1. I like the colours on the 1D a bit more. looks like a completely different profile. i'd like to see this test with a softer more warm lens like an old schneider curtagon or xenon.
2.
This is a forum for anamorphic shooting. Post this in the main forum and you will get more feedback.
all APS-c canons seem the same. 650D is best option because it outputs a full 1080 from HDMI for external monitor. 550d is 480p so you dont benefit from monitors bigger than the standard screen. Additional price of 7d is a waste for video use.
3. personally I like to set my project up with a frame size of 1080 tall, and with the width stretched from 1920 to whatever my final unsqueezed image will be. So for a 1.33x squeeze anamorphic lens I multiply my 1920pixel width by 1.33 and end up with around 2553pixels. granted you cannot export a h264 compressed file bigger than 2000px wide, but you can export uncompressed Mov's at full 1080x2553px if you have the means to play it back. exporting at 1920x1080p means you end up with black bars at the top and bottom meaning your added pixels are resized down to fit the smaller export frame meaning your height is divided by 1.33 (800px or so) but this is quite nice because it ends up sharper than your preview window. Importing the footage into premiere I then right click each clip in the preview window and chose modify. you can then apply a stretch to the clip before importing it into your timeline - freeing up processor power because the footage is not not having to be stretched in realtime. 4:3 will be better than 16:9 with the 2x anamorphic adaptor. - as long as it uses most of the sensor and doesnt crop. the 2x de squeeze will then be closer to 2.40:1 than if you used 16:9 sensor mode. Even in 4:3 mode I would probably crop away a little of your edges to get the footage less wide. 2x on a 16:9 sensor is silly wide, and even on 4:3 it looks too wide for me. Dont get too concerned about loosing visual information on the sides - your GH2 is very detailed so will not suffer as much as if it were to be done on a lesser camera:)
4.
I tried them, build my own, designed and redesigned them myself and ended up finding such rigs way too large. They remove the biggest advantage of a micro4/3...size+weight. If you use a rig, it should be foldable, lightweight and pulled out of the camera bag and set up within seconds. Having some more sturdy mounting options then just 1/4" at the bottom, hotshoe at the top and maybe the filter-threads of the lens would allow for more lightweight rigs. Integrate a cage into the body. (BTW, taking appart and reassembling a GH2 is no magical process. It's just a computer like any other one.) Examples of where the GH2 has it's unique selling points: Bringing 3 bodies and 6 lenses to a short-notice or improvised interview shot in a small backpack with enough space for sound, power and light. Having a body constantly in your pocket with a pancake lens where otherwise you would miss some perfect B-roll or compositing material because your heavy DSLR-body or upper class camcorder is in the hotel room/car/bottom of the backpack/whatever. Switching bodies instead of lenses and thus be faster and more versatile then a full frame shooter. Just mounting a body with a wide angle on top of a body with a tele and cut between them in editing because both are so light and small that it's no big deal.
you nailed it in one. My little housing for the nex 5n is specifically designed to remain handheld in the same way a DSLR can be carried around all day ready to get that money shot no one is prepared for. With the screen folded down, it takes up less space than a popular walk around combo of 5D and 28-70 f2.8L lens so can be packed into a backpack in its entirety during heavy rain. Being a case structure instead of a frame, the ABS structural integrity is similar to aluminium. There is no flex. It is a rigid as if I were to have the case machined in aluminium. However the case, fan system, clm-v55 screen and hand strap adds only a small amount of weight to the overall rig. Id say with a little 50mm prime on the front it weighs in only slightly more than a canon 5d with the same lens. With the Anamorphic lens on there, 4x4 Mattebox, ND's etc it is a little hefty but still manageable for a days work. That tech noir rig looks lovely, it looks pretty big for taking anywhere other than a film shoot though. You would need a rather large flight case to hold that lot set up and ready to shoot with. I am amazed at the price for it though. Someone has done well to get it priced so reasonably. Seems an awful lot of machined aluminium for the small amount of money! I really like the machining work. I cant find any info about Tech Noir online. Anyone got a web address for them?
5.
This is my test. 600D vs GH2 Be sure to download the original.
the difference is quite amazing. it looks like the pixels on the gh2 are 1/3 the size of those on the 600d. and to make it worse the 600d footage looks like someone took the footage and has applied a 0.5 pixel gaussian blur amking each pixel bleed into one another.
6.
