Do they look the same? I don't watch much, but I saw a trailer of Games of Thrones recently (didn't know what it was, I thought it looked kinda 'funny'.. then I saw the title), it didn't look anything like Homeland or Dexter which I watch both and are shot on Arri Alexa. By the way.. I noticed some moire in Dexter a few episodes ago, must have been the D800.. ;-) It was pretty obvious:

I like the image Stabilisation, the flip screen and the EVF. You get a pretty complete package with this. I have a sample with final firmware avaiable for some time with a Carl Zeiss 24-70mm, I'll try to shoot something soon.

Panasonic GH3 real-world test (pre-production firmware)
Julian replied to Andrew Reid's topic in Cameras
Sharpness -5 looks a bit too unsharp for my taste, so I leave it at -2. But the difference is very subtle. Color at -5 takes out a lot of color, so I'm not sure if it's the best to always have it at -5. Maybe also better to leave it around -3 or -2, so you don't loose to much color information. I have to admit.. I just bought a GH2 second hand. If the GH3 would be actually available right now I might have considered it. I really like it. Going on holidays soon and planning to use it, so I didn't want to wait for the GH3. Also the price difference is big.. Bought the GH2 body for a bit more than 1/3 of the GH3 body price. -
Panasonic GH3 real-world test (pre-production firmware)

Yeah the dynamic range was crushed in the previous video. This one is correct, same as the original files, also the screenshots are correct and in higher contrast. I like the natural profile. Usually I leave sharpness at -2. The difference between -5 and +5 is not that big by the way. Color at -5 is also pretty 'strong', maybe somewhere around -3 or -2 is preferable. -
Panasonic GH3 real-world test (pre-production firmware)

Uploaded the video again, now with correct black levels. I had to export was WMV in Sony Vegas.. at least that didn't crush the blacks. Deleted the old video. -

/Edit: Uploaded new video with correct contrast. Here you go. Not the best test situation, had to go to iso 800 to shoot at f/2.8. Included some footage I shot before as well in the end (with 12-35mm X) Didn't bother to include +5 contrast, probably nobody wants that anyway. I used a 50mm Minolta MD Rokkor f/1.7 @ f/2.8 which I bought for €5 on eBay. You get some free moire included. Safe to say More is not a 12-35mm X only thing. Settings: 1080P MOV ALL-I 72Mbit 25 fps 50mm Minolta MD f/1.7 @ f/2.8 ISO 800 1/50 sec I left out the Custom profile. It just saves one of the other profiles with your contrast/sharpness preferences as a preset. It's not a different profile. Here some HQ Screengrabs straight from Sony Vegas: -
Anamorphic prices are confusing and frustrating. Pretty hard to put a value onto something unless you know every single lens. I've learned from experience... Bought a huge cheap projection lens, but still way to expensive for what it is (absolutely useless). Bought another bit smaller projection lens for more money.. Quality is great, usability isn't. Probably paid more than its worth. Finally I found a Kowa B&H, I think I got it for a pretty good price.. But I have no idea what the actual value is. Oh well, that's life on eBay I guess :)

http://vimeo.com/42252615 This is the footage I mentioned. (Pretty nice short by the way). You should be able to calculate the aspect ratio and see if its cropped or not.
-
I've seen footage with the Moller and a 38mm Pen F lens on the GH2, although I'm not sure if it was cropped. If it wasn't, the 35mm might work. GH2 = 1,86x 38mm = 70,68 35mm on GH3 would be 70mm obviously.

The sensor is 4:3, but in video mode it uses a 16:9 crop. No difference there from the GH2. You can shoot 4:3 with the hacked Gh2 but the quality is limited, mjpeg and 30 fps only.

It's not multi aspect. That just means the cropfactor is actually 2x instead of 1,86x for the GH2 in 16:9 (movie mode). Doesn't make it any more or less suitable for anamorphic use. Maybe you can get away on the GH3 with lenses that would vignette a little bit on the GH2. Overall every lens you use now on the GH2 will be a bit less wide on the GH3. Anamorphic or not.

