Contax/Yashica Zeiss with Anamorphic (Kowa 16H/8Z)?
andy lee replied to Caleb Genheimer's topic in Cameras
the Carl Zeiss 50mm Planar f1.7 in C/Y mount is a stunning lens as is the Distagon 25mm and 35mm - they are a superb set and with Speedbooster work very well -
shine a very bright LED torch though your lens from the front or back , this reveals a multitude of sins on lenses! please note if you are using a crop frame sensor APSC or Micro 4/3 and fungus at the edges of the lens this is not even on the part of the lens being used, so dont worry about it as the sensor does no 'see' it at all I have lots of cheap 'fungus; bargins off ebay that are totally usable on Micro 4/3 . Fungus will only transfer onto a camera if you leave that lens on the camera for a long time , one afternoons shooting with it will be fine dont worry !!

Contax/Yashica Zeiss with Anamorphic (Kowa 16H/8Z)?
andy lee replied to Caleb Genheimer's topic in Cameras
if you want a flare/ stylised arty match for your Kowa get a Carl Zeiss 50mm f1.8 Planar in Rollei QBM mount the 70s versions are single coated and flare like a Helios with an anamorphic .The Zeiss /Contax Yashicas are superb lenses, as you know I have been banging on about these on this forum , I like them alot , but the Rollei QBMs flare better due to this single coating (dont get the newer QBMs marked HFT as these are multicoated like Zeiss T^ have fun QBMs are great lenses very sharp but full of character and style we all like this is the older version http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Rollei-QBM-Carl-Zeiss-Planar-50mm-f-1-8-for-Rolleiflex-SL35-/321463244890?pt=UK_Lenses_Filters_Lenses&hash=item4ad8b3d85a http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Rollei-Planar-50mm-1-8-lens-for-Rollei-SL-and-DSLR-fit-/160918667287?pt=UK_Lenses_Filters_Lenses&hash=item2577800017 -
the Sigma is a superb lens I use mine alot , Im not a fan of f0.95 lenses as they all tend to be soft fully open (unusable in my book so whats the point for paying top $$) Speed boosters are very very useful I have 3 in different mounts and I now dont ever shoot wiith out them on my Panasonics

Tiffen NDs are the best at a good price , they are superb I use them all the time .(They where used on Need for Speed and Act of Valor movies by Shane Hurlbut) get ND 2, 4, 8 and 16 and stack them to get the exposure you need I never shoot outside without NDs , and I often shoot outside in bright daylight at f1.7 using Tiffen NDs I NEVER use a vari ND as they give odd results including artifacts , rainbow fringing , wierd flares etc and I just do not like what they do to your images. a vari ND is basically 2 polarizers stacked and rotated together (you can make one easily cheaply yourself this way if you so wish!) stick to normal NDs and you cant go wrong. Yes I do use NDs inside on set if Im shooting wide open and need to knock down the exposure to keep a narrow DOF. The ML series was the pro line of Multicoated lenses developed and produced by Yashica (Kyocera), to sit between their consumer grade DSB line and the state-of-the-art Zeiss T* within the Contax / Yashica system. According to 'Lens Doctor' Eddie Houston, these lenses were the 'L-series of the era' Being 35mm format lenses, they cover Full Frame (Canon 5D, 1D, 6D etc.) They perform extremely well even at wide open aperture when used on a 'crop frame' system. 180+ degree focus throw allows for accurate control - ideal for cinematography use with a Follow Focus kit. The set includes the Carl Zeiss Biometar, this is a superb legendary lens very sharp and used on Hollywood Movies as it is so good (it is a very sharp fast medium format lens) 180+ degree focus throw allows for accurate control - ideal for cinematography use with a Follow Focus kit. Included here are: these lenses are full metal casings - no cheap plastic like kit lenses. all have full metal lens hoods added - these just screw on the front and help stop lens flare - and large lens caps for the front hoods (see pics) rear lens caps are also included The set comes in a aluminium flight case PM me if you are interested I will do a reduced price for EOSHD members.

A new (and extraordinary) Sony A7S 4K low light test
andy lee replied to Andrew Reid's topic in Cameras
looks good - even more choice for 4k on the horizon -
we use the 70-200mm for all the close up head shots in pop videos , for that long lens Tony Scott look with alot of fall off in the background , its a great lens to use with the 24-105mm , we use 2 x 5D cameras so one is on each when we shoot on Canons - but Im mainly shooting on 2 xG6's now for pop videos -
-
that review is based on taking stills not cinematography - The Canon is a great work horse and Ive had over 25 pop videos on MTV shot with the Canon 24- 105 it works and does the job
-
if you are not happy just send it back for a new one - I had to return my G6 with dead pixels
-
its an enlarging lens, moded for tilt shift - like a lens baby - same type of thing, Being an enlarging lens it sould be very sharp - its an f4 lens
-

get a Panasonic G6 - superb camera if you dont need 4K
-
when you stop down to f22 you get internal reflections in the lens and ghosting of the apperture , this can look worse if there is dirt on the sensor too. I get similar spots if I stop down to f22 OR you could have dead pixels on the sensor - I had to return my first Panasonic g6 as it had dead pixels straight out the box - this was more noticeable when stopped down to f22 so zoom in on your image if the spots are square then its dead pixels if they are dark blobs its apperture ghosting at f22 - this happens even on very expansive lens SO outside use heavy NDS - I stack Tiffen NDs up to ND 24 in bright daylight so I keep a narrow DOF lens dont work at their best at f22 so avoid f22 !

Panasonic GH4 footage shot with the EOSHD Shooter's Guide Cinema Settings
andy lee replied to Andrew Reid's topic in Cameras
purely speculation here ...but has the adaptor got Image stabalisation built in - separate to the lens .....is that the big surprise Andrew is talking about? is that switch on the side to turn the stabalisation and and off ???.......just a thought could that be done ??? Mr Reed does make a point of saying in the article he is shooting hand held......no rig setup - so he was testing that side of things too