RX100 casing would be cool, especially if you came up with some sort of anamorphic solution.
BOOM! :) I'm waiting to see what results Mister Reid yields with his tests. I imagine he will achieve good things.
7. Cheers for the feedback guys. Though the gh2 is more detailed, I think people have a misconception the NEX 5N doesn't produce good enough pictures. I see Canon 7d users with over £1500 worth of big and heavy rig on top of their camera investment, making it into a video cam, and the actual image is not as good as the NEX 5N imo. The 50p/60p full hd is also a really good feature which no other brand offers in this price point. I would like to maybe create a GH3 housing, but i think there may not be enough benefits to it - The GH2 has a good footprint, doesnt overheat and doesnt really need any improvements that aren't already offered at very affordable price points - I imagine the GH3 will be even better. I saw a concept drawing of a machined aluminium case for the GH2 on another forum. It did look good on a visual level. If anything I'd love to get hold of a RX-100 to work with next. I was amazed by Andrews review video. - I recon it would be fine projected on a cinema screen.
8. is the centre of the image significantly better than the edges? just how soft is it? is there much CA at the edges?
9. it is a 1.33x squeeze. original model of this was designed for 4:3 to 16:9 conversion. on a 16:9 sensor you'll get around 2.35:1. just use the modify footage to 1.33 anamorphic on your software.
10. Some of the shots are simple beautiful. The horrid old lady for example. Very Babel in its appearance. And the coloring is also superb.
11. Hi Guys. All pm's noted, as are personal emails sent to me. Sorry for lack of responses to some of you guys. If I haven't replied it is due to not having the exact answer for you at the moment. This isn't my main job so I am balancing this with full time work and my small amount of free time. Rest assured I will be soon releasing a small PDF info sheet which should fill in any gaps. Your questions are helping me to form a good comprehensive piece of text explaining the system. Pricing is coming in very close to the original estimate published on EOSHD's original topic. There will be a 'full rig' option, 'full rig with PL mount' option and 'housing only' option. Users or future users of the Metabones EF adaptor will be catered for with an optional modification during manufacture. Bear with me:) Rich
12.
You should look up the dictionary, too, because you were wrong in my opinion. I am entitled to my opinion.
Weird. Why so venom? I said nothing that can be considered either right, nor wrong. -Just a personal opinion. Wind your neck in man.
13.
You couldn't be more wrong.
Wrong in your eyes maybe. Subjectivity.. Maybe look it up in the dictionary some time.
14. if you go slower than your frame rate ie slower shutter than 1/25th sec while shooting 25p you get a jolty non smooth look. why is it that if i set to 50p and shoot at 1/25th sec (on paper roughly the same as shooting 1/10th sec at 25p) I dont get the jittery look?
15. nice. I forgot which I originally blindly thought were best during part 1. Unfortunately (but rightly so) it turns out I thought the Alexa and the Epic were best. After watching part 2 and seeing the GH2 is B, I am amazed how superbly detailed it is, if a little over lit to unrealistic degree - to counter the lower of DR but WOW. F65 missed it for me - sony's lack of interest in being creative with the lighting was a shame. It handled it but i'd have liked to have seen it used to its optimum
16.
Samples of aerial video shot with a gyro stabilized camera rig. Utilizing only 2 Kenyon KS-8 gyros. Camera USA videos: 5D MkII w/24-70 f/2.8L & 24-105 f/4 lenses. Camera Dubai videos: 7D www.igomount.com
yuck! is that 16:9 I see? where's the morph?
17.
Quickly tried it with my Iscorama 36 and it works well. Set MF to infinity, focus with the anamorphic. I'll try it with LA7200 later. I had that mounted on the HX9v just fine. But the MF ring on the RX100 stops me from doing the same trick here. You'd need something that holds the anamorphic on set of rails and for the RX100 to sit on a quick release plate. Certainly doable, I will continue to explore...
Looking forward to seeing it!
18. such a shame they went with a less handheld friendly design. and non articulated screen. The bull horns don't look like they will offer much in the way of comfortable handling with a 2kg lump hanging off them -meaning a waist level shooting style will probably be most comfortable with handheld shots, but without articulated screen this doesn't seem like a viable option either. The fs100 and c300 are brilliant form factors imo. I think its a shame BM didn't use a similar style -offering both handheld and tripod friendly options.
