1920x1080p H264 is up-sampled by the camera... Raw is much more detailed and sharper, even with the 'lesser' resolution.

The whole Sony <3 Olympus thing is pretty new though. Olympus always only had 30p, while Panasonic went full out with video functions (GH1, GH2)... The deal between Sony and Olympus is mostly about the medical branch of Olympus. Sony invested heavily because they don't just want to rely on the consumer market. Camera wise technology is going in both directions, the sensor in the OM-D is from Sony for example.

Introducing the SLR Magic anamorphic lens - hands on with new V3 prototype
Julian replied to Andrew Reid's topic in Cameras
Why did you pixelate your espresso on the right?? The SLR anamorphic looks very promising. Probably will ditch most of my old projection lenses for this, if the quality is good. Would love to see some samples with the 5D III + 50mm fullframe combo. -
Cool project. Keep us updated! Would love to see the result.

New iPhone 5S at a glance - iSight camera gets 120fps slow-mo
Julian replied to Andrew Reid's topic in Cameras
Might look better when resampled to 1080p... It sure doesn't hurt to have it. -
Andrew, check the studio comparison at DPreview again. I think they made a mistake somewhere, as ISO 6400 is not selectable anymore. The E-M1 doesn't look better than the GX7 at 3200 or 12800. Maybe they put a wrong value for 6400 and removed it...

Fewer frames isn't necessarily a bad thing. Filmmakers prefers 24p/25p over 30p, because of the fewer frames which result in a different look.
-
I kind of get the idea there is more to it then just laziness on their part. They must grasp the simple fact that they would sell some more camera's to another audience if they'd include 25p/24p. And it can't be that much work. Is it some kind of agreement with Panasonic to leave the video features to them in return for some favor by them? Just a conspiracy theory... but I find it hard to believe it's something they simply 'overlook' every time.

I agree that it is a bit too much. Would like to see some more DOF, that would make the effect a bit more subtle. Anyway, nice experimenting!

It's quite usual to see new tech in consumer products first (if the tech is 'interesting' for consumers). Like wifi and gps made it's way to compact camera's years before it went into dslrs. 4K in phones will bring 4K to the attention of the masses. It's gonna be easier to convince people they have to buy a 4K tv if they already have 4K devices. Besides, putting 4K in a smartphone won't kill any current product line up either. It's not like people are going to trade their dslr's/movie camera's for a smartphone because it shoots 4K. Biggest surprise for me is that the Sony Xperia Z1 doesn't shoot 4K. It was rumoured it would and since Sony is making 4K tv's and even launching a 4K streaming service I thought they would push it.

I have a strong aversion against incorrect aspect ratio's ;) The 1.33x grabs definitely look wrong.

Raw video on the Canon 7D - Super 35mm raw for under $1000
Julian replied to Andrew Reid's topic in Cameras
Really? I think it's the kids who are hacking their camera's and shooting raw with the camera they already have... -
/edit: nvm, it's fake: http://www.sonyalpharumors.com/sr5-hot-first-picture-of-the-ilce-7000-or-a7000-semi-pro-camera-with-is-and-z-shift-sensor/

Good to see you guys like it. Nicely put into words. I opened the topic because of the technique, but your description of the movie is spot on and I fully agree. I don't get why it's rated so low in IMDB. Usually films like this get higher ratings and I sure think it deserves more. Actually I found the movie on this list: The Best Movies you didn't see in 2012 Another gem from that list: The Raid (Serbuan Maut) Not anamorphic, although I liked the fact that it was shot on Panasonic AF100's.

Looking forward to see the results dhessel. How about shooting in 5:4 in full sensor mode? That might kill the vignetting and give you some longer recording times. 1562x1250 or 1500x1200 for example. With a 2x anamorphic that will give a 2,5:1 aspect ratio. I just picked up a 5D2, have to pick up some EOS > M42 / Nikon adapters though.

New SLR Magic prototype anamorphic lens footage surfaces
Julian replied to Andrew Reid's topic in Cameras
I agree on the flares. Would really prefer something more subtle. Bokeh looks nice to me for 1.33x. So is this a single focus anamorphic? If it works on 50mm fullframe, it should work on 25mm m43 I suppose? -
The stabilisation on the GX7 doesn't work for video. Also, it is not smaller than a NEX-5. It does offer better video quality though. I actually can't quite grasp your complaint about the NEX-5 being to big and heavy. Maybe the lenses you are using? The NEX is one of the smallest interchangeable camera's on the market. If size/weight is what you are concerned about, you should have a look at the Sony RX100 / RX100 II: http://www.eoshd.com/comments/topic/3126-sony-rx100-mark-ii-m2-review-evolution-in-times-of-revolution/

Probably not much. Looks like big/heavy projection lenses, can't really see which ones exactly. Write down the exact markings on the lenses. Try searching for those types on eBay and then look for 'completed actions' to see what prices they went for recently. That should give you an idea.

Here is an example of a speed booster + anamorphic on a NEX. Should work the same for the FS100: http://www.eoshd.com/comments/topic/3066-speedbooster-effect-on-anamorphics/?p=39810
