yes when I used to shoot film you would have to plan the shot around how much unexposed film you had left ! and you ended up with loads of cans of short ends at the end of the shoot ! I have a garage full of them rotting away ! so digital is a luxury so many people are unaware of and take for granted!! Don't forget you where stuck with one ASA film speed at a time - if you had say 5274 Vison 200T in the camera you couldn't just switch ISO like we do now on each scene!

Hollywood has been resisting the switch to Digital Cameras for years now as it keeps 'the old school' all in jobs. Hollywood is heavily Unionised. I have worked in LA. Alot of jobs on set vanish with a Digital Camera ! plus all the Labs in Hollywood rely on the work to keep them going. George Lucas made the switch with Sony to Digital on the Star Wars prequels and he was seen as a 'maverick odd ball' for doing so. Lucas has held seminars at Skywalker Ranch to help pursuade Directors to swtich over to Digital and he has had hardly anyone turn up for them ...... Slowly Hollywood is embracing the Red Camera as it is American so they are championing the home grown despite all its reliability issues compared to the Sony F35 and Arri Alexa that are much more reliable. Shooting on IMAX is a real luxury in these days , it's so expensive only the top selling Fanchises can even consider it. It is a similar mentalilty to shooting at 4k digital , as it gives the Director the latitude to reframe a shot in post without a noticable resolution loss. All Cinemas digitally project at 2k resolution and alot of cinemas are only just switching over to digital and ripping out their old 35mm projectors. It will be another 5 years until 4k projection at Cinemas takes off as normal . Imax is another marketing tool for Hollywood as they can get extra bums on seats to see films with this premium format.

you can manually resize a Quicktime file once it is open by clicking on the bottom right corner holding down the shift key and pushing the image up so it visually looks reduced by half its a quick way to preview files fast to see what you have shot or use VLC media player it has different crop and aspect ratios

I really like the Yashica f2.8 24mm its C/Y mount and is very very sharp like a Carl Zeiss Flektogon it's like having a 50mm prime on a 5d . I like this lens alot ! Asahi Pentax Takumar 17mm F4 is also very good Carl Zeiss 35mm f2.4 Flektogon is very good on the GH2 amazing bokeh Pentax 40mm pancake lens I like this too for close up head shots An amazing zoom is the Fujinon f1.7, 9-105mm its B4 mount and simply stunning!! has the 2x function on it so you dont need to use EX TELE MODE I cannot stress how good this lens is its very useful! the zoom is insane! and sharp.
Hi guys, My father bought a Canon 550D yesterday and today i'm doing some tests with it. I made the same shots with my own camera, a GH2, and guess what. I almost see no difference! https://vimeo.com/45966612 This is the setup: Panasonic GH2 Lumix 14-140mm lens Vanilla 44MB hack Canon 550D EFS 18-55mm lens Both on full automatic. No color grading. This can't be true, right?
I have done A/B tests with my Canon 550d and GH2 and the GH2 is hand downs way better than the Canon in image quailty Pentax 40mm pancake lens on GH2 , Pentax 50mm on Canon 550d both at f8 - 11 range and both Cameras now have an equivilant 35mm focal lengh of 80mm 200 iso 50 sec standard picture profile on both 1080 p on both cameras The Canon is soft next to a Gh2 , the image is not as detailed and sharp Nuff said!
I think all of us who frequent eoshd thought the same thing: really cool idea but wrong camera. Andrew, are you aware if there's a Cine Housing in the works for the GH2?
Tecnoir make a great Cinema Rig for the GH2 that turns it into a serious filmmaking tool . I use this myself for work. I don't think the GH2 needs a rehousing just a stable professional platform to work from.
Couple of things. Let's talk about the GH2, the hack they used was not stable and crashed a lot. I don't think it would be viable in a real production. One thing that seems to be misunderstood is that the scene was supposed to be very dark. The original lighting was supposed to be a room with a few practlcle lights on in the house and the extreme light coming in form the window. What Colt and Jonny did was to over light the scene and make it a bright room. I think people interpreted this as having the most DR as opposed to being the most pleasing and artfully done. I preferred Polly and Rodney's interpretation, it was more about retaining a moody scene. There are two tests. In part 3 you are going to see how the cameras look out of the box in an apples to apples test with no lighting changes. In part two you saw what talented DP's can do with these cameras. Together this shows you the comparison of what is-- and what is possible. Steve
The shootout is certainly inspiring alot of us on this forum who use GH2 - it also creating alot of debate too! Part 3 will be very interesting - I think it will show the expensive Cinema cameras like the F65, ALEXA and EPIC will show much more advantages against the cheaper ones like the GH2

