Sony has been revealing some nice surprises in recent years, with the A7/7r being a revelation (for photos mainly) for 2013! Let's hope the have enough appetite to keep this going. Canon and Nikon are going nowhere with their DSLR video so I am hoping!

Various sources have told Sony Alpha Rumors that an A7S is coming on Sunday "in Las Vegas". It isn't hard to figure out what is starting in Las Vegas this weekend. If the rumours are true the Sony A7S will be at NAB 2014 - the largest video, broadcast and cinema trade show of the year.

Is Sony about to give us a 'full frame GH4'?

I got it to replace my NEX 5N and 7, but to be honest it could end up replacing my A7R as well.

Speed Booster gives me the full frame look.

The A6000 has much better AF and a much shorter EVF blank-out time when taking stills... like 0.2 sec compared to nearly 1 second on the A7R. Just overall feels much more responsive, smaller and quieter shutter to boot. Of course video quality is miles better too.

If this really does give the same image quality as the D5300 I will seriously consider selling the Nikon and buying one of these.

Great news. Sounds like a perfect cheap solution for both audio stills and video. Im very tempted to buy this and wait for 4K to become mainstream.

Shame it has no mic input... what would be the easiest/cheapest solution for external audio? Something like a zoom recorder and then sync it with the internal audio?

Sony A6000 with Zeiss 50mm F1.4 on Speed Booster

The Sony A600 is the best Sony consumer camera yet for video. A Nikon D5300 in a mirrorless body, with far more features, the image quality is closer to the FS700 in 1080p than to a NEX 7 or A5000. The pristine sharp EVF, a magnified focus assist which can be activated whilst recording (rare!), peaking, zebra, 16:9 screen and of course the mirrorless form factor. This is arguably the best current 'cheap' camera for video, de-throning the GH2 and GH3. At just $650 it is an absolute bargain.

Julian reacted to Sean Cunningham in Some time with the SLR Magic Anamorphot 1.33x - 50
Here's my first compilation of test footage with the SLR Magic Anamorphot.  Even before the lens arrived I knew this would be an upgrade in both performance and functionality coming from the Century Optics 16:9 adapter I'd been using for over a year now but I was anxious to see just how much.    My favorite lens pairing on the Century Optics was my Nikkor 24mm f/2 which, on the GH2, became pleasantly wide instead of feeling more like a normal focal length.  Some folks hate the distortion you get from non-rectilinear lenses once you start getting this short but I love it.  It's a subtle curve that doesn't feel fisheye at all and the anamorphic glass + scope framing just accentuates this quality.  Paired with the GH2 both adapters can go a bit wider, to about 18mm-20mm depending on the lens design, but this Nikkor is the widest prime I currently own.   On the Century Optics if I needed infinity focus I also got soft, chromatic edges regardless of stop with the Nikkor.  This isn't always an unattractive quality and more than once I've read reputable DPs giggle over their choice to shoot on some vintage set of anamorphics *because of* their soft, soft-edged, chromatic character.  One man's lens with character is another man's junk lens.  Anyway, if I didn't need infinity focus then slapping on my Tokina +.4 achromat provided good, sharpenened up footage mostly free of chromatic effects.  The SLR Magic Anamorphot, on the other hand, doesn't need any extra help.  It's sharper at f/2.8 on my Nikkor 24mm than the Century Optics at this stop with or without the Tokina doublet, doesn't go soft at the edges and doesn't go all chromatic either.   Where I really felt the limits of the Century Optics adapter was anything above 24mm.  For straight 16:9 shooting I loved the look of my F.Zuiko 50mm f/1.8 even though it's a bit soft and exhibits coma wide open because most of its faults are hidden from the GH2.  To get soft but still *maybe* useful footage with the 50mm on the Century Optics I'd have to be at f/4 though I really needed to be more like f/5.6 which is decidedly not "bokehlicious".   Stacking diopters let me open it up but with a serious restriction on range.  With the SLR Magic Anamorphot I could happily shoot at f/2.8 on the 50mm thanks to its close-focus system which behaves like a built-in variable diopter.     Speaking of, SLR Magic decided to also produce a new line of high quality achromats as a set (+1.3 and +.33).  Where diopters are an absolute necessity with the Century Optics and LA 7200 adapters they're totally optional on the SLR Magic Anamorphot.  They become more of an aesthetic choice for further enhancing bokeh in close-up photography, enhancing its stretched quality.   SLR Magic rates the Anamorphot as sharp on lenses in the range I shot at as wide as f/2.8 though YMMV depending on the complexity of the lens design.  Some lenses have been shown to perform even better than the ratings provided by SLR Magic.  For the sake of this test footage I kept generally to the f/2.8 - f/4 range, which I anticipate will be my preferred spread of stops for shooting with the lens though for anything serious this will require a 1st AC to pull focus.  A few daylight exteriors are likely shot at f/5.6 but I only went further stopped down, to f/8, on one comparison shot against the Century Optics adapter.

