  1. the biometar will smoke the helios40 for image quality wide open on full frame, but will not show as much of that lovely swirl effect we know and love of the helios40. if you look at the aperture measurements vs the optical surface measurements of the helios 44, helios 40 and similar full frame lenses you'll see the optics don't quite accommodate for the aperture size and from my basic but informed understanding it is this attribute which is delivering the strange and wonderful swirling. the biometar will show these nice things but only when used on a 6x6 format where the lens is pushed to within a micro of its capabilities.
  2. On the topic of medium format lenses... I actually think they are better on full frame than lenses designed for full frame. particularly wide open due to the fact that vignetting wide open is cropped away - if you take measurement of a helios 44 wide open on full frame the vignette at the corners is over 1.5 stops. There is CA and softness, but these are what make the lens look so lovely due to the aberrations being of the pleasing type. With medium format lenses, you lose a lot of the lovely edge nasties that make the helios 44 so lush. a Vega12b (90mm f2.8) is awesome on full frame since it is literally a scaled up helios 44. however the creamy portion of the lens is not used due to the 1.5x crop and the image lacks those traits we all love of the helios 44.
  3. It's awesome and also confusing. I assume the 1.1x crop is relating to the 16:9 mode so the sensor will remain 36mm wide I'd hope My heart sank when I saw X-AVC-s rather than XAVC. Sony's codec choice puts this in consumer territory, when the 12mpx sensor suggests a degree of careful thinking by the designers. Again, Sony techs making a deadly machine then crippling the camera at the software stage in order to prevent it harming their pro division:( That said, I have always found AVCHD had a lot harder time than it deserved and as the FS100 and FS700 have shown, the 24mbs at 24p mode creates incredible things for such a small file size. I'm pretty sure the 4k xavc-s (if it is shabby) will benefit from a downscale to very crisp FullHD. Damn, if I hadn't had a taste of how awesome a 36mpx full frame sensor is for stills I'd be jumping on this regardless. Alas, I love the A7R too much to part with the 36mpx stills
  4. You're ignorant of the processes and time each DSO lens takes to renovate / modify. If you want an argument please stay on topic. I very rarely bring up my company here, and certainly don't use this place as a salesroom. - Your selling practices are not good for the forum. And your listings tire me and others when they show up in saved searches related to your tagging of brands and buzzwords unrelated to the goods in the listing.
  5. So this is the private message I had. WOW:- "I will kindly suggest you that the next time you'll open you mouth about me, you should me more careful/polite/gentle. The reason is obvious: You put your nose in things that are out of your business, while your sayings are results of your "supposes" and negativity. About my product: This is the final version of the Slr Magic, officially purchased & in full warranty period. Did I ever mentioned anything about the bullshits that you make? No. Did I ever said that you are a thief with the prices you're selling. NO. NEVER. Even that I don't like them, I never appeared in your fucking topics. So, and my word is final: stay out of my business (especially if they are clean & clear!) so I'll do the same. Gege? I hope yes... If not, be ready (as a start) to troll all your products in every site/forum/topic." Lesson 1. Primary use of a forum to sell sell sell is not productive for a community - I just looed at your post history and over 50% is selling! I came onto your topic because I felt your selling practice on this listing is not ethical and disruptive to the community on the whole. I find your listing to be unfair and on the whole something that appears to be taking advantage of those who are not aware of the importance of having the diopters as part of the setup. Lesson 2. Your personal threats about trolling my own work is pretty sad. As an open community I felt it necessary to bring up some of my assumptions since it is clear some of them are true. Lesson 3. Don't take it as a personal vendetta against you. I'm not trying to damage your reputation. But I have to say you deserved a bit of stick for your use of Iscorama, Bolex and LA7200 tag words in your title if nothing else. BAD PRACTICE. Lesson 4. Use of sexual swearwords in private messages is pretty low. Please avoid this in the future. So bring on your trolling if it makes you feel good. No skin off my nose. - I let me stuff speak for itself and this tends to deter bad mouths.
  6. Bit cheeky if you ask me. Grab the early adopters kit, take away the two most important components of the setup (the diopters), add a huge markup, stir it up and you have a fine anamorphic mess. It's like a new female driver buying a car with no windshield ready for when they pass their test from a rip off merchant who takes advantage of the fact that the new driver hasn't experience with the importance of a windshield. - she can drive it when practicing her 3 point turns and reversing into a bay, but when she actually gets out on most roads it's hopeless due to the fact that wind and insects are bombarding her eyes, then the young driver ends up crashing and killing 30-40 people in a high speed collision. Anyone 'needing' this adaptor quickly will also 'need' the diopters to make it usable for their last minute job. I imagine people would be less harsh if you hadn't listed with such blatant disregard for honesty:- 1. You use the term 'bolex, Iscorama and LA7200' in your title. This is no any of these and certainly shouldn't have the term iscorama mentioned anywhere near this listing. 2. BRAND NEW!!! - This is a lie. It is not brand new. you are not a reseller for SLR Magic. You bought this as an early adopters item and thus, the final product might well be different - and likely improved! 3. as above - you don't mention this is a pre production model and as such is not backed up by a warranty as the production model will be. Even it if were, as a second owner the warranty is null and void.
