And even the odd troll!

Sounds like the same availability time as for NZ.

I have the CX700 and I can see they haven't updated the menu structure at all. I have to dive in and fiddle for 5 minutes if I want to change something but then it limits you to only changing one variable at a time while keeping the others on auto, ie. as soon as you change aperture to manual everything else goes to auto. It's not worth using if you also have an RX100 apart from having a zoom that pulls the moon out of the sky. Does it have a full manual mode yet and how's the RS jello on release? I think a stabilised gopro 4k would be more interesting.

Panasonic GH4 - Slow-mo at 96fps and 4K rolling shutter test
Orangenz replied to Andrew Reid's topic in Cameras
There is a drop when compared to its own GH4 footage not at 96fps but like many other postings here I would say in comparison to other 1080 cameras it actually looks amazing. Especially the closer shots (dancing into the sun, dog chewing) it's stunning. As for the other request, I suggest watching the video, and check out the recent posts on EOSHD with other tests. Perhaps I will need to wait for you to get the camera to see all the tests that you want to run. -
Panasonic GH4 - Slow-mo at 96fps and 4K rolling shutter test
Orangenz replied to Andrew Reid's topic in Cameras
GH4 1080 4.5 degrees GH3 1080 5.3 degrees GH4 4K 9.0 degrees AX100 4K 13.6 degrees (probably more because it was not perpendicular) A7S 13+ degrees Average of 5 readings per train. -
Yes I can play it on VLC but not in Vegas Pro or Premiere CC - it asks to install QT.
-
The AX100 is selling already. I had assumed the one you said you were playing with was a release model in a store. If not we need a person to provide an updated report. I don't think I'll get another handycam though. I just downloaded the 1.5G vid file from (GH4) and it really is gorgeous. The annoying thing is having to get quicktime to edit it. I've handily avoided that (and the devastation apple does to my pc) for years. I wonder if I can get the codec and nothing else.
-
Well you've confused me now.
-
Great review thanks! Sounds like: unusable 4k mode, but.. nice 1080 codec, nd filters, 1 inch sensor, nice stabilised zoom lens
-
Sort of. I think the point of the video is acting as evidence for the main point, which is Andrew Wonder's eyewitness report. If it's not an issue then it's easy for Sony to respond and dismiss it.

Panasonic GH4 firmware goes final and shipping soon?
Orangenz replied to Andrew Reid's topic in Cameras
So for someone with no existing glass, which metabones would be preferable? Nikon or Canon? -
Wow, calling our kind host a liar is somewhat insulting to pretty much everybody. Jolly internet.

Of course there is better latitude in grading a 10 bit sky than a 8 bit sky. And you're creating a 2k master to edit then having the higher quality will absolutely give better delivery results. I get the point about the 32bit float but you do indeed have the possibility of just magnifying 8bit grading problems. But the question is, as always, how does it work in practise. If process A ends up looking betting than process B then A wins. On something else. I love listening to Phillip Bloom but his comment at the end of that video bugs me. "It's not the camera it's how you use it," etc etc. That may have been the case back when the best cameras where $50k but you can get close enough to "the best" for under $2k now. "Get a good camera" is actually not a bad thing to say. I don't want to say to someone that yes there's great cameras out there but I want you to have a crap camera for 10 years so you can learn the ropes just like me. :/ That's annoying. You can learn with good equipment that doesn't cost a lot. Vegas studio, dr40, and a notable video camera is a great starting point. If you don't suggest something good they'll go for 720p mush from you-know-who. Nothing wrong with starting out with a GH4 either.

Panasonic GH4 vs Sony A7S compared - who wins the 4K battle on paper?
Orangenz replied to Andrew Reid's topic in Cameras
Love it! My students do that all the time. Trying to drive me crazy I think. -
Sony AX100 4K video camera - how much rolling shutter is too much?
Orangenz replied to Andrew Reid's topic in Cameras
There are also rules on quoting people. You broke them. If you're going to quote someone you do NOT include your own text within the quote. I think you're just a troll. Good day. -
Sony AX100 4K video camera - how much rolling shutter is too much?
Orangenz replied to Andrew Reid's topic in Cameras
"For those of us that actually own the camera -- there is no RS problem if one shoots as one should 24fps film." It's a handycam for the masses, actually. And definitely the worst rolling shutter I could imagine. And once you know it's there you can see it on pretty much any shot that has movement. But no one is saying it isn't an amazing camera in many other ways. -
Sony AX100 4K video camera - how much rolling shutter is too much?
Orangenz replied to Andrew Reid's topic in Cameras
Indeed, on 4k it becomes ultra-jello-cam. Still, absolutely stunning image if nothing is moving... The 4k played back at HD is definitely a nicer image too. -
It looks to me like there's some nice future proofing in this camera. Plus the current external recorders will, I presume, cope fine with the 1080p 10bit 4:2:2 output from the HDMI if you want to play with green screens before the 4k recorders come out. It's pretty nice that the Panasonic reps engage with the public in the online forums. Thanks to Matt Frazer there. p.s. did folks here catch up with that link to the sony ax100 video showing some rather impressive rolling shutter My only question is when will the GH4 get to NZ and if it's a world camera then why not just pre-order from the US?

Matt Frazer replied to my post on 43rumors.com with the following information: "I am the Matt Frazer from the video and yes you are correct that the YAGH is not neccessary for the output of 4K video in any flavor we offer. I would warn, however that there are real benefits to the conversion of HDMI to SDI, here are just 3. 1. Length of cable runs, Once you get a chance to output 4K over HDMI you will see that it is very unstable with runs over 6 or 7 feet. SDI gives you far greater range (hundreds of feet) 2. HDMI cables, paticularly micro HDMI, can easily come out of the camera and you can loose your recording or have a blip occur in the video. 3. Timecode, per a conversation I had with the lead electrical engineer on the YAGH project, timecode is NOT in the HDMI steam, it comes to the YAGH through 1 of the 5 new pins on the bottom of the GH4. If you need timecode in your outboard recorder, you will need the YAGH to pass it along. By no means do I think everyone will need a YAGH, in-fact many on the lower budget of video production will not be able to afford one at the launch so I wanted them to know it is a nice to have item, not a need to have. Cheers!"

I can think of a reason. Play back in slow motion on the camera LCD. Pertty cool huh?
-
I believe it is recorded at 96 in 1080 and then puts it in the wrapper of your choice. If it didnt do this then when you put it onto a timeline it would try and be a 96 fps timeline, so you would need to interpret footage every time. Anyway, if you record it into the 25p wrapper but then came edit time and you wanted it in something else I guess you could just use "interpret footage" and bobs your uncle. All the frames remain there, it just changes how quickly it plays them back.

Hands-on preview of the powerful 4K shooting Panasonic GH4!
Orangenz replied to Andrew Reid's topic in Cameras
Love the 4k add-on box dude. But you don't have to explain it. I understand what people say by reading their minds. Look, you're a bigwig talking to all these high hoi-paloi cinematographers and you're whining about GH4 or BM? This isn't for you cuz. Go for one of those $20-50k cameras that real professionals use. Chur bro.
