Yes I'm a lens geek: http://photorumors.com/2012/09/14/samyang-10mm-12-8-ed-as-umc-cs-lens/#more-31872 If it beats the Tokina 11-16 for IQ or price significantly it's interesting... otherwise... But you may find it interesting as an option for BMD camera...

http://blogs.zeiss.com/photo/en/?p=2860 For those with money to burn (or the rental houses), new high-end Zeiss primes for Canon and Nikon. These resemble the Hasselblad medium-format lenses in size and construction. Pretty spectacular things!

Exclusive - Canon confirm 1D C 4K DSLR is same hardware as the 1D X
jgharding replied to Andrew Reid's topic in Cameras
Let's hope BMD do make a larger-sensor model, I see no reason for thm not to now they have most of the research out of the way for the first model, and it's a hit before it's even arrived! Don't expect it to come cheap though, the cinema cam is the first dose to get you hooked... ;) -
Exclusive - Canon confirm 1D C 4K DSLR is same hardware as the 1D X

It doesn't surprise me, but it's nice that they were open about it! Yes quite, they aren't a charity, they've created a product for a profit and it's entirely up to them the price they sell it for and how they cripple it in order to make money The only thing that will stop them doing this is competition. Apple are a good comparison in that, in their field, when their big product came out the competition was scattered and riddled with compromises. They gained a monopoly. Since then, Android devices have been buggy and all over the place in comparison, but are gradually pulling it together. Apple are separating themselves by producing a premium product and providing a consistent experience. It seems Canon do the same: they may not offer the best of everything stats wise but you know what you're getting. That's really important at some levels, when costing up jobs and all your cameramen are booked up. You say to someone you've never worked with before "can you use 5D or C300" and it's usually "yes". Say to them "can you use a GH2 or AF100" and they usually go "errrrrr". That could change with time though, pride and falls etc. But for now Canon are dominating that section of low to mid level production in my experience. So for the true Indie, maybe Canon won't be the best choice as time goes on, but these two cameras aren't designed to profit from home film-makers, and most home film makers won't actually benefit from 4K at all. Nor RAW to be honest. Personally, right now I don't wish I had a better camera, I wish I knew more good actors :S But let's not start that debate up again! I'm convinced we'll get a reasonably-priced 4K camera soon, though I'd settle for good sharp-looking 1080 with a good sense of depth! But either way, they can take their 8000 pound firmware update and stick it where the sun don't shine. -
I would love to see it. I read something about a Hasselblad-Sony partnership that would result in Hasselblad's first(?) full frame camera. I don't know why Sony would do this considering that it could challenge their A99, but the schematics are out there.
I reckon the pricing will stop it being a challenge to the A99, it'll be at least six or seven thousand for any Hasselblad full frame. Think of how much the Lunar is, and it's basically an NEX7 The medium format backs could probably add video if they wanted, like the crazy Phase One IQ series. The IQ180 is 80 megapixels...

No sooner do I open my mouth to say 7D probably won't be hacked at this rate, than... Canon 6D officially announced - a more compact and affordable 5D Mark III
jgharding replied to Andrew Reid's topic in Cameras
Hmm, looks like it is new. Looking at the sample video on Canon's web site, there seems to be quite a bit of Moire, even through the compression... -

With this new line of lenses, we are continuing our concept of high-quality lenses for this camera system while attempting to construct them with relatively light materials. For the mechanical parts, we were looking for the best tradeoff between quality in material and total weight. As a result, we decided on a mix of materials. For parts that require no metal for accuracy or strength, we have also approved lighter materials." Or to put it simply, no. They'll have cheaper build. But the pictures should look nice and hopefully they'll be a bit more affordable as a result.

Mad! There's always a Leica or two to lust after... looks lovely, the crazy price was to be expected though...

Canon 6D officially announced - a more compact and affordable 5D Mark III
jgharding replied to Andrew Reid's topic in Cameras
Here's an interesting quote from Canon Rumors forum: "According to Canon USA the image format of 6D is 35.8mm x 23.9mm, 5D2 is 36mm x 24mm. I guess Canon just trim down the 5D2's sensor a bit. Maybe the AF is also modified from the 9 point AF in the 5D2. In this way, Canon is able to use these 4 years old parts to create a new body, reduce the overstocked 5D2 sensors and AF module and cut the cost a lot. Three birds with one stone." "As it stands right now it's not really a FF cam - it's a crop camera with a 1.006x crop factor..." I suppose it won't be long til we find out. That would be seriously cheap, even for Canon. If we can find out the dot pitch of the sensor, then we should know... EDIT: "With a pixel pitch of 6.55 microns, that could be a boon in the sensitivity department, as the 5D II was 6.4 and the 5D III was 6.25 microns." I'm assuming it's different then? -
Canon 6D officially announced - a more compact and affordable 5D Mark III
jgharding replied to Andrew Reid's topic in Cameras
If Canon follow the usual patterns, it's only six months til the budget full-frame hits. Like the 7D -> 60D -> 550D thing. There's no reason not to just stick a full size 135 sensor in a budget body now. I'm glad I only bought full-frame lenses! -

Looks cool, should be pretty cheap after about three months too as they all seem to tumble. Here's hoping for Magic Lantern! No swivel screen is a bummer though... -
I thought it'd be about £1000 so it looks a little cheaper than I expected. A good feature set! Hopefully it'll push some of the other players into offering better codecs and the like.