My top 3 choices from watching part 1 where: Camera H Camera F Camera B I was very surprised to find out they where Camera H - Sony F65 Camera F - Arri Alexa Camera B - Panasonic GH2 wow! stunned ! the two most expensive cinema cameras and the GH2 ! I really thought Camera B was going to be the Red Epic and it was the GH2! So this just goes to show we can all make great Movies with the gear we have!!! .... a GH2 A big salute to Panasonic and Nick Driftwood for putting a camera in our hands that is capable of competing with Hollywood movie Cameras without us spending over 50,000 on the camera. Artistry and talent are such an important part of this and ultimately it is all very subjective and personal. But for me this shows in the right hands the Panasonic GH2 is a world class camera at very very small price compared to the others ....once it has Nick Driftwood's hack on it. So lets go to work and make some great movies! there are no excuses now!!! Andy Lee

Revenge of The Great Camera Shootout Part Two Don't forget PART TWO is released today in a few hours time and we all get to see which camera was used on the clips we watched! I have a feeling the GH2 will be getting good results! I've had alot of fun with this lens it's sharp stopped down , it takes arty funky images , it flares very easily which I like for pop videos and looks nice, Yes it doesn't fill the sensor in normal mode , but it does work in EX TELE mode and is a useful effect lens and is cheap and cheerful only 10 UK pounds...a bargin which is the price of a lens cap, I do like cheap funky lenses for certain effects , I've got a bag full of them that I may only use on one shot or set up for a shoot to get a certain look.

A new hands-on report with the Blackmagic Cinema Camera
andy lee replied to Andrew Reid's topic in Cameras
The Question is how much better is it than a hacked GH2 ? both have similar crop factors and similar size sensors? yes BM is 2.5k ...I'm holding off until I see one in more detail , I eagerly await Andrew's first full hands on review. -
Just like with your other post about your issues with motion jitter/judder, why not upload video examples of the problems?? Would make judging/evaluating/solving the problems so much easier :) Also perhaps have a look at this video: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tqYRmQ7v5TM
Thanks for that I watch it the other day on youtube when I first noticed these rolling shutter issues, This shows slow pans on a tripod - I am moving the camera alot more than this for pop videos and thats when Im having problems with rolling shutter. Thanks Andy

Hi Axel No Im not a GH2 hater at all , I really like the camera its got alot of things I like and some things are better than Canon. It does seem to be worse with rolling shutter.... for the work I do , and I'm keen to find a way to make it work for me having now invested in GH2 as a work camera. I've only had the camera a week so I want to know what I'm doing wrong with it and you all have alot more GH2 experience then me so Im on fast learning curve......any advise is welcome thanks Andy

Hi All, After 2 years working with 5Dmk11 and 550D on a daily basis , I've taken the plunge and bought GH2's for work hoping to entirely switch over the the GH2's as my main work Cameras for shooting pop videos. But I've spent all week testing Canon V Panasonic and the GH2 is lots worse than the Canon for rolling shutter it's almost not usable for the line of work I do.... I keep the camera moving alot , dolly tracks , cranes and fig rigs, hand held on a rig ....etc etc I've just put Andrews Unified 88mbit rate hack onto one of the cameras and it still doesn't look as good as the Canon for camera in motion tests on pan tilt heads or dolly tracks etc. Has anyone else noticed this big issue and had problems with it? Is there any way round this?? Is there a hack anyone would recomend that is better for motion and produces smoother results? (I'm in Cinema 24p mode 1/50 sec shutter, low isos etc etc the camera is set no different to the Canon ) thanks Andy Lee

Hi Axel thanks for your reply. I've been reading up lots and I think it maybe the card I am using Sandisk Extreme class 10 16gb 45mb/s the motion looks jerky.......... fluid then slow fluid then slow - buffering?? When I switch to a Sandisk class 10 8gb 30mb/s the motion is more fluid and less jerky - still not as good as my Canons - which is worrying me. Does anyone know the best hack for smoother motion in Creative movie 24p Cinema mode thanks Andy

Hi Has anyone else had problems with their GH2 producing jittery looking footage ? I'm shooting in Creative movie, 24p cinema , 24h bit rate, 1/50 second , Iso 160 in Nostagla. It looks terrible! unusable.... I have just come off the back of working 2 years with Canon 5DMk11 and 550D shooting commercial pop videos. Lots of movment... camera always moving, fast paced action shots... and I really thought the GH2 was going to be a improvement over the Canons - but it looks alot worse? I couldn't use it like this for a commercial job... Is this an inherent problem with the GH2- It technically looks great on locked off shots ,shooting static landscapes but is bad at any movement? I want to use it for commercial jobs - is a hack going it make the movement issue any better. Andrew have you any footage of fast paced action shot on a GH2? any thoughts on this would be interesting to hear. thanks Andy Lee
