I'm in Australia. Everything is slow. You're server could be a zx81 and we wouldn't know ? (so you're site is fine, never noticed any probs)

Fastest ultrawide native zoom is 2.8-4 (not including the Olympus). Cost is not much different for a sppedbooster and tokina 11-16, which becomes a 7.8_11.5 f2. (Or pay a bit extra for the 11-20). Makes shooting In doors readable with available light

This seems to be common to all the gimbals. It's a big issue for what I use them for so if anyone knows one that doesn't do it I'm all ears
-
they're blummin expensive :/ I might just wait till the firmware is released and see how other folks go

OK camera bought! now, any news yet about what cards needed for the new firmware? I've got a couple of uhs1 U3 cards. Will I get away with them for 4K60?
-
excellent info thanks @jonpais and @Shirozina

thanks @jonpais. So OK, will get my head round vlog after I've had a tinker for a few weeks. So that rolling shutter: I know its supposed to be pretty good on the GH5, is it better than gx85?
-
I'm about to buy gh5. Can anyone tell me what the rolling shutter is like compared to gx85. I've found those files hard to wrap stabilse with some micro wobbles. Ends up all warpy and wobbly. Also how big a deal is vlog? Can I start with cinelike or do I need it from the get go? and what's the 1080 like? The gx85 is a bit gnarly

I'll happily admit I was wrong about the d800 too, when it came out the idea of a 36mp sensor with less noise than a 12mp (d700) was ludicrous (to me). I own it and love it. The title was because of the reasonable expectation of some basic features it should have to be interesting to this forum: filmmakers. This camera is not entirely off my wishlist, but if you were shooting 95% video I still say you'd be bonkers to have this camera on yours. And the title comes from my frustration with nikon, who have no cinema camera line to cannibalise for not pushing the envelope. High bitrate, h.265. Focus peaking in 4k, these aren't "you expect your camera to make you breakfast" things, heck even some sort of raw video should be feasible, even if in short bursts. I want to keep using nikon stuff, and I need a camera that I can shoot my stills and video with, but I'd be amazed if I bought this (especially at $5400AUD) that I wouldn't be kicking myself when the A7r3 came out: all it needs to do is have better 4k full frame than the a7r2 and it's already a better filmmakers camera.

this is much nicer, but if it was shot handheld at 50mm, where are those jerbils? (as I have unilaterally decided to call rolling shutter artefacts caused by jitters). THeres some warp stabiliser in here methinks
-
thanks @jonpais something else to consider :D I'm going to see how cheap I can find it over here... actually for years I've just found the hyperfocal distance as wide as I could go and hoped for the best. Doesn't work on FF but you can get away with it on apsc (stopping down a bit), and M4/3. But being able to pull focus on a gimbal with a smartphone say would be AWESOME. Can you do that with the a6500 and gh5 I wonder?

I just shot my first 2 projects in 4k after using nikon d5300/d5500's for years. At the moment there's more to like than dislike, but the major problem I've got is that the gx85+ speedbooster is heavier than my d5300 and my gimbal cant handle it. I was hoping the IBIS would take care of the mircro jitters but if anything it makes them worse. (Because set at 8mm - 11mmx0.71 - the edges of the frame dance). Other things: noise in shadows is not good, hard to lift. Highlight rolloff a bit nasty I dont really have M4/3 glass. was trying to hold out for nikon mirrorless or to see what sony's next round it but I need a quicker solution. I have a bunch of options (in AUD): Buy bigger gimbal: $1400 (Pilotfly H2+ 45 or Beholder DS2A for $800) Buy cam with better IBIS (?) (and low light/noise/dyanamic range) Buy much lighter wide angle (8-18?) $1400 - I presume the dual stabilisation would help with jitters too. Ultimately I'd want to be shooting full frame or aspc, so any M43 stuff is an intermin solution. Any thoughts?

there's a happy compromise though which NX1 users can tell you about For what I do 24-28MP would be more than enough for stills. Any canon still shooters here should try to borrow a d800/810/850 and shoot raw for a couple of days. I went from canon to nikon and it totally changed the way I shoot. Exposing for the highlights and not worrying too much about the shadows... knowing the deepest shadows would be a purple banded mush. If you know shoot in high dynamic range situations its no biggee.

