  1. So I took advantage of the crazy deal here in Switzerland and apparently I got one of the last ones. I have a question regarding 4k vs uhd. From what I gathered online 4k apparently has a little less rolling shutter than uhd, but uhd is supposed to be a little sharper. I tested both and I can't tell the difference in image quality. They both have the same horizontal FOV, uhd having more room in the height. Uhd also has more height framing adjustments possibilities if you crop to 2.35:1. Since there is no horizontal FOV gain with the 4k mode, I don't see the advantage of shooting 4k over uhd? I could not tell visually that the image was higher res as well. appreciate some input on this thanks
  2. The electronic variable ND is amazing, even more so with the future auto mode. Couldn't get any better. I have mixed feelings about the future compressed raw update though. It could finally deliver the image quality you would expect to get in 2016, but then it adds thousands of dollars for the external recorder + ssds to the already far from cheap price. And it hurts the lightweight compact ergonomics of the camera which is one of the major selling points to begin with. Fixing the internal quality codecs should be their first priority imo. Keeping an eye on this camera will see how it works out.
  3. This crippling of cameras capabilities on purpose is getting really ridiculous and insulting. We know how much of a scam it really is since the 2009 mark II is 14 bit raw capable thanks to magic lantern, - The gh2 capable of much higher quality compressions thanks to the hack. - The sony F5 internal 4k capability with a simple line change edit in the config text file. I'm under the impression we have come to a point in camera technology where the entry line cameras are fully capable of producing at least 4:2:2 color, possibly at 10bit depth and definitively with higher quality compressions. Problem is with this level of image quality the enormous price jump of the high end cameras would be hard to justify even with raw formats. They just have to mess up the cheaper ones somehow. Since blackmagic strategy is to offer the most features at the best price to compete with the market, and they don't have such a crowded product line to have to apply this product segmentation garbage I believe they are a good comparison: Ursa mini $4,995 Sony fs5 $5,599.00 ProRes XQ 4:4:4 - 250 MB/s XAVC Long 4:2:0 - 100Mb/s with macro blocking nightmare It's 2016, you pay 5'600usd for macroblocked 4:2:0 8 bit. Come on now.
  4. Is there a legit reason that holds them back from providing at least 4k 8bit 4:2:2 or 4k 10 bit 4:2:2 ? Aside from purposely crippling the camera for their commercial product line marketing segmentation purposes. Hasn't slog shown it's limitation with banding in the sky in 8 bit anyways? I find it ridiculous that they release a 5'600usd camera in 2015 with 8bit 4:2:0 I'm keeping an eye on this camera for the raw option though, the ergonomics are definitively appealing.
  5. ursa mini weight is 5lbs, red weapon is 3.3lbs and it is said that the Raven will be lighter weapons bare body is much smaller than the ursa mini bare body, much more compact and better suited for movi type stabilizers. image quality wise I would be surprised if the new 4.6k ursa sensor performs better than the red dragon sensor but wait and see. but the price of a working red raven package will likely be at least twice that of a ursa mini 4.6k though.
  6. big news today: - form factor is weapon sized, smaller than scarlet dragon - lightest of all their cameras ever made - redcode at 5:1 compression - dragon sensor "a bit shy of Academy 35mm and APS-C. All your APS-C / S35 lenses should cover." - canon ef mount with electronic control - sub 10k price now is sub 10k for the body with ssd module included, I would assume so but we will find out friday.
  7. news: body is metal, there is a microphone built in behind the ribs, and it is lighter and we already know it shoots 4k at 120fps. 6 days to go.
  8. same here. really not into skulls as well. People are suggesting that the wings on the new logo are an indication that the camera is drone friendly. Which would mean movi type stabilizers friendly as welI. Did not have a problem working with the current reds on the movi but if it's even lighter and smaller then great. it is a possibility that they are rehousing all the mx sensors they traded back in with their upgrade path to dragon. if that is the case I would assume they would ship fast. I do hope it's a crippled dragon sensor though, just for the increase in dynamic range.
  9. Official announcement next friday the 25th. Teasing will go on until then but all should be revealed on that day.
  10. a picture is worth a thousand words, see at 2:35. No pixel peeping here, the difference between footage you can't even use and one that you actually can. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gI1ax3oxaBc&list=PLS2LAanbn_vVXv1u_UtgcJVychnEWi9zG And there really isn't any point in arguing how much more industry proven and feature film used the reds are over the bm. It's not even comparable. And again I am no blackmagic hater, will be very happy to buy from them as soon as they are reliable.
