APS-C and Super 35mm just went full frame - Metabones Speed Booster
Julian replied to Andrew Reid's topic in Cameras
Yes, it's a language thing... of course it doesn't physically change the lens, but you get exactly the same image you would get with a wider lens. By extender I mean a teleconverter (which also works with the light exiting), which works the same but the other way around. @Richg101: Yes indeed. Extra speed, better quality in theory (downscaling the lens faults) and same dof as on fullframe. Just imagine the exact opposite effects of a 1.4x extender. -

Which means it makes your lens wider... just like an extender makes your lens longer. -
APS-C and Super 35mm just went full frame - Metabones Speed Booster

Buy a Speed Booster + 50mm 1.8 or buy a 35mm f/1.2 without speed booster. They will give the same image characteristics (an image equivalent to 50mm f/1.8 on a fullframe-sensor) An easy way to comprehend what this converter does is just imagining the opposite of an extender/teleconverter. A teleconverter makes your focal lenght longer, you loose light, depth of field and sharpness. The Speed Booster makes your focal length shorter, you win light, dof and sharpness (in theory..). -

It is. This thing saves a shitload of money you'd have to spend on glass and this is the most amazing wide angle solution for MFT... Cheap 50mm f/1.8 = 35mm f/1.2 Cheap 24mm f/2.8 = 17mm f/2 Sigma 20mm f/1.8 = 14mm f/1.2 (drool) -
Panasonic GH3. 1080p60, good codec, sharp, enough DOF, hdmi possible.

Check eBay completed listings. I tried to get one for cheap, it was impossible :) You should be able to get a good price. Sell the body and lens separately if you want to get the most out of it.

With anamorphics the image is only squeezed horizontally, so only the horizontal field of view changes.

Are you serious? (the both of you...) The 1D C isn't even for sale yet, I haven't even seen any proper footage of it.

Great work Andrew. Must have been tons of work. Awesome comparison, many thanks!

Looks nice! I like the grading, except for the crushed blacks. I'd try the same grade but with full details in the shadows. Just look at your histogram/waveform when grading.

By the way.. before killing a RX100, it might be a good idea to try this concept with a random cheap Sony Cybershot compact.

Thanks! 1:29 - 1:47 was shot with the Minolta MD Rokkor 35mm f/2.8. Cost me like 20 euro's on eBay. I particularity like that sequence :) - the close focus capabilities and the way the lens+kowa handles the light. In the first shot you can see there is no vignetting, the sun was behind me. In the next shots I was shooting straight into the light and then the extreme corners light up. I still have a lot of lenses to test with the Kowa. I'm curious how the longer focal lengths will turn out. Anyone got experience with that? I have a 100mm 2.5, 135mm 2.8 and 200mm 3.5 which could be interesting I think.

Panasonic GH3 real-world test (pre-production firmware)
Julian replied to Andrew Reid's topic in Cameras
The D800E has no AA filter.. The GH3 already has. If they will put in a stronger AAfilter that's also going to result in less detail. I kinda doubt that Panasonic will.. Panasonic has been telling reviewers the preproduction firmware is representative of the final version. I'm curious if there will be a visible difference after all. -
Took my Kowa out for a spin today, first time using this lens. I'm pretty pleased with it. The minimum focus distance is very nice, no need for diopters. Most of it is shot with a Minolta MD 35mm f/2.8. You can see vignetting quite often in the corners, bright spots when the sun is in view. I didn't use a ND filter so I was stopping down a lot, that might make things worse. I also used a Minolta 50mm f/1.7 and a 100mm f/2.5.
try a GF2 hacked as a b cam or a GF3 . Im about to do this for some car chaise scenes I have to shoot
No full manual mode makes those a bit difficult to work with.

Try some reasonable force.. Mine also gets a bit 'stuck' when focused on infinity.
-
This correction probably is also different for each focal length. Most distortion will probably be at the wide angle. So if you can work around the lens problem (I'm really curious to see that!) maybe you could find a way to zoom it to 50mm or something, there won't be much correction going on there i suppose. A hack to address these things certainly would help.. :)

Good luck! I'm afraid you'll need it. Realize that the camera probably is going to give an error when you take off the lens. First thing compact cameras do after powering on is check the lens. If its stuck you'll get an error and the camera is useless. Just removing the lens most probably results in the same error.

How is a discussion about Apple vs Windows relevant in a BlackMagic review? Just use what you want, don't try to convince others what they should use or what is 'better'. What does it matter to you anyway if someone else uses something different then you do.. The whole internet is full of Mac vs PC, Android vs iOS etc. I thought on EOSHD I could escape that madness, apparently not :( Anyway, thanks for the BMCC review Andrew. Awesome camera for filmmakers. Dslr-killer for dslr-users who use their camera only for movies. Not so much for the hybrid shooters I think. If the BMCC came in a dslr alike body with reasonable photography features It'd be a no brainer for me.
Did they ever mention how many MP the VG-900 sensor is?
It's exactly the same sensor as in the A99 and RX1, 24MP.
I am guessing, that, there are many opportunities, for start-ups, on sites like Kickstarter, to create a camera, that will bring to the consumers, something, that they really want. Rather than force feeding them, on bullshit.
Is that what consumers really want? We, a bunch of enthusiasts on a very specific video oriented forum, aren't very representative of the market. It's easier to market a list of new features (like wifi) to the big public than a better codec. A bunch of new features doesn't cannibalize your own products. An amazing video optimized canon dslr is kinda out of the question now with their cinema line. 'We' shouldn't expect much from such companies. The big ones play it safe, aim at the mass market, the big numbers, thats where the money is, not in the niche of us filmmakers. Nikon with their consumer oriented mirrorless system, small sensor so it doesn't cut into their dslr market too much. Canon goes kind of the same way, don't expect a high end mirrorless camera anytime soon from them. The only big company that doesn't care much about cannibalisation is Sony. And they are smart not to care, because if they don't cannibalize their own stuff, someone else will. But that might be mainly because Sony is relatively new in the dslr/photography market. People who've been with Canon or Nikon for many years are stubborn and not very likely to switch.
Wow. That would have been amazing.
Yes. It would have been. And all the photographers who don't care about video would have been complaining about the premium price for all this video stuff they don't need. Even if the extra's come in a grip there would have been R&D costs, the processor has to be more powerfull etc...

Panasonic GH3 real-world test (pre-production firmware)
Julian replied to Andrew Reid's topic in Cameras
First: overall I completely agree with you. I also did some clips trying to produce moire and I had much more succes in finding it (in real life situations) than the clip you mention. Yes, it all depends on the situation and moire probably creeps in only with fine details. And yes, this was filmed with the 12-35 X which everyone seems to blame for the moire. But I don't really believe these shots would have no moire with any other lens, unless you would shoot with something really unsharp or at a much wider aperture. -
On the negative note, this also opens the doors to a new era of random cat videos on youtube. Some guys just like shooting doorknobs, corners, porchlights, etc.. Calling it a low light test and seeing how many comments they can get, lol. Like facebook. Vimeo needs a "like" button..
So what? Let people enjoy their hobby. If they don't shoot their cat with a BMCC they'll do it with a 5D Mark III or their iPhone and put it on Vimeo / YouTube as well. A lot of people enjoy buying high end expensive gear. It's good for the economy. At least the cat video's now will have a great dynamic range (and crappy hdr over the top post processing because of the raw capabilities ;)) By the way, Vimeo has a 'Love' button already.