The camera looks awesome! I'm following the Magic Lantern ALL-i 160mbps hack with more excitement though ;) that'll cost me zero pounds. Woop! (weel actually I'll donate again, but technically)
I don't know why but I keep getting this image in my mind of manufacturer executives gathering together in some board room and deciding where to steer us in order to drip feed us on the same old, same old. Year in year out.
Because that's half of the reality! The other half is competition, which keeps the features moving forward. Lack of competition lead almost immediately to Canon's piss-taking policy of giving as little as possible for huge money, but now they may have to rethink... Things move forward when there's competition, as soon as it goes and monopoly comes in, service collapses. as there's no incentive to improve.
I'm using a 64GB 95MB/s sandisk card, and I can't go above CBR 1.4. I don't see these noise improvements people keep mentioning. I really hope it's just me messing up.
It is ;) You have to switch off sound recording in the normal Canon menus, then you can get to 2.8 or 2.9 with that card.

There are already parallax barrier screens that don't require glasses, they are kinda fun, but not amazing. Stereoscopic 3D has a future on single-user devices, but otherwise it's impractical, unless an entirely new technology appears. If video consumption shifts more toward single-user devices, and someone like Apple sticks a parallax barrier retina screen in a phone, it'll take off. until then, its a gimmick.

There is a chance that it will be opened up to ML, but a few have tried and failed. It seems the different hardware (two processors) and the like are stopping them from exploiting the camera running code on it. At this stage most people appear to be working on the more popular XXXD models, or the newer 5D iii, so I think the smart bet would be to write off ML on 7D.
-
I thought that the image quality of all the Canon APS-C sensor DSLRs was the same. They are using the same sensor after all & Magic Lantern is more about improving functionality than anything else (unlike the GH2 hack which doesn't alter functionality at all).
It is, without the hack applied. Magic Lantern is a much deeper hack now. They've improved the noise level of all the ISO settings, as well as highlight roll-off for certain settings. The 7D is locked to the default bitrate (48mbps I think), while ML2.3 equipped 550D for example, will peak at 120 or so in high ISO high-complexity scenes if you use a fast card, it's far nicer as the noise is easier to remove, it isn't mushed into the image. The higher bitrate footage has more detail and grades a little more subtly. They're also close to cracking All-I 160mbps for 550D, 600D etc. So it really is a hack not only for amazing still and video functionality, but also improving the bitrates of the camera. The release versions are also incredibly stable. My biggest bug-bear with the 7D lack of ML though, beside the lower bitrate, is no live histogram or peaking, I don't think I could do without those now! It is waterproof though.

It's only Canon now who don't give an uncompressed out via HDMI... Nikon and Sony are there now.

They really are desperate to keep selling new things to consumers, and the old production industry is desperate to differentiate "pro" from consumer production. 3D is a headache-inducing hassle, and 4K is just too much of a luxury and doesn't make enough difference to the the end user experience. People's houses are getting smaller, not bigger, we're over populated in the extreme! There aren't enough people with room for a 100-inch telly to support this stuff. There will be another world war before 4K is in every home, unless Apple release a cheap 4K iPad. Like that'd make a blind bit of difference to the viewing experience... most content I work on day to day is delivered SD or 720p. a request for full HD is quite rare. One project shot at 5K was delivered 1080i. My own promo work is always 720p or 1080i. The best film-like digital images I've seen come from the Alexa, that's 1080p. Drive looked amazing on a huge cinema screen, as did Avatar, both 1080p. So where do you really reap a benefit that justifies the huge extra cost of 4K? Screw 4K, what about actually distributing some interesting content in 1080p? There's so much out there that's ignored... what about saying "that's good enough quality" for a while, and focussing on the content. It shows that the biggest companies are the distributors...

Sony A99 revealed with new video optimised full frame sensor
jgharding replied to Andrew Reid's topic in Cameras
Competition should drive Canon to stop the silly price vs features imbalance now, I would have thought. Periods of aggressive competition are always great for end users! Though it does seem that Canon are intent on keeping pro video and stills separate for a while... Sony would steal a lot more users if they made a mirrorless version of this, as people could even use EF specific glass. all those who have used 5D and the like but don't want to but C100/300 or BMD cam would be tempted... I agree on the AVCHD point. I've said it elsewhere on this forum, it's the major letdown of the Sony footage. For the most part it's OK but sometimes that codec tumbles into a pixellated mess, especially with high-motion shooting. Agreed standard or not, it sucks, especially as ALL-I over 100mbps is well on the way from the Magic Lantern team unified branch (starting with 600D).
