CANON 1D-C

Aggrotron, The name of the (short) film is "The Ticket". The DP is Shane Hurlbut ("Act of Valor"). Now, I saw this in Los Angeles in a major cinema with over 400 people and I am not kidding, it looked absolutely stunning. The best video I've ever seen besides; "The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo". (Jeff Cronenweth - Red Epic). This footage from "The Ticket" was shot with a DSLR! For those who wanted to know, yes Hurlbut used "Dark Energy" in post-production. I think it's bad ass but some didn't like the effect and wanted to see the orginal files (which would have been even sharper) Unfortunately on You Tube, some idiots are uploading 4k at 720p like crazy - but watch it anyway, just remember, that it dosen't look like this at all. 3 Links: The film - 4K /APS-H, another link where Hurlbut talks about how he made it and how the Canon 4K 1 DC is going to change the way Hollywood feature films are made in 2013. It's long (keep reading into the comments where Hurlbut talks) but it's an awesome read. The last Link is Hurlbut talking about how he uses the "Dark Energy" - (it handles compression issues, etc..) 2. Andrew, I hear ya. For $3 grand you're right. The Blackmagic cannot be beat. I guess I'm pumped about the new 4k because of the DSLR form factor (and some other cool things the cam does) but it is 5 x as much cash. I cannot argue with that statement and the Blackmagic does look incredible for that price point.

