  1. This is nothing short of a miracle. ISO... 400?

    No...

ISO H2... 12.800 equivalent. Yes, really!

    I still can't believe what I'm seeing.

There is banding in the moving images though, but still, it's crazy.

Just did a rerun with a nikkor 50mm 1.4... movies soon.

The 50D is going to be a huge hype I think :) 1592x840 looks perfect played on full screen at 1920x1080. With the current built it starts skipping frames at some point. But if it gets stable with some more optimizing.. then wow.

Grab one while you can :)

  2. It is exactly like you say. Every frame of the video is a photograph. With the Canon hack you get 24 DNG's (an universal raw standard) per second. The resolution is lower than photographs though, but still you have much more sharpness and dynamic range.

It existed before, but until recently a camera that would film in raw would cost you like $20K to $100K.

Last year, Blackmagic released the BMCC, it films in raw for $3K. That was a big break though.

Beginning this year, Blackmagic announced the Pocket Cinema Camera, raw for $1000 (smaller sensor though), another break trough.

Now recently Magic Lantern discovered how make almost every Canon dslr with live view film in raw! The 5D3 works best, bit pricey.. but awesome if you have one already :)

The cheaper models like the 550D/600D can do it in low resolution only because of the slower SD card controller.

The 5 year old Canon 50D which cost like $300 on eBay can do it in decent resolutions... which is pretty amazing.

    Exciting times :)

  3. Keep an eye out for the 50D... I'm trying it right now. It's dirty cheep (for now...) and in terms of moire looks better than the 5DII to me. Resolution is a bit less, but at 1592x840 (not completely without frame drops yet, 1592x720 is) I'm sure it will hold up against standard 1080p on most hdslrs.

I shot a 5D II clip yesterday, will upload some DNG's for you guys to judge.

  4. Sample footage! shot some boring bricks to test for moire. Looks pretty good to me. I have the feeling it's better than the 5DII... Would have to check in a direct comparison though.

Some exported sequences and some DNG files to play with. All the info in the readme.txt.

    1592x840 @ 24 fps - Nikkor 50mm f/1.8 @ f/8
    1280x960 @ 24 fps - Nikkor 50mm f/1.8 + Kowa B&H 2x anamorphic - Stretched to 2560x960 in Premiere
And a sharpened 1920x720 version of that last one.

    I love this :D

Just need to order some badges... :P

  5. I traded my old 5D in for a 50D and cash.

Got raw recording working. Tested with Sandisk 32GB 95MB/s CF.

1592 is the max width. Max reliable speed seems to be 50MB/s for me with this card.

    Results (24 fps):

    1592x1062 - frame skipping after about 50 frames (67.7MB/s)
    1592x840 - frame skipping after about 480 frames (53.5MB/s)
    1592x720 - no frame skipping (44.3MB/s)

    1320x1062 - frame skipping after about 300 frames (56.1MB/s)
    1320x960 - frame skipping after about 1200 frames (50.7MB/s)
    1320x840 - no frame skipping (44.3MB/s)

    1280x1062 - frame skipping after about 250 frames (54.4 MB/s)
    1280x960 - no frame skipping (49.2MB/s)

Yes. That is a 5 year old dslr, worth about €300 (probably more soon, get one while you can!) shooting raw video without problems in a lovely 1280x960 ratio for 2x anamorphic

Will keep you guys updated about the quality, moire etc.

  6. Any samples on Vimeo from the 50D? Does it sample the sensor cleanly with no moire or aliasing?

Wouldn't couldn't on it... all of the Canons except for the 5D3 seem to have the usual moire and aliasing problems, but in raw it looks much pronounced. I've seen tests where it does look much better in 5x zoom live view  mode though.

I'm working on getting a 50D, just because it's so damn cheap. As soon as I get one, I'll report back!

  7. Don't open all the DNG's in CS6/ACR, that's unnecessary.

    1. Open Photoshop

    2. Open Bridge (File, Browse in Bridge)

    3. Navigate to your DNG's, open one DNG of your sequence and edit it, just press 'done' when finnished.

    4. Back to bridge, select the edited DNG, right click > develop settings > copy settings.

    5. Select all DNG's from the sequence, right click > develop settings > paste settings.

    6. Select all > right click > export to > hard drive, etc!

Exporting the frames takes most of the time. You could first grade all your shots, copy all the settings, when everything is done select all your shots (probably in seperate folders, just sellect the folders), export everything while you take a break.. :)

For windows users there is a great app to create a quick proxy, you can use it to preview your files for example.

