    Why did you pixelate your espresso on the right??

    The SLR anamorphic looks very promising. Probably will ditch most of my old projection lenses for this, if the quality is good. Would love to see some samples with the 5D III + 50mm fullframe combo.

    Here are some x-ray pictures of Hawk and Lomo anamorphic lenses. That can maybe help you to see more whats going on there. :)

    I kind of get the idea there is more to it then just laziness on their part. They must grasp the simple fact that they would sell some more camera's to another audience if they'd include 25p/24p. And it can't be that much work.

    Is it some kind of agreement with Panasonic to leave the video features to them in return for some favor by them? Just a conspiracy theory... but I find it hard to believe it's something they simply 'overlook' every time.

    I would like a multicoated version offered, with very suppressed flares,  or a removable filter that has multicoat to suppress them.

    The idea that Chinese companies just steal designs and products is rather dated I think. Some do, many do not. Also, all the R&D in the world will do nothing if the thing can't be made, the relationship here is symbiotic.

    I think 15mm aluminium tubes, baseplates and so on have been around forever too... the pricing of some-such rigs is obscene and unjustifiable. Claiming R&D on those is not defensible.

    The listing of anamorphic is an error, or it might be for an isolated part of the film because this is, like Tree of Life, a mixed media film.  But the primary process used is spherical 35mm with some sequences shot in 65mm.

    Deep focus, using wide primes and shooting at optimal times of the day are part of his dogma for the last two films.  He uses steadicam but a lot of the BTS shots of the cameraman that I saw had him in an Easyrig, or equivalent.  It's not actually a stabilizer so that could account for glitches in the movement.

    He used a lot of locals.  Locations were scouted, particularly interiors, for how natural light played throughout the day.  It's an available and practical light film.  They didn't use movie lights.

    http://www.theasc.com/ac_magazine/April2013/TotheWonder/page1.php

    ...they occasionally used some bounce but in every scene they placed actors relative to natural light or practical lights and it's just that beautiful.

    OK, Julian, you talked me into buying the DVD... and you were right: absolutely gorgeous!   Abstract anamorphic compositions and shallow depth of field combined with naturalistic lighting schemes to make a thoroughly convincing universe.  This worked really well with the rambling and very realistic dialog...

    I couldn't help thinking that it would have been better set in the 70's, though.  The costumes, set design, choice of cars, etc. all screamed 70's.  But then all the 2008 election stuff in blaring on the soundtrack at all times which was strangely anachronistic.  It seemed as if the director wanted to place the movie in 70's era Boston, but budgetary limitations forced him to go with contemporary New Orleans, so then he decided to update the story to parallel the election and financial crisis at the last minute...

    I must admit I like to work faster than a projector lens allows, and am not willing to pay Iscorama prices, so any focus-through adaptor that's quick has my interest for when I want this look.

    Voigtlander Noktons are not very small..

    What about SB + new dslr lenses (the smaller one, for APS-C not FF)? Not sure, but looks like cheaper alternative:
    Sigma 30mm/1.4    -->   21mm/1.0
    any 50mm/1.4        -->   36mm/1.0
    Samyang 16mm/2  -->   11mm/1.4  (big, but fast wide)

    It's cheaper than Noktons and with 2 adapters (SB and regular) you get 6 focal lengths with 3 primes.

    For example:
    Nokton 17.5mm(1150$) + 25mm(1000$)  = 2150$
    = 17.5mm/0.95 + 25mm/0.95

    Example above set:
    SB(430$) + Sigma 30mm(500$) + Nikon 50mm(400$) + Samyang 16mm(480$) = 1810$
    [+ regular adapter] = 11mm/1.4 + 16mm/2 + 21mm/1.0 + 30mm/1.4 + 36mm/1.0 + 50mm/1.4

    Just watched it.  Freakin' loved it.  This so didn't look like a contemporary film.  The only shots that didn't work for me were some of the process shots where it was obvious to me that Brad Pitt was shot against a greenscreen looking out the car window.

    This film, like Fight Club, maintained a fairly consistent shooting stop regardless of day or night, interior or exterior, within ~.6 of a stop between the two films but the dogma is much more noticeable here because anamorphic.  This had such practical benefits with respect to lighting the scenes with economy, achieving naturalism while still being interesting and often beautiful to look at.

    Totally works for me.  This, like the other, is a character driven film and it focuses the eye on the character, giving only an impressionistic view of the world they're inhabiting (in the case of Fight Club one that is, like Fincher purposely did with Se7en, never named).

    Loved the car door shot.

    Recently bought these parts and it works nice. Can't get it any cheaper than this probably and the quality isn't bad at all.