It gets flatter, but not as flat as cinestyle or log. -
Panasonic GH3 real-world test (pre-production firmware)

Dialing down (or up) the contrast definitely shows significant changes. Not only in the custom mode. I can make a sample video tonight. I see. I'll check the video modes under creative control. I don't expect it to be usefull, the creative mode is probably everything auto. It's just the fancy filter mode. Don't expect the 'high dynamic' mode to be flat, it will probably be very contrasty/over saturated/hdr-lookalike. -

There is no High Dynamic profile. These are the picture profiles: standard/vivid/natural/monochrome/scenery/portrait/custom. -
Just got the press release. €4.150 excluding taxes in Europe.

Bright wide angles don't come cheap, sadly. I think the Samyang / Rokinon 24mm f/1.4 or T1.5 is the cheapest option.
12mm f2 will be delicious on the bmc plse let us have a ef m4/3 adapter!?
Impossible. Te EF mount has a much longer distance from lens to sensor than m43, you cannot make the distance shorter with an adapter. An adapter could be possible but it would need lenses to correct the distance, that makes it kinda pointless (quality loss). That's why a m43 mount BMCC is quite a big deal... Now the BMCC supports Image Stabilisation the Tamron 17-50mm 2.8 or 24-70mm 2.8 might be interesting options if you want to work handheld. Samyang is working on a 10mm prime for aps-c-sensors (non fisheye), could be interesting if you don't want/need zoom.

1. Menu - custom functions - scroll to 4 - set 'constant preview' to 'on'.

Very nice setting and images. I'm not the biggest fan of the LA7200 I think. Corners get a bit soft sometimes, maybe because of a big aperture? Anyway, i'm sure it wouldn't distract me when watching the final movie, the whole setting and feeling look great.

Panasonic GH3 real-world test (pre-production firmware)
Julian replied to Andrew Reid's topic in Cameras
Yes it can, although not at 20 fps. 6 fps just like the mechanical shutter. It's nice for time lapse though and completely silent. -
Well, as long as there are good arguments, it just comes down to personal preferences. Germy can say the GH2 is the best, but if you care for 1080p60 a weather sealed body, audio out and clean hdmi out the GH3 is better... I'd agree on Germy that the GH2 is the best value for money right now.
-
i have to admit the Gh3 might not be the best Right now
What would be the best video dslr right now? A Canon 5D III beats a GH3 in low light for sure and has better dynamic range, but no 1080p60. I'm pretty sure it has less detail in video and it's three times as expensive. Even with the GH3 being twice the price of the GH2, I can't think of anything else that beats it price/performance wise.
This must be US only as Resale Price Maintenance is illegal in the EU.
Is it? Maybe it works in different ways, but it definitely happens in Europe. The best example is Apple, their prices are pretty much fixed everywhere.

To clarify that: If Panasonic wouldn't think it was representative the GH3 wouldn't be send out to big groups of reviewers. It is right now. It is even being used by the public in test events organized by Panasonic in cooperation with magazines. Without any restrictions on publishing the material. Usually when companies send out pre production samples reviewers are not allowed to publish full resolution shots, or there should be clear mentions of the fact that it is preproduction. Anyway, even in those cases, in general the difference in picture quality from preproduction and final production cameras are negligible. Final firmware tuning is mostly about stability etc. It's not realistic to think moire is going to disappear with a firmware upgrade or in a final production camera.

Canon didn't really raise the prices but is going to enforce the Minimum Advertised Prices: http://www.canonrumors.com/2012/11/canons-map-pricing-goes-into-full-effect-today/ That does mean things are getting more expensive though. I doubt canon and the likes will respond to this at all. Not with the current line up I think. Maybe with new products.. But when? The cinema lineup is fairly new..