Would help if they were actually available in Europe/USA, and if they did some marketing/support in those regions. Right now if you want to know something about those camera's you have to read it on EOSHD, instead of finding it on their own website. Right now I can't even reach the website. This kinda makes me feel they aren't really interested in those markets, probably they can sell enough in China for now anyway. They seem to have the product to make a big worldwide boom, maybe not the manpower/production capability.

Anyway, 6K raw must be hell to work with. Even at 2:1 compression, what kinda datarates are we talking here? At least 225MB/s = 13GB/minute I suppose?

We just shot this video with the BMCC, Metabones Speedbooster, Nikon Lenses and Iscorama 54MC.
RAW files were developped in After Effects CS6 (with Camera Raw) to Prores444 2400/1350. Color grading was done in AE.

Please let us know what you think, we'd love to get some feedback.

You will never get a decent anamorphic with character and decent build for that low. The Trump alone (not being anamorphic) is quite a bit more then that. you are probably looking more at the $2000USD- $5000USD which is still a bargain in my mind. You get a lomo or Bolex Moller look in a new design...for well under 10K and wow

Did they not even ask about Magic Lantern?  It'd be useful to publish a list of  "questions we asked that they outright refused to answer..." since those can be a bigger scoop than the softballs they did answer.

And citing the EF-M 11-22 as an example of lens innovation?  A lens they won't even sell in the United States for some reason?  How about the obvious follow up "so why aren't you selling that lens worldwide if it's so great"?  Baffling.

How are people reaching the conclusion that the AX100's image is better than the GH4?

First mistake is to judge it from YouTube!

Second mistake is to judge it from marketing videos!

Third mistake is to compare from different shoots! With different amounts of talent behind the camera!

Final mistake is to forget about the lens! Will the AX100 look the same as a GH4 with a PL adapter and Cooke cinema lenses? NO! Indeed will the AX100 at F2.8 or F4 look like the GH4 with a Voigtlander 25mm F0.95 attached? That lens on the AX100 is sterile, no life.

Also I'm expecting the GH4 to be way ahead of the AX100 in low light. 16MP on a larger 2.0x sensor vs 20MP on a 2.7x crop one. Maximum aperture on the AX100 is F2.8, max aperture on the GH4 is F0.90 with Speed Booster.

The AX100 is a camcorder and it will look like a camcorder, but in 4K. Like the same sensor in the RX10 and RX100 yes it can do nice images and I am not writing it off, but got to compare like to like. It is not an interchangeable lens cinema camera and you will not be getting a Super 35mm look from it with that zoom lens.

I have to admit I was a bit sceptical about this idea. But my first experiences on CreativeCrit so far are great! I saw some interesting work made by a member that probably wouldn't have caught my attention here, and got helpful feedback on a video I posted!

This might work really well as long as there is a group of people willing to share their feedback and help each other out.

I do agree something like this is needed at EOSHD as well. I love to talk about ideas and get inspiration from people for shoots. My recent shoot at the Aeropark would not have happened without Lars telling me about the location and I've done a shoot at Crosby beach with a 80-200mm F2.8 based on James Miller's stunning Brighton beach footage shot with the Production Camera.

Julian reacted to rygenova in New Sony 4K camera teased, source describes it as 'F55 in DSLR body'
Curious as to whether this thing will be prohibitively expensive or how much Sony will cripple it in order to sell it at a more affordable price point.

If it is in the $10,000+ price range and not crippled, what really differentiates it from an F5?

Probably way too much to ask for, but I'm hoping for "F55 quality" 10-bit internal 4K  with all the pro connections (XLR, SDI, etc) stripped off to lower the cost in a DSLR body for around $5K.  With the Blackmagic 4K cam and GH4 at much lower price points and similar specs, I don't think it's unrealistic, but I doubt Sony would do it.  Could create a big market for Sony FZ, FE, and A mount lenses though.

I'd love to see what the new Sony 55 f/1.8 is capable of on a great camera.