  7. awesome news. I would like a nice aps-c camera to replace the nex5n and partner to the A7R
  8. I think the Ultra Panavision format gets away with the lower compression ratio because it's designed to still deliver something like 3:1 ratio (from the original 2.2:1 65mm frame), and even at f11 the in and out of focus separation is incredible due to the fact that a normal lens for that format is 80mm. Crop 65mm film to 2.35:1 and it looks almost anamorphic - I've only been able to do this on medium format and 6x9 still photos, but the concept works. it may not be bokeh distortion but its the combination of wide while still being shallow if you want it to be. When we talk normal sensors such as the modern s35 / aps-c and smaller they require a lot wider lens to obtain the same fov, and thus the in and out of focus separation is less pronounced and so is the bokeh distortion. I imagine if the slr magic can deliver good results on full frame, wide open on a 50mm f1.4 and a 85mm f2 the bokeh will be more visible. But I am yet to see footage shot on the slr magic where it's pushed hard in this way. I still believe from the footage i have seen, it's more the lack of elements in the slr magic design than the actual smaller squeeze ratio.
  9. beautiful. I think I fell in love with your model a couple of times throughout the 2.5mins. rather than a test showing the camera image quality (we all know what great 1080p/2k and dr from cameras shooting more than 8bit h264 looks like), the piece actually highlights how use of lenses designed for the image plane they're being used on create their own amazing look. those 16mm lenses do marvellous things to the image. No other camera / lens combination would have allowed this piece to look the way it does. - the horrific black magic pocket may have been cleaner, but the shutter skew and stupid form factor would have hindered just about every creative decision you made that day. I can't afford one of these at the moment but will be sure to keep an eye out for one when they come down a bit in price.
  10. Detailed yes. Low shadow noise yes. Digital looking..... Yes Yes Yes! It's all for nothing if it looks digital IMO
  11. good topic. but one that will probably not yield much interest here since its quite a deep subject. I think your sentence "What methods do you use when coming up with ideas for your craft?" is a superb highlight of the current phenomenon of lots of individuals who consider themselves as 'creatives' when really they are not so. I think a better sentence would be:- "What methods do you use when realising / putting in motion and ultimately seeing through your ideas?" It shouldn't need method to think creatively in my opinion. It's something you either are or are not. A true creative head is always seeing creative opportunity and if anything the main holdback is the delivery of these ideas into a completed physical object or creation. The really successful ones are the guys who see their strengths and weaknesses and seem to naturally surround themselves with like minded collaborators. Online forums are a great source of information, but unfortunately are very unhelpful at driving a personal project forward since they give a false sense of being around like minded people when 90% of the time they are the other side of the world. It's a lot harder to go out and join a theatre club and meet real people, but i imagine this method will ultimately bring more productivity. For me, I only ever undertake things i feel are worthy of my time. I try to block out what others are doing, while maintaining an awareness of my surroundings, selectively picking and choosing the finest creative output from others and allowing it to influence me subconsciously.
  12. Buy from hdvideoshop and your're paying for a European supplier, they will have taken care of import duty so you don't have to. buy from China and if you get hit with import duty you'll be hit a lot harder. This is assuming Slovakian import duty is as much of a criminal offense as here in the UK! - add 25% or more from anything out of the EU it seems here
  13. i am often concerned by how warm the pocket gets. in order for this type of heat to be generated so quickly I imagine the battery is being drawn at much too high output currents - way more than the nikon cameras the batteries are running from. I find this video ridiculous though. 1. I doubt any flames were present. 2. would you not think to remove the ssd and the lens? 3. what type of wimp runs out before ensuring the fire is extinguished? I'd have carried the camera out of the building at arms length via the tripod. 4. looks to me like a lame attempt to get more hits on their crappy kickstarter project.
  14. Less than that from an iscorama 36. this will be measured, but it's expected to be less than 1/3rd of a stop. The glass surfaces are designed to accommodate more light transfer than a f2 aperture requires. the only loss will be from optic reflections, but being modern multi coated this wont be much. One of the main criteria in the brief is for the sections to deliver similar optical degradation to what you would expect from a rama 36. - which even on full frame, the degradations are almost nil
  15. it's a bit cloak and daggers at the moment, but they are completely new designs I've been working on with a well known optical wizard. the 38mm front is slightly stronger than .7x and the 25 is slightly stronger than .45x. it was the only option since no existing product like this exists for the full frame format. Manufacturing is happening as we speak. assembly will be undertaken here in the UK. Schott glass. Uk metalwork, proper job:)
  16. I have to say, I took your advice on these - trying numerous different types. I found none can quite deliver on full frame. - even the huge multi element ones. what sensor are you using these on?
