It's a pretty clever plug in that it contains all the stages I've always done bit by bit in after effects, in one screen! So you have fewer options, but there nothing to stop you using this as part of a chain. It's a good find...

That's a lot nicer that the other tests. Still be a while before we find out al the tweaks and tips to get the best I suppose. I think I'll someone else spend a year working that out... ;)

Thanks for this, I used it on a simple project at the production company I worked for, one adjustment layer in Premiere CS6 and that was the grade done, aside from a few highlight tweaks!

This guy's channel seems to be a huge list of cameras using the same setup: http://www.youtube.com/user/edcmacro?feature=watch Iwonder if they're real? It seems weird that he'd get all these ahead of time and only do this with them?! The one of the 6D looks great compared to the others

That's a great way to split it. I find I use 2 most often: working with what's there already. Once you start fighting against you surroundings you get in trouble or expense pretty quickly I find!

I used 600LED lights on this zero budget piece: https://vimeo.com/48174944 Plus some workman's LED lights in order to get the flicker in the performance room. In most situations such a flicker would be annoying, but promos tend to be about aesthetic, so it's a fun trick to desync the lights and shutter spped. The 600LED lights don't flicker though, they're great. I have a couple more vids in post. One of those has only 600 LED panel and reflectors. It was four-figure budget, we just spent it all on more important stuff ;)

I think Galenb has got it with his personal pick there, looks great for the money. +1 for flimsy tripods (almost) smashing expensive gear. If I have a lens that's cost me 800 pounds to replace, I'm not mounting that on a flimsy tripod! If you wanna turn that one into a branded tripod, put a Manfrotto sticker on it ;) I bet the same factory make tripods for plenty of other companies.

Here's my favorite lights. They're cheap, so sue me ;) http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/600LEDS-CN600-SA-Studio-Photography-Lighting-BATTERY-MOUNT-DIMMER-LED-Light-/260945997751?pt=UK_Photography_StudioEquipment_RL&hash=item3cc197efb7

When you're talking about colour temperature, not only is it noisiest in the red channel, but it has a 4:2:0 codec. The zero there is red, so you can see that anything with a large amount of red has less data given over to it than light and shadow detail (4) or blue detail (2). Colour balance cooler in camera for better results with 4:2:0 cameras, I find.

I wrote a whole article on lighting for beginners here: http://www.soundonsound.com/sos/mar11/articles/light-fantastic.htm You may find it helps! My most used tools and reflectors (I have three large ones at least with me all the time) and two of those cheap chinese 600LED panels. They're amazing for the money! Fluoros look lovely but they're easy to break and a bit cumbersome for quick jobs.

If you use Neat Video you can noise reduce and sharpen very accurately, at different frequencies of detail. Takes a while to render, but it's great.

Yeah the ACE is brilliant. The Sachtler DSLR is amazing too. I think they're both better than my Manfrotto kit!

I have the 501HDV, it's great. It's a bit overkill, the 701 will do it. The legs make more difference for stability than head as these cameras are so light. Get some thick three stage legs with a spreader and you'll find your 701 much more steady than if you go for some single telescopic stick legs. For instance this 501 kit: http://www.jessops.com/online.store/categories/Accessories/Tripods%20and%20Supports/Tripod%20Accessories/products/Manfrotto/755XBK%20Video%20Tipod%20Kit-77796/Show.html?cm_mmc=GoogleBase-_-TripodAccessories-_-all-_-all&ovc= Is nowhere near s sturdy as this: http://www.manfrotto.co.uk/product/363167/VGI501HDV,525PKIT/_/Manfrotto+UK+-+Video+kit+with+501HDV+Head,+525MVB+Tripod,+520BALL+and+bag?utm_source=google&utm_medium=shopping&utm_campaign=googleshopping&os=googleshopping&m=2747&c=2&o=googleshopping Having used both, simply because the legs on the latter root it into place and are great for high-friction pans, even though the head is the same.

I'm about ready to cross this one off the list. Right now I'm most tempted to swap my 550D for a 600D and get the new ALL-I hacks from Magic Lantern TBH, rather than drop a fortune on a small codec update! Looks like the Sony sensor has scuppered the GH line's individual feel...

I just gave the demo a try, it's a sort of combination of Crumplepop Grain 35 (plus some effects like scaling) and some colour grading presets packaged in a neat way. Not bad, I think I'd use it as a time saver for spicing up promos. Maybe not all over everything though, but it's a nice shortcut!
-
Hmm. I don't think I'd switch to micro four thirds for the GH3 judging by this clip. It has the slightly plasticky feel of the Sony cams like RX100 (I own this) and HX9V. Probably down to sensor tech, as the bitrate is good. Still perhaps another test will show something else.. As an side, I wish people who got these cams to test would go and find a friend and actually do something that's more like a film subject. It's always daylight trees and water and the like. Interview them in a cafe, walk around after them, get them to dance by lamplight. Anything to push it a bit.
-
Hmm that's a shame if they've screwed it with line skipping. Obviously it's a great way to speed up sensor readout and get slow motion without a crop, but the aliasing does get get bad once you're skipping a lot, like at 400 fps plus on FS700. FS700 is great for AVCHD! I suppose we will have to wait for FS1000 with full frame or something like that then?

I have absolutely no doubts that this camera will have a unique and lovely quality to the footage, Leicas always look unique. They use their own sensors, they have their own feel. The stat spiel beinf flung about just doesn't really mean much, on paper an Epic should be nicer looking than Alexa, but I prefer the footage of the latter, in general. I can't afford one, but I'd love one. I do know someone who is getting one, so will get to play at some point...

It occurred to me today that this is the closest we have a to a full-frame BMD camera at the moment. Sony VG900 using CineGamma + Atomos Ninja external recorder using DNxHD or ProRes. I say VG900 simply because A99 has far fewer usable lendsoptions, and the poor form-factor for video, comparatively. Cost is 3000 for VG900 plus 700 for ninja, plus drives on top and Canon batteries for Ninja. Result is probably nicer to use than BMD due to many buttons and handle etc, so less need for a rig. 4000 pounds or so in total, not bad for full-frame pro-res, as long as the HDMI out isn't crippled or fudgy. I remember the shots using FS100 output seemed to give little benefit for some reason... It's probably only 4:2:0 8-biy out though, but let's hope not.

Is this only available in crop mode though? If so that's a bit annoying!
-
Also, try 1/100 shutter speed. Should give a little more filmic motion back at 25p, though a little less blur.

Couple of quick tips: you can switch to manual focus instantly, if you custom assign a button to it. I mapped the left direction button to it, now this switches between autofocus and manual, changing the ring between aperture and focus. Very useful! White balance can also be assigned to a key. I have the right direction set to ISO, and have white balance as the first option in FN. quick access to everything! ;)

Have you downloade the original clip from Vimeo? Practically speaking, a Big reduction in macro blocking compared to firmware default means much better response to grading, color banding and sharpening. also, actual moving shots with proper subjects (not locked off "tests") show nicer movement cadence with I-frame. High bitrate High ISO shots keep the noise more separated and clear so it can be removed more efficiently The cameras only have something like 700 or so lines of resolution so the bitrate won't add that back. But take a look at some of the shots in the magic Lantern thread, still a lot more detail from what's there before encoding.