  8. I have a BM Pocket on order and would be willing to cancel it if the 5D Mark II raw is good enough. Borrowed a friends 5D II, but imo the moire/aliasing is horrible... Almost unworkable if you are moving the camera's and there are bricks or other small details in shots with big dof. With people faces / nature it looks pretty good indeed.

  9. That's because you are shooting in a flat mode, you have to expert the raw 'flat' as well. You are not going to get the same image you get on your screen, you get a raw file, the 'look' is applied when you convert the dng's. Use the histogram to expose your shots correctly.

    On another note:

Someone wrote a cool windows app to generate quick proxies from the .raw files: http://www.magiclantern.fm/forum/index.php?topic=5557.0

It also unpacks all your raw files into different folders.

  10. Interesting. How would it impact dynamic range though? If you look at the dreadful DR in the H.264, I think a lot of that is due to 8bit compression.

I never saw a big difference in 14 and 12 bits raw in dslr's, photography wise. Probably it makes a bit of a difference if you make extreme corrections. Still 10 bit will be better than the 8 bit H264 and if the contrast is manageable I suppose 10 bit will be pretty good.

  11. Has anyone worked out what the base ISO is on these DNG files?

I seem to be getting less noise at 640/800 - do DNG files naturally have this as their base ISO?

Do dslr's have a base iso at all? There is AD conversion on chip. In photography, the lowest iso is always the 'base' iso and will give the best results in all aspects: dynamic range, noise, etc. Raw on the 5D is basically dslr-raw-files at high speed, right? So the lower the iso, the better it should be.

Please let me know if i'm wrong, I never fully understood this base iso concept :) Just the photography part...

  12. Tomorrow I'm going to try what's possible with a friends 5D2 and 2x and 1.5x anamorphics. Hope to be able to shoot 1280x1080 so I can get 2560x1080!

Just checked, 1280x1080 works and the datarate should be safe. (around 53Mb/s). Don't have my anamorphics here, tomorrow I'll get to shoot!

  13. The 5D3 powers off if the CF card door is opened. So you need to find a solution for that as well.

The speed is not only determined by the media, also the CF card controller in the camera has a maximum. What it is, I don't know. Maybe it can do the full UDMA-7 speed (167MB/s), but that is not guaranteed.

  14. Selling my Proskar Ishico 16 2X. Has some fungus, not in a very great condition, so it can be had cheap.

I never used it much since I have a Kowa B&H 2x, but I think this thing is pretty undervalued. Did some test footage and it looks pretty nice to me. Focus from 1.5 meter without diopters and it is pretty compact/light.

  15. No, I'm not saying that. I'm saying that Photoshop indicates the raw file is 8 bit, but I opened it in another program and it indicates it's actually 14 bit.

Adobe Camera Raw doesn't indicate the bit depth. In the lower part of the screen you see the workflow settings, it is probably at 8 bit by default. That is just the setting used to import the image into Photoshop. You can click it and change it to 16 bit. If you do, the converted raw will be opened as a 16 bit file in photoshop and you can export it to 16 bit tiff for example.

  16. Here are the other anamorphic resolutions for 4:3 and 3:2...

    2x anamorphic from 4:3 (1770x1280) = 3540 x 1280 (2.66:1)

    2x anamorphic from 3:2 (1920x1280) = 3840 x 1280 (3:1)

    1.5x anamorphic from 4:3 (1770x1280) = 2580 x 1280 (2:1)

    1.5x anamorphic from 3:2 (1920x1280) = 2880 x 1280 (2.35:1)

Do those aspect ratios look right? I'm not too sure.

Looks right to me. Shouldn't be hard to calculate, just resize the width to 150% or 200% for a 1,5x or 2x anamorphic lens. Of course there are always variables, like focus distance can change the squeeze ratio with some lenses. But overall, this should be fine.

How flexible are the resolutions on the hack?

Is it possible to make custom resolutions like 1440x1280 or 1270x1080? Those would be good for 2.35:1 with 2x anamorphics.