  17. Main things that make the Helios 44 so good:- Double Gauss design dates back from the 1930's when computers were not used in the design process Front optic / aperture size are slightly mismatched - the optic should be slightly bigger than it is - resulting in quite heavy vignetteing when used wide open on full frame. the barrel distortion / swirly bokeh is so obvious on full frame sensors and can be traced back to this attribute since if the optic were wider then less of the lower quality edges of the optic would be used. the helios 40 looks like a oversized helios 44. planar design, front optic unable to accommodate the huge f1.5 aperture without using the whole front surface of the optic. the only way to obtain this beautiful look is to use a planar / double gauss design. Wides are all boring, hence why after lots of time and effort looking for a nice wide lens, its become apparent a high spec wide angle adaptor is the only way to go.
  18. I'm currently developing a pair of front mounted wide angle adaptors for use on the FF58 lens (which Is a renovated helios 44). the first is a 38mm attachment (4 elements) the second is a 25mm attachment (6 elements) both are looking like they will be significantly more costly than a helios 44 due to the fact that the optical complexity and that the glass types are about as exotic as they can get. They are designed to impart as little image degradation to the helios and instead simply widen the fov, maintaining the optical character of the helios44. dont expect edge softness, ca or other nasties from these optics! when released I will also introduce a 'Classic58' version of the Flare Factory 58, which will simply be a renovated helios 44 with uprated mechanical parts and a fresh external finish. There are simply no wide options that match the helios44 / biotar look unless you go with the old OCT18 lomo lenses - of which none can be used on a standard ef mount, or with speed boosters. they're only adaptable to PL mount
  19. http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/RARE-Kowa-8Z-16H-Anamorphic-Adapter-Lens-Serial-Number-42173-With-Box-/321348153967?pt=UK_Photography_CameraLenses_Lens_caps_hoods_adaptors_ET&hash=item4ad1d7b26f sad example. 6 months ago it would attract £500-600 bids. now, I bet it goes for less than £300. maybe as low as £250.
  20. or.. have all the leaches moved on? -leaving us hardcores soaking up the real anamorphic goodness? That sweet and tasty anamorphic goodness.... I'm seeing a lot of bargains and unsold anamorphics on ebay that no less than 6 months ago would have been seeing a lot more interest. Bolex Moller by a shed load Iscomorphot as above Century anamorphics?? - Seen one for $250 bin recently La7200 anamorphics - as above 8z, sankors, etc etc etc are all the users loosing interest, or just moving onto the SLR magic and Letus things? Who else is looking forward to finding some bargains once again?? :)
  21. both are the same. T* coatings. I believe the letter refers to the manufacturing plant? one is licenced Japanese made, one is german, made by zeiss themselves.
  22. re. zeiss glass... I tend to find the nicest variety for film making are the early Rollei types. made in West Germany by zeiss themselves in the peak of human/hands on manufacturing, where skilled German engineers were assembling for the premium photographic market the Rollei Zeisses were targeted at. The key with these lenses is that there are HFT versions (multi coated) and single coated versions. The HFT's perform in the same way as Zeisses own T* coatings as found on the Contax's. The single coated ones (without HFT on them) have the same sharpness, but their contrast is slightly less meaning they're smoother and don't impact as punchy look to the image, while still maintaining the sharpness. attributes like this really help in smoothing out the slightly ragged, clinical and harsh digital look we're used to seeing from anything less than an Alexa. A zingy contrasty lens like the contax zeiss is lush in photographic terms but to me is often a little too clinical and doesnt help matters if a non digital look is desired
  23. On paper,.. for a gh4 in non 4k mode you'll need a 25mm at f1.4 (approx) to match the depth of field / field of view equivalent to what you're seeing on your 50mm at f2.8 on full frame. in gh4 in 4k mode you'll need a approximately an18mm f0.95 to get an equivalent of what you're used to seeing from a 50mm f2.8 on full frame. And thus, the m4/3 system becomes less and less appealing from the viewpoint of someone used to the full frame look. the 'equivalent' we all use as comparisons is also a very loose term very few people consider properly. for example, a fast wide lens on a small sensor will never resolve the same in/out of focus information in the same way as a longer lens on a bigger sensor, despite showing the same field of view and ratio between focused subject and maximum defocused subject. The dof will be a lot less forced on the bigger sensor, and to me I find this a more attractive aesthetic. This aesthetic tends to be cherished more by still photographers, hence the natural progression from 35mm film was to move to medium format or bigger. It's harder to demonstrate the intricate differences, but it becomes even more apparent when you look at large format photography and their use of a 250mm lens for a 'normal' focal length and you see just how much control of in and out of focus subjects the photographer has at their fingertips. and that '3D pop' you get. The rolloff is completely different.
  24. the guy you're filming is a madman. i had sweaty palms watching it. i'd love the guts to do that.
