That's a pretty good point about storage. For that $300 on CineForm you're saving 90% on storage costs.

    7D users...

Next logical step for 7D users I think is to get a 2nd body, a 50D. Then you can use your EFS lenses on it and try out raw, see if it is for you, then if you feel it is working out, later upgrade to the 5D Mark III. There's no point holding out indefinitely for a 7D version of raw recording as the quality is unlikely to be any better than the 50D.

I had the pleasure of testing the new Sigma 18-35mm f/1.8 DC HSM Art (on a Canon 100D...).
Focussed on photography, but the results are amazing. Even at f/1.8 it is really sharp, I'm sure it will even beat many primes. It's pretty crazy actually!

ML isn't taking donations, but a developer requested a 50D. I bought a 50D + Battery Grip + batteries yesterday for a good price and I shipped it today. I'm hoping we can split the costs... If you want to donate to me, send me a PM and I'll give you the details.

Julian reacted to ergopossum in Mounting the Bolex Moller 16/32/1.5x
I recently shot a teaser video for a feature film I'm developing. I'm aiming for a slightly analog look so I've been using AIS Nikkor lenses with the Bolex Moller 16/32/1.5x adapter lens mounted to them. The Bolex has a 39mm filter thread on the back, so I'm able to attach it with a simple 39mm to 52mm ring. However, the only way I can align the anamorphic lens with this adapter is by keeping the filter thread screwed slightly loose, and rotating it to the right alignment, then sticking it in place with a thin strip of tape.

This works alright, but I'd like to figure out something more stable for purpose of a feature film. I've looked fairly extensively at the clamps available online, but I can't find anything (Redstan or otherwise) that is specifically tailored to fit the somewhat atypically shallow rear element of this lens, and I wondered if anybody else has had experience with this? I just need a solution that won't add a very substantial amount of length/vignetting to the lens, and will allow me to lock its alignment down. The tape solution results in slight, noticeable shifting around every time we refocus the lens.

    Thank you!

Here's the teaser, shot it on an NEX-5n with the aforementioned lenses. Looking into filming the feature on a C300 or a Scarlet.

Will post a link to video as soon as MTV releases it.  Until then, enjoy the blog!

Thanks for posting this video test. Pretty comprehensive. I didn't even know the 50D before these latest developments. Looks like a great companion to my 5D mkII and mkIII. My issue with the 5Ds is the times when you need a longer DOF. I have considered the 7D, but spent that money elsewhere (on Rokinon cine primes), wondering whether a Rebel would suffice. I deliberated on the 50D for 24 hrs before ordering one on eBay used for $400.

With all the hoopla on raw video, I bought a BMCC in March but sold it a month later. It was far from versatile, had very limited functionality and if you weren't committed to the raw workflow, shooting ProRes wasn't enough to make it worth it's limitations (not to mention the 2.4 crop factor with EF lenses). And low light capability was not good either, making slower zoom lenses useless without good lighting indoors. Rigging it up was gonna drain my wallet even more. Their new models were just announced and I wanted it out the door before losing too much $$. I kept Resolve though. I guess I sensed that other developments would open up the options for RAW shooting, but did not expect this one on an old model Canon.

But man... this storage factor is not insignificant. My next significant investment.

I't s such a shame that there is no 1 cpu  1.6x crop Canon body with a compacth Flash slot. This Art Zoom Sigma and say 60D with a CF slot would make for amazing RAW video combination. Atm a speedbooster + blackmagic camera seems like the best option for the lens in video use.

Indeed. the funny thing about this whole ordeal is ... What on earth will canon release next. I mean for instance do they think they can just do minimal video feature upgrades and sell alot. Will they try to make hardware locks for future cameras or provide even better hacker friendly products. Say 5D mark IV with 2  Sata III ports.. ;)

OK. Did you have a chance to see if the video files are seamless? In other words, is there a time gap between the files?

Never mind. No way to know until the DNGs can be extracted.
