The difference between the 5D2 and 5D3 sensor isn't big at all (click) True, it makes a big difference in video, but that has to do with other stuff (processing, line skipping). Nikon aps-c (toshiba) has two more stops raw at low iso than a 6D / 5D3 fullframe... If Canon actually makes a sensor as good as the toshiba or sony ones, then their aps-c camera will beat their fullframe line up for dynamic range. Would be a bit weird, but we'll see.

Let's hope it has a super fast sd card controller and ML can make it shine ;) For some reason I'm not expecting much of the new sensor in terms of DR and low light performance...

Vitaliy Kiselev decoding Nikon D7100 firmware, discovers "LiveView Raw"
Julian replied to Andrew Reid's topic in Cameras
I think ML is a huge project with a lot of knowledgeable people working on it, putting a lot of time in it, making it better day by day. The GH2 / Nikon hack, seems to be mostly a one person thing... I know lots of other people are working on making the ideal hack settings (codec optimization?) but the actual hacking seems to be at a much smaller scale (that's the feeling I get at least, I'm not an insider). Must be impossible to do the same kind of work that ML does on your own. Would be great if we can get raw on more dslrs, but I think it's hard to beat the power of ML in terms of 'organisation' and man power. -
It's pretty nice. I had the chance to shoot with it yesterday for a short time. Didn't have much time to try video. One thing I noticed is you can both use PAL and NTSC now, but it wants to format the card when you change... weird! It lives! 5 year old $350 Canon 50D becomes raw cinema monster

I'm a bit behind all of the recent developments. Busy with work and other camera's (a new one tomorrow... which I can tell more about on Thursday ;)) 1080p in crop mode only works with a very experimental build by 1% and with a lot of tweaks as far as I know. Not with the unified one. Check the super active topics at ML: http://www.magiclantern.fm/forum/index.php?topic=5586.1825 http://www.magiclantern.fm/forum/index.php?topic=6554.75 -
How did you desqueeze? Did you crop? You have an 3.05:1 ratio now. I suspect you desqueezed 1.7(ish)x from 1920p and used the whole frame? I think it's still about 10% squeezed. Not a big deal, I tend to notice these things though :P

Great job man. Love the look. Don't mind the shaky camera. Good acting. Some things I noticed: The blue flashing lights looks a bit small.. like a LED or something, not really like cop car flashing lights... Bigger lights would have been cool, especially with the anamorphic flares! The de-squeeze looks a tiny bit off.. I think it's still a bit squeezed? Not much but I have the feeling something is 'off' a bit.

You're right, 16mm vs 18mm is quite a difference. When comparing them in my head I completely forgot to think about the focal length.. lol. Was just thing about the price tag and aperture.

But what kind of compression is that..? That's like 3.5MB per frame. Usually a dslr with H264 codec does something like 25Mbps at 1080p (25/8 = 3,125MB/s). The first consumer 4K camera's will probably be heavily compressed as well. Even if they would use 4x the amount of data (4K = 4x 1080p) that would ammount to 100Mbps = 12,5MB/s = 750MB/minute or roughly 44GB/hour. Of course that wouldn't be 1DC quality, but I think this is how we will see 4K in consumer dslrs first.

JVC launch a 4K camera with Nikon mount which gets almost everything wrong
Julian replied to Andrew Reid's topic in Cameras
I don't have anything against Blackmagic.. but I don't think their products are as 'final' and bug free as Canon/Nikon etc. I think the BMCC won't even let you delete clips in the camera? people are waiting for a firmware update for ever.. and I'm sure that's not the only issue. Not that this is rocket science... but for the big companies it's not like simply 'flipping a switch' either (canon raw video for example). -

And now try making it 100% stable and consumer friendly for a mass market. That might take some time... -
Get a 50D!

It looks and sounds like an aprils fool's joke... Why on earth that Nikon F mount? Useless gap between the mount and the sensor. How about Sony E mount.. it's an open standard... then at least you could adapt anything you wanted, put a speedbooster on it etc... -
Voted 2015.. But actually think it might be sooner. I think the first 4K dslrs won't be very impressive. It will just be a marketing thing. Lots of (bad) compression and low actual resolution... Might also depend on the bigger picture. The adaptation of 4K. No sense in selling 4K to consumers if they don't know what to do with it. If (consumer) 4K tvs are getting more mainstream, (consumer)camera makers want to have a part of that... Heard rumors about new iMacs with 5K resolution... http://nofilmschool.com/2013/06/5k-apple-retina-display-imac-osx-mavericks/ Might sound crazy, but it would make sense, as it's currently 2560x1440. If they could make that 5120 x 2880... they can do the same trick as with the Retina iPad (1024x768 > 2048x1536) and the Retina Macbook (1440x900 > 2880x1800) - the whole OS will look the same, but everything is much sharper. This would really help getting high dpi monitors more popular for the pc market.

correction ;) I think this beast might hurt Samyang a bit. Their new 16mm f/2 aps-c prime ($500ish?) becomes rather useless now.

Yep, price is official now. €759 or $799 I think that's crazy.... cheap.

Can't get it any cheaper than this probably and the quality isn't bad at all. Will post a better picture of this setup soon. Was planning to to open a topic about it...

I think there are different ones. I have one like that that's +1.

Advice on eBay anamorphic lens listing (No advertising)
Julian replied to Andrew Reid's topic in Cameras
It looks pretty sweet Mondo, haven't heard of it though, can't tell you more about it. I like the typography on this one :P Looks not very practical though. Big and fixed focus. http://www.ebay.com/itm/PRISMATIC-HILUX-264-ANAMORPHIC-LENS-VINTAGE-/300916810177 -

What card? And how about 1920x872? With the latest build and a 1000X card 70-73MB/s should be possible. -

Zoom first, then go into the ML menu and you can select the other resolutions. Preview is pink and you don't get what you see (the recorded area is much bigger than the zoomed area you see). I just checked and 2.35:1 @ 2000x852 should be possible (68.1MB/s needed) Or 2.20:1 @ 1920x872 (66.9MB/s needed) 2:1 at 1920x960 would be nice but at 73.7MB/s that is a bit too much currently I suppose. -

What resolution Tim? Can you try how many frames you can get at 1920x1080 in 5x zoom mode for example - and then lower the vertical resolution till you get continuous recording? -

Julian replied to Andrew Reid's topic in Cameras
With 70MB/s higher resolutions (in crop mode) and framerates are possible. For 1584x892 @ 24 fps (max width in full sensor mode) you need about 57-59MB/s I think. So with 70MB/s you can get higher framerates (30 is max). In 5x crop mode the 50D can go to a maximum resolution of 2000x1080p, and for that you need way more than 70MB/s. As soon as I get my Komputerbay 64GB card I'll test what's the max possible continuous resolution. 1920x720 was already working. -
