The idea that Chinese companies just steal designs and products is rather dated I think. Some do, many do not. Also, all the R&D in the world will do nothing if the thing can't be made, the relationship here is symbiotic. I think 15mm aluminium tubes, baseplates and so on have been around forever too... the pricing of some-such rigs is obscene and unjustifiable. Claiming R&D on those is not defensible.

New SLR Magic prototype anamorphic lens footage surfaces
jgharding replied to Andrew Reid's topic in Cameras
I would like a multicoated version offered, with very suppressed flares, or a removable filter that has multicoat to suppress them. you don't always want them... sometimes they get in the way, all depends... -
I wondered when this was going to happen. The Contax AX film camera autofocussed on manual lenses (and allowed extreme macro) by moving the film plane back and forth. Great idea! Could be done nowadays with great speed and accuracy...
-
Image is nice, I like that it looks like a film camera-ish! Tiny sensor though and damn does it look inconvenient! Clever person to build it from commercially available parts

The C100 is the easiest to use, the FS100 gives you more options for creative use of rates and lenses. If it's documentary it's C100, if it's promo and so on I'd say FS100. If it's drama, that's a coin toss...

New SLR Magic prototype anamorphic lens footage surfaces

I must admit I like to work faster than a projector lens allows, and am not willing to pay Iscorama prices, so any focus-through adaptor that's quick has my interest for when I want this look. -

It's fine aside from those horizontal flares. They're far too sharp and bright, the same problem apefos has. The flares need diffusing and moving toward either orange or blue. Great work so far, good to see people tackling the lack of supply. Let's just hope the pricing isn't too greedy. -
24 or 28mbps should be a thing of the past. If this has a decent bitrate and 24/25p it'll be in serious consideration as the first four thirds camera I've ever had. If not, despite the stabilisation, it's a no go for me.
-
It doesn't look finished does it? There's a gap between the handle and body! I bet it's a prototype....
-
That'd be good, but the reason I like this kind of stabilisation is you can carry a tiny camera and no rig at all. That's the best thing about RX100, though again, shit codec.
-
Ah I missed that bit. OM mount is 0.5mm shorter between lens and sensor than Nikon F. So if you do find an adaptor, it probably won't allow infinity focus unless the lens is fortunately misadjusted
-
I would buy one in a heartbeat IF they improved video codec and options. That kind of stabilisation would be a godsend. Since they've not given higher bit rates or different frame rates via firmware update, let's hope it's in the next camera. If it is, the thing is mine ;)

I've made tons of project both professional and personal with cheap C/Y to EF adapters. I had to replace one of six, after a year. I say just get some cheap ones, they seem to work fine.

Sigma have beaten Leica - DG 35mm F1.4 vs Summicron-R 35mm F2.0

Great news about the quality of this one. How does the manual focus feel? I assume it's fly-by-wire. Is it any good for subtle adjustments in video? -
Sony have announced a new series of cameras where all the tech is in the lens, and your phone is the viewfinder... http://www.sonyalpharumors.com/sr5-hot-first-images-of-the-new-dsc-qx10-and-dsc-qx100-lens-cameras/ Also, here's a video (possibly fake) of a guy taking a lens and sensor off the screen, and controlling a lens remotely http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tDIZImKrhg8 This above video looks like a working prototype of the concept camera WVIL, but could well be another fake of theirs, especially give 250p . The concept is sound though. http://www.artefactgroup.com/wvil/ It's an interesting concept, Ricoh tried it a few years back but without the remote viewing.

Panasonic G6 is a good option I reckon, double framerates and no aliasing etc. I'm sure it's pretty good in low light. I can speak for 600D Magic Lantern with VAF anti-alias filter and increased bit-rate. I sold the 550D to buy a 600D because of the improved Magic Lantern (Tragic Lantern 600D specific build) and flip out screen. If you go down that route I have a whole post about the best settings to use here: http://www.magiclantern.fm/forum/index.php?topic=6913.50 Here's the last thing I shot with 600D, Mosaic Engineering filter and Tragic Lantern so you can see what you think. Your post workflow is very important, as is shooting with said workflow in place and in mind. http://www.virginmediashorts.co.uk/film/5002/messiah

If you shoot in PoRes it's hard-clipping everything over 100 for sure, unlike C300 you can't pull back the highlights. You mustn't ETTR with ProRes mode. If it's raw mode you're just getting the vital image data in your shot at a sensible point in the DR of the sensor, using aperture ND and shutter. The ISO is post gain. Highlight recovery functions within reason! That's what I've seen so far.

First ProRes files from the Blackmagic Pocket Cinema Camera released
jgharding replied to Andrew Reid's topic in Cameras
Good DR, colour etc. The highlights are hard clipped like a Canon EOS though. I miss the C300/Alexa soft rolloff! It's cheap though, so hey ho! Reason 6 here is where it falls down. It wins in many other ways though. http://nofilmschool.com/2013/05/1080p-better-4k-canon-c100-ryan-e-walters/ Where did this awful form factor come from though? It should be a tube like a camcorder. It's not a stills camera, but they designed a stills body. Definitely not Apple style innovation, despite the aluminium. -
On trying to understand Canon and Blackmagic's strategy on cameras...
jgharding replied to Andrew Reid's topic in Cameras
Pascal, you speak much sense in a clear way. 10 points! -
By "get" do you mean have in your hands immediately, or wait a year after paying  I think it'll mean a load more people place preorders, but there are still no cameras :(

Massive Attack v Adam Curtis hybrid film-gig in Manchester
jgharding replied to Andrew Reid's topic in Cameras
I was there on the Friday! Yes I did noticed some people were really confused, expecting to rave, and instead they entered a pretty dark place... -
+1 Neat Video. Download the demo first. I run everything shot on 550D/600D through it.

It's a form of blackmagic, the film does a lot of the post work itself, but you have to have a wizard to operate it ;)- 40 replies
