BMPCC + Lumix X 12-35 - ideal combination?
marcuswolschon replied to voyagervideo's topic in Cameras
I now have a 12-35mm on my BMPCC. Not having an aperture ring but having to press iris+up/down (breaks your fingers) is indeed a pain. Especially since you have to do that every time you switch the camera back on and you can't keep it on because the battery is dead in no time. Manual focus is good. I just keep changing the zoom leven instead of focus as I'm used to having focus on the large wheel. (My always-on was the 25mm f1.4 prime up to now.) I did not notice any visible distortion but will look more closely. The brightness was fine. Noticably darker then my 25mm f1.4 but still more then enough. The BIG plus of this lens is the OpticalImageStabilization of the 3rd "power" generation. I was able to use it handheld without any shoulder support and minimal deshaking in post. No motion blur due to slight camera shaking. Smooth, slow pans handheld. The lens is quite big and heavy and does reduce the stealth-factor of the BMPCC. But until the 12-42PZ pancake is fully supported (lens folding up + OIS without a switch) this is acceptable. -
Hands-on preview of the powerful 4K shooting Panasonic GH4!
marcuswolschon replied to Andrew Reid's topic in Cameras
"*1 Motion image can be recorded up to 29 min 59 sec depending on the recording format and the camera’s sales area." This is rediculus. They really kept to this stupid 30min Limit in a professional video recording camera!!! Are they out of their minds? -
Panasonic GM1 review - another pocket cinema camera
marcuswolschon replied to Andrew Reid's topic in Cameras
No 29min59s recording limit as a con for this camera when you compare it with the BMPCC? I think that's MAJOR con for all these unhacked photo cameras unless you can at least import a non-EU model that allows for PAL framerates (world-cam). Most of them are sadly NTSC only and thus don't work well in countries with a 50Hz power grid. -
8 Cinema DNG shots from Blackmagic Pocket Cinema Camera raw
marcuswolschon replied to Andrew Reid's topic in Cameras
Did you have any issues with a 180° shutter? The changelog doesn't mention this as being fixed yet and for me 25ps 180° has a slight but noticable stutter. Any other shutter angle (e.g. 172°) works fine. -
At least in German, when you register: you are asked for your country when you did not enter a company name. (I don't have a company but aparently Blackmagic doesn't think of private individuals as possible customers.)

In depth test - 5D Mark III and 7D Raw vs Blackmagic Pocket vs GH3
marcuswolschon replied to Andrew Reid's topic in Cameras
When comparing these for video, don't forget: * video recording limit (GH3: 30min in EU because still unhacked, BMPCC: card limit+external power option, 5D+7D ?) * ability for an external microphone (GH3+5DmkII yes, including displayed levels, BMPCC records low, noisy audio levels, no display) * avaliable frame rates (GH3: PAL or NTSC decided at purchase, BMPCC: all options). Think travelling abroad here. * LANC (BMPCC only. Start/Stop okay. Zooming doesn't seem to work. Focusing not tested yet.) -
Cinema DNG support coming to Adobe Premiere CC in October
marcuswolschon replied to Andrew Reid's topic in Cameras
Let's hope the Cinema DNG support also finds it's way into Lightroom. I have absolutely no desire to ever enter this monthly "Creative Cloud" payment thing. (You can already work with Blackmagic DNG files in Lightroom. I did it and it works fine. Lets you reuse your photgraphy-lightroom skills for video. ;) ) -
I stopped waiting for the GH3 to get hacked and thus finally support >29min59s of PAL(25fps) video recording and preordered the Pocket Cinema Camera. Sure, in comparison I may loose high ISO capabilities, the ability to make photos, the articulated screen, wireless control of my (updated) Metz flashes. But I'll gain 13 stops of dynamic range, LANC, the outlook to future raw support, uncrypted, cheap batteries and battery charging while connected to 12V, loose weight instead of gaining bulk and weight. With the 14-42X or 14mm pancake this will fit my pocket even better then the GH1s and GH2s did (and still do. B and C camera will stay GH2 and I'll sell the GH1). What do they say? The best camera is the one you actually have in your hand. So it was an easy decision. The 30 minute video recording limit in Europe killed the GH3 for me. I'm looking forward to the dynamic range. It's the reason I had been eying fullframe cameras (and found them all catastrophically flawed for video). In the real world pale white people are wearing black T-shirts...en masse and dance events have extreme dynamics. I hope to compensate any low light issues with light, my fast mFT lenses or by falling back to the GH2.

Panasonic GH3 real-world test (pre-production firmware)
marcuswolschon replied to Andrew Reid's topic in Cameras
Why does Panasonic advertise with it's new dynamic range, yet provide no numbers for it? Did they re-introduce the PAL/NTSC switch firmware 0.4 had that got removed in 0.5? (=will I be able to import a JP/AU/CA/US model to not have the 30min limit in Europe instead of donating+waiting for a hack) I guess there's no news about how the remote TTL works (flashes/IR/radio/wifi-radio) and if it's compatible with the Olympus remote TTL protocol? (=existing Metz flashes work) -
This is a small concern, but is there any word on the recording time limit for Quicktime MOV mode?
Spec says 29min 59s. So without a hack the camera is useless for longer video. Peaking=FOCUS peaking. Not making the areas with clipping blink.
-
USB 2.0 instead of USB 3.0 ??? HDMI is switchable between clean and video+controls.
-
Was the peaking actually mentioned in the presentation? Anything about it that actually comes from Panasonic?

Multi aspect ratio: http://panasonic.net/avc/lumix/systemcamera/gms/gh3/specifications.html the resolutions don't look like multi-aspect. Same horizontal resolution in 4:3 and 16:9. With a multi-aspect sensor they would be different like on the GH2. There is mention of an Ex-Tele mode in "live view" on the spect at http://panasonic.net/avc/lumix/systemcamera/gms/gh3/specifications.html
-
I see one *strong* reason for a hack: As it was never mentioned, I have to expect the 30 minute recording limit to still be present. This would be unacceptable for recording events as opposed to scene-by-scene filmmaking.
-
how is this relevant to the question of what people use aa counter weight?

What do you have on the back of your shoulder rigs to balance them when shooting with the light GH2? Do you use external battery packs? (Powering what?) Dead weight? Perhaps an audio recorder? (But you have to rely on it's remote control now.)
-
Filmcity/DFocus has issues with the screws loosening and it's huuugely oversized for a GH1/GH2. More something for a full frame body with battery grip. The Queenox/Koolertrom/... from china has hexagonal instead of round shafts and is much smaller. http://www.amazon.de/Quenox-Sonnenblende-Kompendium-Systeme-Schulterstativ/dp/B005TQ1J9G/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1344408317&sr=8-1 It isn't as fancy but works and is lightweight and small. No filter holder. You have to cut some foam rubber for the back side yourself.

RC2. You have to decide on mounting the plate lengthwise or across. There are Manfrotto heads for both but many 3rd party devices (e.g. B-Grip or Calumet tripods) only support the across-mounting that blocks the battery door.
