Test footage from the pre-release Panasonic GH3 at Photokina
zephyrnoid replied to Andrew Reid's topic in Cameras
I've noticed the yellow/green cast as well. It's one of the things I hoped the GH3 would fix. A plugin called FilmConvert is a good fix. It makes grass look like grass again without changing skin tones etc. Otherwise I've had some success by doing a white balance for every setup and avoiding auto or preset white balance.
The trouble seeems to be localized. What I have no dubbed "Nato Orange Cast" is not an overall cast so if you WB on a pure white card ( i never do BTW) it will not solve this particular problem. The screen grab below shows the radishes almost perfecty natural, whereas the carrots have that Nato Orange Cast. I think it's partly the 4:2:0 space, but I donlt know these cameras.
Hey Andrew, just a quick note regarding gamma.... if the blacks were truly being crushed and the whites clipped, I wouldn't have been able to recover that information in the left image. I have literally just lifted the blacks and brought down the highlights on the left image using levels in photoshop. :)
Well monitors matter a lot, as is the proper calibration thereof. Indeed that a histogram will deliver a numeric read of the image, irrespective of monitor calibration. Obviously, a $4,000 FSI costs what it costs because of how accurate its CLUT is in depicting the full scale & gamma of an image. -
Looks like the greenish cast is just as bad if not worse on the Genesis BTS video (shot on GH2) between 1:06 and 1:09. Has to be either the ambient light or a similar white balance issue.
I'm seeing a LOT of that icky yellow/green cast in other GH3 foootage around. I think there will be an intresting opportunity for anyone that wants to do a side by side comparo of the GH2/GH3/and another camera, so as to ferret out which modes are spitting out that horrid cast. With the 4:2:0 constraint, I'd hate to deal with pulling that particular cast out of all my footage in post. -

Well. Andrew. I made some screen grabs. I wish you'd clarify the big variances in the Juggler's skin tones. Was that due to different angles/lighting or did you grade clips differently? Not bad footage considering the fixed lighting. -Highlights blown out on the juggler's shirt - Mixed color grading on the juggler's face? I noticed the same 'yellow' cast on the face tones of the heroine in Genesis. Is this a characteristic of this camera's CLUT ?? - Loved the slo-mo! If Panasonic take your advice to heart and make those fixes on released firmware, price drop on the kit with the 12-35... I might be willing to overlook the potential edge detail issues. After all, they are nothing a filter can't solve. did you shot any stills?? -

I'm in Maryland- near bye BTW :)
the GH3 seems like a downgrade from the GH2 in terms of usability.
I sure wish people would stop using a term that they don't understand precisely. Usability , Funtionality or the right feature mix? > They are different terms. The GH3 looks to have a higher Usability Quotient than the GH2, though I see that some functionality has taken a downgrade in the inevitable juggling of specifications. ONLY a direct side by side challenge will resolve doubts.

Excellent Interview! You covered almost all the key questions and I can tell you could have gotten more if the Interviewee hadn't cut you short! • Since the lenses are electronic "would it be possible to have an accessory that allows an electronic follow focus (USB)"[in addition to the existing external manual ring] ? Looks like it could be in a future firmware option right? I mean if the USB connection is I/O and it connects to the CPU/ROM then its just a firmware tweak and an external control device, right? •Based on some unhappy reports of the GH3's image colors(CLUT), the lack of 4:2:2 color space is going to make Color Grading hard for serious Color Workers. I notice from the demo Movie, Genesis, a bunch of questionable color palettes in the available light shots. We'll definitely have to put this camera to the acid tests in post. Good Job! We are getting there.
The moire on the GH3 is extremely disappointing, and it got me thinking. As long as we're shooting videos with sensors designed for still images, we're always going to suffer from it. A truly balanced hybrid like the GH2 seems to have been a mere fluke. It's all well and good to see projects like BMCC and Digital lolex, but there's another gaping hole in the video camera market needing to be filled, and that's for a small interchangeable lens camcorder with a M4/3 or larger sensor designed for video, priced at $1500 or below for the body. A camera like that would be huge with low budget filmmakers, guerilla shooters, kids who want to make backyard movies, you name it. The market is crying out for it right now. Sony have come the closest to providing it, but they've intentionally crippled them by reusing NEX and A99 sensors. What they are doing with that line is as bad as if Canon had put Powershot sensors in their Vixias. Footage looked pretty bad for me considering the tests are surely made to hide those sorts of artefacts.
RE"kids who want to make backyard movies," Nope. Panasonic made it clear that this is NOT their market. I'm convinced that at $1,250 for a body and a firmware tweak or a filter in place, a little Moire will be the least of our worries. Frankly, 4:2:0 color space cuts a much bigger chunk of potential customers out of this camera due to issues grading in post & Color key. At $1,250 it's a steal when you consider that a premium DSLR cost that 6 years ago with nothing like these features.
My analysis for my next buy, pluses and minuses: Lumix GH3: +Nice codec +Adaptable lenses -The 8Bit 4:2:0 is a little let down in my list, hoping for 4:2:2 for better green screen work -Lack of a XLR adapter as Sony. Sony a99: +Uncompressed 4:2:2 +EVF and LCD screen -Aliasing and moire problems -AVCHD codec So? i guess i will go for the GH3.
Or wait for the rumored Olympus 'Pro M43'

Good JOB on the mini review. I spotted this typo..."Build quality is a great improvement over the GH3" obviously meant to be.. over the GH2. Other than the issue that you pointed out, can you tell if there is any DC.Power IN socket or connection? Are these cameras only powered with dedicated batteries? That could be a problem on long video takes/shoots.

I know about the upconing battery pack. Great. BUT is there any idea of a DC IN jack for AC/DC power? It's hard to believe Panasonic has come this far in video, without providing access to external power. I mean, with unlimited video capture, I'd hate to be chaning battery packs or grips in the middle of a job. -
TYPO ? " Slow motion "Like the FS100 the GH2 can record in an S+Q mode...."

I'm doing a compilation of tabletop lighting tents/booths for the photography of small subjects,. I found this..... PlexiTent https://vimeo.com/47178587 Anyone know of others that are really good and not remakes of the famed 'Ikea Hamper' ? The article I'm writing is about jewelry / luxury good photos. Thanks!