19. Based on the size of the sensor i recon this little cam could be a really good anamorphic camera. From what I have seen the best anamorphic dslr results have been from the GH2 - the smaller sensor seems to take better to the anamorphic adaptors like la7200, optex, century, soligor, generic. an even smaller sensor will bring the system even closer to the optimum where they used to use small sensor 4:3 3chip cameras with the anamorphic adaptors to create 16:9 before everything went over to 16:9. Andrew... Please Please Please try this out!:)
20.
I've been using my NEX 7 a lot on documentary jobs (the 5D MK III stays in the bag) and was thinking of adding something like a Canon HF G10 to my other kit. Your comments comparing this to camcorders were of particular interest... A few questions: is it really possible to use a Zacuto finder? Presumably if you use the adhesive frames they have to stick on the screen itself. Would you be able to see all of the screen and display through the Z-Finder? How quickly does the maximum aperture drop from 1.8 when you zoom in? What does it become at, say, a 35mm EFOV? What about sound? I don't expect miracles but I imagine that a low-end camcorder would win out there. There's no microphone input, right? Does the peaking work better than on the Sony NEX 7 (which I find pretty hit or miss in low-light, low-contrast situations)? I also find the central square AF zone on the NEX 7 to be too large for accurate focus at wide apertures. Is the RX100 any better? I generally end up zooming in to focus manually but that's not an option with the RX100... What happens in bright light? I don't think there's a built-in ND filter and you can't put a vari-ND onto the lens. Presumably you just have to drop the ISO, then stop down the lens, and, if that's not enough, raise the shutter speed with the risk of jerky motion. And thanks for the review!
10mm f1.8 is equiv to around 27mmf1.8 according to the 2.7 crop?. considering it costs £1000 for f1.8 at 24mm for the nex range zeiss glass and the video quality is more detailed here this is a winner. the tiny front end means smaller high quality nd's can be used if needs be.
21. that is indeed a lovely looking picture. amazing it outperforms the nex7 detail in video mode. thanks for the detailed review:)
22.
how long does the fan battery last?
12hrs on a full charge. 30 mins charging time.
23. just an update. I have arranged for a first batch of 10 units to be made within the next few weeks - final mods being done. i'll set up an ebay listing where people can buy the enclosure. all info will be listed. The user can then source the nex 5n and the clm v55 screen themselves to avoid import taxes etc. everything required other than the nex5n and the clm-v55 screen will be included with the order. so you will get the ABS moulded enclosure, fan system `+ battery, charger for fan battery, strap, hdmi cable, hdmi+usb adaptor, heatsink, flip up nex5n screen protector, instructions for assembly - 5-10 mins time to assemble/dissemble.
24. Here is 4 mins of footage that will be used to form a little promo video for a local festival. I shot in anamorphic because I thought it would work well with the theme. Edited on a mac - and it really has crushed those blacks and whites on export - looks more contrasty than in the premiere preview window. Some of the shots are beautifully sharp considering the anamorphic was a century 16:9 converter. the tokina helped a lot. other shots i miss focused slightly and it shows. I'm kind of glad this didnt turn into another blue flare bonanza. the lighting didnt cause too many flares so its more the organic feel the footage has that gives it the look i love so much about anamorphic. It's weird that some shots have bad edge aberrations and others dont. i am still to try a narrower lens to see if this helps. this was a 28mm, I want to test a 35mm to get the middle ground not quite as narrow as a fifty mil. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Oty-WnEpuFA&feature=youtu.be - slam it to 1080p any feedback on the shots that should be binned please let me know!
25.
Another question Richard. I plan to buy a Metabones EF adapter for my Nex5n. Is it possible to use both the housing AND the adapter or is it too tight to put the adapter on? Because on the pictures it seems like the space around the mount is very tiny...
Good point. The prototype seen in the pictures will not accept the metabones adaptor due to the way the casing hugs around the lens/adaptor. the current prototype has been designed more specifically for non electronic lenses. However the canon 24-70 2.8 L lens was almost enough of a reason to accomodate the slight extra diameter of the metabones adaptor. So far this has not been implemented due to lack of widespread availability of the metabones adaptor at the time the decision was made. The fact that this has been raised makes it more of a priority - and adjustments to the working prototype could be easily made the day before tooling started to progress. It wouldn't be a problem accommodating more lens/lens adaptor width. The Sony LA-EA2 on the other hand could unfortunately never be implemented in this current design due to the size. LA-EA1 will fit though.