Great summary. It's so close and yet...

well that explains the Aus price too. As the 5div is about $5100 over here (D850 $5300). But Nikon has traditionally priced its cameras very close to the US equivalent and sometimes better. So we have the weird situation where the D850 is 60% more expensive than the D810. What they may not have taken into account is this now makes the A7rmk2 more attractive @$3700. It makes this scint photographer determined to wait for the next crop of sony cameras, and maybe the nikon mirrorless offering. The D800 still produces amazing stills, and I dont need most of the D850's bells and whistles (very nice so some of them are).

Ah yes, I think your'e right.

Why are you heading from sausageville to jerksville? Can't I discuss what I like? On a forum setup for video shooters using DSLRs? I shoot a couple of times a week with these things. This stuff is damn relevant. Any time I can save using the same sodding camera to shoot decent stills and video improves my profits. Expecting a camera to not have some compromises is ridiculous I agree. But please refrain from pointless bashing of people who have reasonable expectations and a specific requirement: especially when 422 10 bit for instance already exists in a ~$2000 camera.

Heres hopin

Don't be a silly sausage. No one here would buy this camera for it's raw capabilities. (But if you had it, and could shoot raw bursts then that would be a great thing to experiment with. As it is it's probably useless, But at 10 seconds a can think of scenarios that I face with every shoot where having say 13 stops of dynamic range, and very little sacrifice for boosting the beejesus out of the shadows would be useful.)

stills; electronic shutter 6fps full frame, 14 bit. All sRAW are at 12bit. No word whether then 30fps is sRAW or jpeg. If its sRAW then the burst length is the next question. If I can shoot for 10 seconds then I can get 4K 12-bit raw video at 30fps. This would be interesting. Some bits of video in here. High iso looks OK (from what you can see from youtube). personally I am increasingly primarily a video shooter who also shoots stills, when I got the D800 it was the other way round. As Leeys said a good still camera, but thats not why we're 'ere, eh? Good info here (see #8):http://www.imaging-resource.com/PRODS/nikon-d850/nikon-d850A.HTM Looks like buffer allows 200 frames in sRAW, however this was not talking about the burst function. Could be less than that. So 5-8 seconds of raw vid a possibility. Sensor designed by nikon.

From DPreview: "Video capabilities In terms of video the D850 becomes the first Nikon DSLR to capture 4K video from the full width of its sensor. The camera can shoot at 30, 25 or 24p, at a bitrate of around 144 Mbps. Our initial impression is that the video is pixel-binned, rather than being resolved then downsampled (oversampling), but we'll be checking on this as part of the review process. This risks lowering the level of detail capture and increases the risk of moiré, though it's a better solution than line-skipping. There also seemed to be significant rolling shutter, but again these are only first impressions from a camera running non-final firmware. At 1080 resolution, the camera can shoot at up to 60p, with a slow-mo mode that can capture at 120 frames per second before outputting at either 25 or 24p. The 1080 mode also offers focus peaking and digital stabilization, neither of which are available for 4K shooting" ----- focus peaking in 1080 only. Just where you need it most, eh? $5400 stinking australian dollars (http://www.vanbar.com.au/catalogue/product.php?id=117355). Really all Sony need to do is get within half a stop of their dynamic range in stills and I'm gorn... I saw a second or so of 4k vid, in this and the 1080 slomo https://nikonrumors.com/2017/08/24/nikon-d850-product-tour-and-promo-videos.aspx/ Heres a few nuggets: The electronic shutter operates at up to 6 fps (AF/AE locked) at full resolution, while an additional mode enables 8.6-megapixel capture in DX image area mode at up to 30 fps. No word yet whether this is the 12bit raw (I doubt it). It does not look like there is a DX video option at all. (which is barmy seeing as it can record 30fps, but we'll see). Yes dx crop mode (about 8 mins in). (but still no peaking. Stupid stupid stupid)

but it doesn't display anywhere whilst shooting? pressing shutter no good to me on a gimbal!
-
The d800 was a huge stepup from d700 in image quality. Dynamic range, resolution, noise. Are we going to see that leap here? (I dont think so). I suspect I'll be waiting to see what sony do next. (Edit: I'm prepared to be wrong mind - as I was about the d800 when I first heard it was 36MP)
-
can anyone tell me if the gh5 displays the shutter speed in A mode? I just replaced my d5500 with the gx85 for a shoot and realised you cant see what the shutter speed is. Bonkers. Also not loving the highlight roll-off or dynamic range. GH5 any better?

12bit with d-lighting would still be incredible. I'll believe it when I see it though