  11. the reason there is no difference is because you are using a grayscale image so there is only luma information in your image so nothing gets subsampled. It is the foundation of how chroma subsampling works: "Chroma subsampling is the practice of encoding images by implementing less resolution for chroma information than for luma information, taking advantage of the human visual system's lower acuity for color differences than for luminance" only color information gets discarded when using chroma subsampling, in your images there is none. 4:2:0 4:2:2 4:4:4 ^ first number is the luma component, as you can see there is no reduction no matter the chroma subsampling.
  12. So it's named Raven. still no specs nor price for now.
  13. I would LOVE for the Ursa mini 4.6k to be a great camera and I would buy it if that is the case. However I keep reading over and over again complaints about corrupt files, camera crashes, fixed pattern noise unusable images, and overall unreliability of the bm cameras that I have zero expectations. Now we are talking red, industry proven cameras with amazing R3D format, yes the accessories will be expensive, but they might actually deliver a reliable workhouse in the price range that blackmagic has over hyped and failed over and over again due to severe issues on all models. Like you guys said it will come down to what an actual working package will cost, but this is seriously interesting news.
  14. 8 bit jpeg off the highest dynamic range dslr sensor available, thus why they look good. And I did say give us "better dynamic range" not only higher color sampling and more bit depth. I'd take a high dynamic range 1080p image over a poor DR 4k one anyday. but to each his own.
  15. yeah well if they could get into a dynamic range and color depth war that would be great thanks. can't wait to get my compressed 8k 4:2:0 8 bit image. so exciting.
  16. 100% on point. And why 4k does not matter if it comes with those flaws. High dynamic range is the number 1 feature of a film image to me. And this is the number 1 feature that has separated film from digital video since the beginning, only recently are digital cameras catching up dr wise. Grain does not matter at all. It will not make an image filmic, slap film grain on video footage and it still looks like video. On a side note, I believe the current high detail level that the 4k+ cameras record can be conflicting to some with the 2k cinema film look that we are used to. This high level of detail looks closer to the over-sharpened tv video images, rather than to what we were used to see in theaters. I believe the negative reaction of some to the revenant trailer may be influenced by that. What Axel said about it looking like go pro footage is an intelligent remark. We must keep in mind that our visual references are always changing. So if we have been flooded with wide angle go pro footage for some time now, it is to be expected that we associate similar looking shots of the revenant to that visual reference. To me the revenant images are beautiful and look like film, only very high detail film, something I need to get used to. All of this is changing fast, all the cinemas in my town are already equipped with 4k digital projectors, most new movies are shot in 4k+. And consumers cameras dynamic range is getting better, even cell phones have hdr now. So this technical line is already getting blurred and it will become irrelevant with time. All that will be left is your job as a cinematographer, location choice, clothing style and color choice, lighting choice and grading decisions to support your story. Gear wise though, if I want to shoot a movie with a film look image, I will choose the highest DR camera.
  17. I'm keeping an eye on that camera as well, hoping the issues are gone with the new sensor but with zero expectations. blackmagic has never released any camera on time, always with severe issues, all cameras with black spot on sun and fixed pattern noise without bothering to fix it between camera releases. worst company to preoder from. but if the new sensor fixes those issues it's gonna be a great camera, so we can always hope
  18. Interested in this camera as well. Can you guys share the best looking footage you have seen shot with this camera? I've been doing searches but not easy to find that much
  19. interesting budget camera and even more so with the speed booster combo. looking forward to the footage to see what the dynamic range is like. 4k or not, speedbooster or not, if the dynamic range is not good the footage will not be.
  20. cheers Panasonic that is awesome looking forward to see what Vlog will bring to the table
  21. Hello everyone, Here is a making of and photoshop breakdown of my latest advertising campaign: It's a photo campaign, but I'm sure most of you either work in, or enjoy photography as well so hopefully you will find this of interest. thanks for watching
  22. why do we get more of the environment on the top of the 16:9 crop compared to the 4:3? shouldn't it be the opposite? looks like it is just cropping in the 16:9 image without increasing the height of the captured image?
