Sony A7 and A7r promise improved full frame video
richg101 replied to Andrew Reid's topic in Cameras
No disrespect intended to the guys who shot the tests with the cameras. It was nice to see a rather thorough preview of the cameras. But being fs700 users and hankering for the s-log as you say in the video, I'd have liked to have seen the picture profile tweeked a little to help with the very contrasty scene, and the very contrasty lens. It's very hard to determine whats going on with dslr footage until the crushing contrast is toned down and we're given the ability to see whats going on properly. things like noisy shadows vs properly exposed (not blown) highlights show up a lot more when the contrast is dialled down. in that light the native lenses being used seem to be causing the horrible digital looks. I certainly see a distinct difference between the a7r and a7 in video terms. not sure which looks best due to the horrible youtube compression. @ Jordan Drake. Please can you upload a few of the MTS files from both the a7 and a7r? even if the video is terrible.. i'll be happy with the A7r's rather lovely image:- http://www.sony.jp/ichigan/pre_include/images/ILCE-7R/photo-sample_a7R_03.jpg -
A look at the new video features of the new Sony A7, A7R and RX10

no crop on legacy lenses. I imagine some of the contax zeisses will outperform the new plastic crap zeiss now make. adaptors are avialbable for every lens mount there is:) finally my distagon 25mm f2.8 will be given a proper test. -
A look at the new video features of the new Sony A7, A7R and RX10

my credit card just got ruined... sod the worry of avchd. I was holding out on it being better, but tbh, i'll live with it in favour of the nice evf (i dont like modern af lenses), the e-mount, and the 36mpx images. I'd planned a 5d3 purchase since the ml progress but have lived with my beloved 3yr old nex5n and never really been worried about its shortcomings video wise. The fact that i'd need new fast media for ml raw and to invest in more batteries for the canon rather than using my existing sandisk sd's and my six genuine sony nex batteries made the a7r a winner. I have hopes that their new processing, clear effort to offer decent video functions such as manual audio, and monitoring will be partnered with some decent video performance, better than previous ff nex's and rx's and hopefully at least on a par with the nex5n I currently use. if the hdmi feed is good, i'm happy to find a preowned extyernal recorder for times where 4;2;2 and 10bit are required. -
Sony A7 and A7r promise improved full frame video

if they give us decent downsampling, and xavc10bit 4;2;2 then it's game over for everything else. evf, full frame, compact, adaptable to any lens, etc... This is the camera that I anticipated, and the reason I have slowly been building a collection of hasselblad lenses - for the time when a focal reducer arrives and gives me medium format look, 36mpx and costs a lot less than a digital back. -
Lazy old Redstan hasn't bothered making an adaptor for this lens so I was wondering if brown packaging tape will support it?
-
I think all mention of gold or red anamorphic lenses should be banned here. And ebay should ban the selling of them. Lets make it a forum rule that we all report every non iscorama lens listed with iscorama in the title.
-
I had a great service from Redstan. a great little cottage industry type affair. I imagine it was you being a difficult, uptight, impatient customer rather than he provided bad service...

Fake Iscoramas at inflated prices:- http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Nikon-Isco-Gottingen-Iscorama-Anamorphic-Lens-Made-In-Germany-Rare-/331037712995?pt=Camera_Lenses&hash=item4d1362a263 The good news is that kowa also make iscoramas now! http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Kowa-Bell-and-Howell-Anamorphic-Lens-2x-Iscorama-Prominar-w-original-paperwork-/221293099436?pt=Camera_Lenses&hash=item338618b9ac And this one looks interesting.. http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Century-Anamorphic-Widescreen-lens-58mm-1-33x-Iscorama-LA7200-KOWA-2-39-1-16-9-/181231565919?pt=Obiettivi&hash=item2a323e3c5f Looks like it must have been a joint product from kowa, isco, panasonic and century? And finally a dual focus version of the iscorama... http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Bolex-Moller-Anamorphot-8-19-1-5x-Anamorphic-lens-Baby-Iscorama-Kowa-DSLR-ready-/221292411408?pt=UK_Lenses_Filters_Lenses&hash=item33860e3a10

Exclusive: SLR Magic ANAMORPHOT 1,33X 50 pricing announced
richg101 replied to Andrew Reid's topic in Cameras
I'd say Andrews coverage of the project on his very popular blog, as well as his test shoot and his hard work in creating a space where SLR magic can gain opinions from us nerds is worth a lot more than the £1300 any old mug can pay to get one of these lenses. He could be whoring himself out to Canon, Sony, etc etc and getting paid backhanders to give good reviews, posting pictures of himself using said gear for financial gain etc. I don't see Andrew doing a hard sell, but is just making a point that the price seems fair. Even if he were doing the hard sell, it wouldn't be half as bad as some of the blatant sellers on here of those huge and useless projection lenses coming on and cluttering up the place!. -
Exclusive: SLR Magic ANAMORPHOT 1,33X 50 pricing announced
richg101 replied to Andrew Reid's topic in Cameras
My money is on the lens being a 3 element - from what Andrew said just a bit up. And the fact that they have a close focus setting - which will work by bringing the two front optics back and fourth from the rear element. Also the fact that this thing is happy at different focal lengths also suggests the 3 element design since the 2 element designs have their sweet spot for focal lengths (they work better on wider lenses and dont really work well with tele's). This, if correct will be very good news for the guys used to the normal 2 element la7200 and century designs who are hoping to upgrade. And at the proposed price this could be great value for money Though a 1.33x squeeze, the addition of a 3rd optic will boost the ovals quite drasitcally over the ovals acheived from 2 element designs. I dont know why, but it just does. And I know that the 3 element design is sharp down to as big aperture as you can show it. f2 aint a problem on full frame. @Andrew. Please can you get confirmation from SLR Magic on if this is a 2 or 3 element design because this is a deal breaker IMO. - if its the 3 element design, with the choice of single coating, DSO will start researching into a nice fast taking lens for dirty looks and boosted ovals on this thing:) -
Don't touch it with a barge pole. This is the type that wont be sharp. The best types are the gold projection lenses.
-
the selectable aa filter is done by wobbling the sensor (using the sensor stabilisation movement).

