would only amount to around €100 on a 5D3 or just €25 on a G6 or 650D. I realise that the major manufacturers are keeping the price down as the vast majority of DSLRs & CSC would sell even if they had no video function but it's a shame that they don't give users the option. Nikon sell the D800E which is a D800 without an anti-aliasing filter & I suspect that the specialist market likely to be interested in this variant is much smaller than would be interested in paying an extra €100 to get a 5D3 with no recording limit.

Shooting solo with 3-4 cameras I will come home with 100-125GB mostly 5D3 footage at about 4 minutes per GB. My largest shoot at a really big Jewish wedding with two other camera operators was about 300GB.

You are almost certainly panning too fast. It's really surprising just how slow you need to do it. If you can't pan slowly enough it's better to do a whip pan as the brain accepts that better than the jitters of a fast pan.

In that case the GH3 battery life must be industry leading as I just tested recording time on my G6 & it filled a 32GB card with over 2.5 hours of footage & still there was battery life left. Are you claiming that the GH3 battery will last over 5 hours? BTW I tested a cheap clone battery & it was only good for less than 90 minutes so while at 1/3 of the price of a genuine Panasonic battery it's better value for money per minute it does mean that it's less convenient as you need twice as many batteries.

New Olympus E-M1 with "moire reduction" but no 24p
nigelbb replied to Andrew Reid's topic in Cameras
The colour creator feature is just a gimmick like having scene modes. Why would you want a burned in colour grade when you have more control doing it in post & can change your mind & try other grades. With thus feature if you shoot in B&W it stays B&W. -
New Olympus E-M1 with "moire reduction" but no 24p
nigelbb replied to Andrew Reid's topic in Cameras
It's certainly got nice detail on what is potentially a challenging subject that would have the E-M5 video CODEC struggling with long grass leaves on a tree & ruffled water on a lake in the background. -
Unless you are dead set on shooting RAW then forget the 7D as it is the worst of all the Canon DSLRs for video. The image quality on the 600D will be equivalent & you also get the articulated screen, 3X crop mode, cheaper SD cards plus €310 in your pocket.

Does anyone have any experience with shooting video on the GF6? From the specifications unlike the GH3 & G6 it doesn't do 50p 1920x1080 but otherwise looks OK on paper at least. The price is really cheap. Here in the UK it's under £400 with the 14-42mm kit lens & I see that in the US it's under $500. It's got no EVF but it can be remote controlled by a smartphone over WiFi. It could be a good locked off camera for a wide safety shot.

Not on this evidence & half the shots are apparently in ETC mode https://vimeo.com/71873796
