The point I'm trying to make is you don't need to run around with a Voigtlander f0.95 lens on the front wide open all the time to make good movies on a Canon , BMCC or GH2 etc Yes fast lenses are a useful tool if used creatively.... Variety is the spice of life!! I just shot an action film , big set, and we shot anamorphic at f1.2 to get a moody look and actually tracking with actors keeping focus on their eyes in action scenes was difficult as the dof was about 2 inches ! It look alot of takes on set ! see below frame grab... you get the idea!

Lawrence of Arabia is my favourite film of all time the cinematography is amazing! all shot with off set viewfinders on a Panavision 65mm camera. Yes Roger Deakins forum is a good read on how the greats do it!! Roger is very sharing with his infomation on all aspects of film making Dont get me wrong I do like shallow dof but I just dont like it on every shot ! and once you get into f1.2 and f0.95 it gets into just a few cm in focus and you just cant shoot faces all in focus!! and its all very soft too

Intersting quote from Roger Deakins Cinematographer on James Bond 'Skyfall' from his website forum.( which is a goldmine of infomation have a look) http://www.rogerdeakins.com/forum2/index.php?sid=62d881c4b1d9407ddc8709183d62bdd1 Re: Selecting DOF on Close-Up Shots by Roger » Sat Jun 11, 2011 9:19 am I have only rarely shot a close up on a 135mm or longer and only then for a particular effect. There is no comparison between shooting one at a T2.0 on a 40mm and at 4.0 or 5.6 on a 135mm. The sense of space and relative distance of viewpoint will be different at any T stop. As for a standard stop I don't have one. I generally like to shoot a night time close up at a T2.0 and I will most often shoot a day exterior close up at around a 4.0 or a 5.6 but I could also shoot at a 11.0. Every situation and every film is different.

Could this be the perfect sensor for the Blackmagic Cinema Camera Mark II?
andy lee replied to Andrew Reid's topic in Cameras
I hope they are reading this!! -
I agree Andrew ... Most Hollywood Motion Pictures don't shoot past T3.5 or T2.8 as the dof is so shallow the actors are in and out of focus too much and the Director has to do multiple takes to get a usable pass , this takes more time and costs more money. If you read up on all the great Cinematographers they all tend to offer this opinion . I just read Cinematographer Freddie Young's Biography (he shot Lawrence of Arabia , Ryan's Daughter, Passage To India, Dr Zhivargo etc etc for Director David Lean) He states he didn't like shooting past T3.5 for this reason. Citizen Kane was shot 'Deep Focus' all around T11 - T22 ....everything in focus!! this required a huge amount of light on set just to get this look!!

So we all think the BMMC produces great images...... and this is the Canon Mount version Wait till we see a Micro 4/3 mount version and all the glass that we can use then !

great to see all these cameras reviewed a very good article Andrew BMCC is looking very good !!!

looks good wonder when it hits the shops?????

I looked at doing this before with Carl Zeiss16mm lenses but its not really practical even with optical converters So I sold the lenses and bought new ones for the camera I was using......

I dont mind as they may get smashed up attached to a car!!

try a GF2 hacked as a b cam or a GF3 . Im about to do this for some car chaise scenes I have to shoot

Yes there was one on the stand but it had no card in it so I cant say much about it None of the Canon Cameras on display had cards in them !! I did put my own card in the Panasonic GH3 and record .mov at 75 mb/s and it does look good - but all the picture profiles a bright saturated Canon style looking colours. I shot on 'Standard' The files open and play in Quicktime - the camera menu actually says .mov 75mb/s or Avchd 24 mb/s Panasonic have been good labeling the codecs up so you can see EXACTLY what you are shooting you even get a 'warning box' saying you will need a fast computor!!! so you dont need VLC for .mts files like on the GH2 Gone are 'Smooth' and 'Nostalgic' PICTURE PROFILES off the GH2 - the 2 I use all the time!! .....oh well!! I honestly now think the GH2 looks better having now shot on the GH3 changing the sensor on the GH3 has altered the look and feel of the camera it is alot more 'Canon' like now which Im sure is what Panasonic want for future mass market sales. ......but a hacked GH2 is a great camera for the money!!

for some reason Magic Lanten where not there.......... data rates on some of these cameras is now getting huge F65 is 7gig a second off the sensor - compressed down to 2 gig a second so they can store it. Sony did a series of lectures on the F65 and F55 which where very informative. just the cards for the cameras are 2500 pounds each .....if you actually want to use a card..... F55 was very nice and has an Arri Alexa style to it plus modular add on drive and battery at the back. OLED viewfinders too - very very clear and nice to use.

The Arri Alexa has an ISO of 800 so when you shoot outside you do need ND filters once you go past 2 stops ND4 there is a slight colour shift especially in the blacks due to the NDs so you do need to use a IR filter to correct this cast. Had a good talk today with several DOPs on the Arri Stand at BVE North. So there are a few ways of doing this! Some use IR filters and some dont.... Its a personal choise thing!

Panasonic GH3 real-world test (pre-production firmware)
andy lee replied to Andrew Reid's topic in Cameras
I agree Andrew its a agood stills camera and has some nice new features the artificial horizon line on the rear screen was a nice touch so you can keep the camera level I was shooting some metal grills (criss cross shape) on the ceiling of the exhibition centre and the moire was very noticable on the GH3 the good news is the rolling shutter is vastly improved over the GH2 , I would say its similar to my Canon 550d - no worse !! I do think the GH2 has a unique look and is a very good camera -
Jeff Cronenweth uses an 80D with the Red One MX. Schneider has a video from Nab 2011 of their "then" new nd's for matteboxes. They filter IR also, (basically just for true blacks...) - so the selling point was a set of those would be the only filters you would need. All i saw in the video was a Sony EX3 turn a purple hat back into a black one when they stuck it on. I have a Gh2, which sure as hell ain't an Alexa.. Lol.. I don't think i ever saw an issue like that or even thought about it being a problem until i started researching these filters.. Lol.
interesting read here on Cronenwerth with the Red One MX with an 80D filter to give more blue so he had more latitude...interesting idea! we have 2 threads with this news - this was last week see below
http://forum.blackma....php?f=2&t=2431 update from BMD. explains basically everything. Sounds like they have had some MAJOR problems to deal with over the past few weeks. This whole thing has been a bitch of a stress test on the company as a whole. Personally, I think they just grew up big time, and i'm now even more excited to see what they will bring to market in the future.
hope they get this all sorted out soon - we are all hope this camera works well!!

I used ND filter but thats all .. as the more filters you use the softer the image becomes so I keep it simple ! it works best