CANON 1D-C

Andrew is right, 15K is a lot of green for most DSLR shooters, but let's be fair for a second. Ok, the APS-H sensor size (4K 8-bit 4:2:2 color - on the 1-DC) is quite a bit larger then APS-C (closed to Super 35 for movies) and you will notice a huge difference. It's basically in the middle... Check this; 25mm lens = 32.5mm on APS-H 25mm lens = 40mm on APS-C This gives more options. Also, let's not forget that the 1-DC does Full HD on the Full Frame Sensor (which will be well over 1,000 lines, unlike the 5D3 and yes, better then the GH2/3) and the cam also gives you the option to shoot Super 35! (APS-C ). So, you're getting 3 in 1 on a 4K internal HDSLR! I can't be the only dude excited about this! It also has Canon's Log Gamma (same as C300) which is a MONSTER advantage (shadow details/highlights) and the color grading is gonna be off the flippin chain. Records to CF cards internally! Remember that on the Full HD you can (if so desired) use ext recorder because it has a HDMI terminal. This is an uncompressed 4:2:2 sig. And, of course, I saw this on the big screen and I kid you not it looked like 35mm film. I wish you guys could have seen it, because I don't believe you would be balking about the 15 gg's if you just saw what the damn thing looked like on a huge 65 ft screen (same screen I saw the new Batman on)...to hell with the specs! (as cool as they are). And yes!!, it has a fuckin headphone jack :D
4. Andrew, I believe the 1 DC will change your mind about Canon DLSrs. I know people have seemed underwhelmed about the short film Canon released on the 1DC when they saw it on Vimeo. However, I viewed Shane Hurlbut's 'The Ticket' in Los Angeles, (with Shane in attendance) in a real movie theatre, on a 65 foot giant screen, and it was simply amazing. (not the short movie itself - LOL), but the quality was absolutely brilliant. I saw Laforet's short film shot on the C300 on the big screen here in LA as well, and while it held up nicely on the 65 footer, the 1 DC from Hurlbut blew it out the water. Not even close. The Internet does not do this cam justice at all. And just to throw this out there, I also was at the screening of actor/director Ed Burns (Saving Private Ryan) new feature film "Newlyweds" (he screened it in theatres before it went to VOD, and again on the 65 foot big screen, and although it wasn't nearly as sharp, the packed house of over 400 people loved the film. And this was shot on the 5D2!! - not the 5D3. Not one person complained about the image. They just dug the movie. So yes, you can purchase a Canon DSLR and put it on the Big Screen and make some serious cash if you have a cool movie. Shane Hurlbut said that in 2013 he is already going to DP 3 feature films for theatrical distribution that is going to be shot on the 1 DC only! I still say if you do not like the price point, just rent it. Andrew, I don't know if your future goal is to DP movies, or you want to shoot docs, or you're just doing all this for fun...but if your getting into cinematography for feature films, the new Canon will do you (your vision) justice.
5. The C300 is the obvious answer. Works perfect out of the box, a proven winner, and fantastic tech support. Filmmaker Ron Howard's brand new racing car film is shot on the C300, and about (at least) 25 other Hollywood movies released in early 2013 are ALL shot on the C300. The proof is in the pudding, as they say. If the C300 is good enough for Hollywood and mainstream filmmakers, then it's good enough for anyone.
6. iFranky - The 1DX is FAR sharper then the 5D3 out of the box (closer when you post, but still not as sharp in my opinion). As far as DR, the 1DX blows the 5D3 out of the water in any situtation. If the new Sony next month does not up this game, then its the 1DX as winner for quite awhile - unless you wanna spring $15,000 for the 4K 1DC. That will be the ultimate DSLR (to quote Hurlbut).
7. You will see the softness big time on a huge screen - when compared to other cams on a huge screen. However, put some beautiful naked girl dancing with another beautiful naked girl and I really doubt anyone will give a shit. They'll call you the new Coppola :)
8. Just difficult. It really comes down to the atmosphere, lighting and DP. And of course the subject and director. They all have a place...just not all are right for feature films in my opinion.
9. I hear ya Gerymy 1979! Hahaha.. Andrew, I agree with a lot of what your saying except I find the 1DX to be sharper to me then what you feel. And the image looks different, maybe its this big screen Im watching it on. I guess it really is that "X" factor. I just feel it looks more "cinematic", if I can use that word.
10. JCS - is correct. Opinions are cool...but facts are facts. Let's see the hard numbers. I've had people tell me they still prefer Hi-8 video over Digi Beta...so let's pull out the charts. It still will not stop people prefering apples to oranges and thats cool too...but we'll know the hard numbers. Thats what these forums are for. INFORMATION and EDUCATION. MaxApetureFilms said: "JCS, if you want to pixel peep rez charts, that's cool, but the results seem very clear that the BMD image is light years ahead of all HDSLRs." Respectfully, I could not disgaree more with that statement. To me, this Blackmagic cam looks very video-ish. Like the new Sony F700. Like the Kineraw S35. The Canon DSLR's full frame look like movies (cinema) to me. Now please wait till I put on my bullet proof vest before you start shooting :)
11. Haha!...great post, Germy1979! Can't say I blame you. Sounds like you got a hell of a lot for the buck! I'm with you, 35 years ago the GH2 would have made my Christmas morning for sure :) Imagine the kids 35 years from today! There's a hell of a lot of things wrong with this world today, but technology is not one of them.
12. I'm not a follower by any means. I do tons of research. I do not just take anyones word for something. However, Bloom has proven himself (much like Vincent Laforet) I do trust Bloom. I met him several times (as well as Laforet) in Vegas (NAB) and he is a genuinely likable guy with a passion for gear. I do not think Bloom would deliberately lie to anyone about cameras. As far as my own eyes go, I downloaded the original file from Bloom's video (as well as James Miller's videos) and it (they) looks fantastic to me. Much much better than any other DSLR footage I have ever seen. Art is subjective, right? I love full frame and trying to decide to purchase the 1DX or the new Sony…or...rent the Canon 1 DC 4 K in a few months. I also love the DSLR form factor. I shoot in places where it is either illegal or would cost enormous amounts of cash to get permits. Plus it’s amazing tech for the size and I don't need a large crew. Germy1979 - I do like the footage from the Alexa but out of my price range. What camera did you end up with?
13. Sorry guys, I love you gearheads and good conversation, but I have to go with a guy who is obsessed with cameras, and gets paid to shoot them. ($ for a living). Phillip Bloom on the Canon 1DX: QUOTE - “What I didn’t expect was how much I actually preferred the 1DX’s image for this type of filming to the C300. It just seems…more filmic. Hard to put my finger on what it is…the look of the 1DX was so organic I was just blown away. The low light performance of the 1DX is also better than the Mk3, very close to the C300 standards…it also has extraordinary high dynamic range…the video of the 1DX is much better than the Mk3, it’s also better than the D800. It’s funny after being so uninterested in the 1DX, the results I got from it just show that you should never just read specs. There is so much more to a camera than specs and figures. On paper, this was the same as the Mk3 for video, but in use the 1DX really is that much better.” – End Quotes And no, I do not believe for one second that Canon UK or Canon USA, has sent Phillip Bloom a $ check for those statements.
14. Charlie orozoco - Thanks for going through all that work, but the fact is the issue is the You Tube/Vimeo compression. I see what you're seeing with your blow-ups and the door in the video, and if that were really there (and not a compression problem on the Internet) P. Bloom would have stated - correction; he would have BLASTED the camera in his blog. Just like he blasted the D4 and D800. Bloom PRAISED the 1-DX to no end in his new blog, and said the camera was amazing. He does not get paid by Canon. Cannot see why the man would hide the truth if there was an issue. He did not, because there is no issue. We'll see what the new Sony has to offer, but right now the 2 best DSLR's on the planet are the 1-DC (read Hurlbut's review and watch short film) and the 1-DX, which is the same camera minus 4K. Since Sony's product will be (no doubt) much cheaper, I'm hoping their new full frame is better then the Canon's.
15. Andrew, Bloom's new music video was not sharpened in post. Re-watching again (Apple 27 inch) I'm thinking now it must be the much better high dynamic range the 1-DX has. Has to be. Again, just hard to put in words, but I'm gonna go with that. If the new Sony can top it on the DR it has a winner - and a new buyer. HurtinMinorKey - Yes, the color is very different (subjective, but obviously very different between the 5D3 and 1 DX) between the two cameras. Tyler talked about it in his blog.
16. I appreciate all opinions here, but I guess I'm on an island. I find easy much much sharper than the 5D3 out of the box. Doing extra post is a pain in the ass. If the 5d3 had this image to begin with, everybody would have been estatic. And, its not just that, the image this camera produces is just 'different' then the 5D3. Its hard to put it in words. It looks different to me, much different, and I'm not talking about being 10 - 15% sharper. The image is just more pleasing to the eye. More filmic. I admire Andrew and what he's done for the DSLR community but I'm in agreement with James Miller and P Bloom on the 1-DX. Its a much better camera for video than the 5D3. That being said, I'm hoping that Andrew is right about the new Sony. Will wait 2 more months to purchase.
17. Andrew, For some reason (lighting maybe) this video of the Canon 1 DX (and review) seems a HUGE step up from the 5D3. Let me know your opinion. Btw, I agree with you 100%, when its done correctly, you really can't touch the unique full-frame look. Will be interesting to compare the new Sony to this.
18. "a full frame DSLR with equal emphasis on pro video and stills". I'm not a Canon fan boy by any means, just want the best product, but what you describe sure sounds a lot like the Canon 1-DX. Bloom just called the 1-DX "amazing". Also, what about the 1-DC? Why not rent these camera for a movie instead of buying an inferior product for $2,500?
19. Can't wait to compare the video the D800 and the 5D3
20. I can't argue with that statement. However, $6,500 doesn't seem to be bad if thats your fave form factor.
21. 3rd test: Even more so. 1DX is bext full frame DSLR. http://vimeo.com/46186716