I have a 3 element, focusable century 1.33x here on my desk. if it is indeed based in any way on this type of design they're onto a winner. Please please please give me some samples on aps-c or full frame at f2 and f2.8 in daylight with an ND. This will truly give an accurate idea of what we can expect with minimal and/or battery powered lighting setups. re. the 77mm diopter set... This sounds like a great set. I'd buy the pair straight away. - since the tokina +0.4 being only 72mm vignettes ever so slightly on iscorama and 35mm taking lens. -
both flares are created by the anamorphot. the green flare is a secondary flare from further inside the anamorphot. nothing to do with the taking lens.
-
35mm is the widest possible on sony/nikon sized aps-c sensors-its a whisker away from vignette. 25mm is going to be on the cusp of touching vignette on m4/3. you'll need to be able to mount your iscorama so the optics are nearly touching, but you should get there by my calculations. the good resolution of the gh2 should mean you can always crop in slightly without a terrible loss of perceived detail.
-
can you flip the image upside down on the bm pocket to allow 2 sensors to be placed closer together for side by side 3d rigging? tried google but no info it seems
-
I'd suggest any decent 35mm f2.8 with the intention of using a speed booster. The older rollei/zeiss Distagon 35mm's are a nice match for the iscorama 36 on aps-c, so should give the same fov and lack of vignetting when on the m4/3 sensor and a speed booster. otherwise without a speed booster the incredible 25mm distagon is a good call. Sorry, didnt read your post properly.. maybe try the olympus 28mm f2? its not the sharpest at f2, but its not all about sharpness is it:)

nice topic. i'm of the belief that if only Sony released their upcoming full frame nex with the following:- Xavc 10bit 4;2;2 recording to card (similar quality/data rate as used on the bmpcc) pixel binning as has been used on 5dmk3 for clean 1080p or better these simple additions, even if it cost £1000 more for the model with these features it would still be the go-to for still/motion picture dslr style camera. I'd love a 5dmk3, but the lack of oled evf is now a real turn off as a user of manual focus lenses for still photography and I am holding fire on a 5dmk3 purchase in the hope that Sony pull something out of the bag... the a 1DC with decent codec, features like sony added to their A99 (which has a great feature set, but a lacking video quality) and at a reasonable price of <£4000.

I'd imagine a lot of your orders will come from people wanting to turn the new offerings into something usable:) And from my limited experience from using my tokina +.4 (which you kindly supplied to me around 2 years ago) on a century, I think your new optic could be the answer to getting nice results from these modern cousins of the century and 7200, while still maintaining a full focus range on wider lenses at least. what is the theoretical lowest dioptre setting you can achieve with a doublet design? And assuming you could create a +.1 diopter, would the beneficial effects of it being a doublet be reduced compared to a higher diopter setting?

thanks for all the kind feedback guys:) and thanks in particular for the comments about the off axis flaring looking like a turned on its side ccd flare line. this is mainly due to the flares being a little too strong at present. once toned down these flares wont be activated until a more direct beam is fired into the lens. Also, its great to see people seeing the full frame options - with raw on the 5dmk3 and the very nice in camera h264 from the d800, as well as the speed booster on the fs100/700, and black magic s35, the full frame sensor area certainly helps for getting wider fov and more obvious oval bokeh. This is a slightly modified, yet still a little over responsive module, and the last shot is a ff58 q1.5 with iscorama36. as you can see, this module and oval apertures wont ever compare to a true anamorphic and nice taking lens, but since TRUMP isnt just for anamorphic, and even with the flare module is still less than half the price of an iscorama on its own, its certainly something I can see myself using when the added finesse from an irreplaceable iscorama isnt required:- http://vimeo.com/75365369

nice work man. So I assume the +.25 is to allow infinity when used on the new range of century/la7200 copies? I remember on certain taking lenses the tokina +0.4 would allow the full focus throw of 2ft- infinity on the century.
-
This was our thinking. Since the 5dmk3 got raw, and a really dependable 2.35 crop mode (using the full sensor width, and with numerous tele/sensor crop modes), in s35 fov terms the 58mm becomes these: full sensor: 38mm aps-c crop: 58mm s16mm crop: 120mm? the 35mm prototype we've been working on looks great on full frame. ovals are very obvious (more so than we expected from a 35mm). And speed booster on nex (and soon m43) is a real step up the ladder for this type of solution since they rectify the 1 stop slower aperture for ovals, and give the width gain you'd see from sticking an iscorama on the front. while not introducing any vignetting on wide lenses. @ Rob. I'll be taking your TRUMP out for a spin tonight to check everything is in order and will do some side by sides with and without the streak filter. Sorry for the delay on it. I've had to do a bit of shimming on the infinity to get both the nikon and PL mounts working their best.
