fantastic work from the magic lantern team congrats! Shows how much of an effort canon has being doing in selling the weakest technology possible to the highest price possible. And let's not forget how they blatantly lied saying the mark III was not capable of clean out hdmi only to provide it via firmware later on. I suppose the 1DC is better equipped for video than the mark III with a faster buffer and better heat management? Could turn into a decent camera with this hack. Anyways in the end this will bring money to Canon that they do not deserve.

Hello everyone, some of you might remember me from my gh2 journey thread. (videos still up on my vimeo channel)   I am now happy to announce that I have sold it to move to better things, currently the red one mx. :-)   Here is one of the first video I just shot 2 days ago.   http://vimeo.com/65894275   I am still learning and teaching myself. I shot this in sunlight with no light modifier what so ever, no reflector and no diffusion. @ Jason : a couple months ago I would have said gh2 without a hesitation. As of today with the release of clean hdmi output and what magic lantern is developing with their firmware the decision could be harder.   Gh2 advantages and cons are well documented.   Look into the mark III clean hdmi out and what it can bring with an external recorder such as the ninja. Look into what magic lantern has brought to the table and what they are working on. Consider that the mark III delivers much better photographs than the gh2. You can use it on a professional photo assignment, gh2 not.   I would tell you if the latest regarding the mark III is worth your time but I have not looked much into it just read a couple bits here and there.

  no not even close sorry.   It is a good example of how important the dp is on a shoot and how much of a difference he can make. Great work on his side for sure.   But it is also a good example of the limitation of such cameras, blown highlights, poor colors etc.

  I am also a little confused by this. I think they said that in regards to the previous line of the article,which states that a 64gb ssd is filled up in 15min. Could simply use a higher capacity one then. If anyone wants to clear this up I am all ears too.

  this is why I am completely uninterested by this. So far they have only been a hype company, announcing spec/price interesting (with issues) cameras one after the other but never delivering. Can't believe they have the guts to announce a new camera when they still have not delivered on the original version yet the mft one.   The one thing I like about this company is that they put pressure on the others. That's it. The pocket cinema camera is very cool on paper though and is what the gh3 should have been.   Now if they start to deliver, great. But so far zzzzzZZZZZzzzzz

Regardless of the content discussion which I also found to be weak, and I disliked the dwarfs which I all found uninteresting and simplistic as characters as well.   HFR makes a big difference in 3d. Especially in the action scenes. You don't have the muddy unreadable motion that you get from action scene in 24fps 3d. The other scenes were also more readable and had more depth in 3d to me. So it definitively improves the 3d experience. There still is a lot of work to be done on those 3d projections to make them more convincing and more enjoyable to watch but definitively an improvement.   Now the hd television look is very present and distracting at the beginning of the film but I did get used to it with time. I also found that the cheap glowing effects and over saturated colors in a couple of shots made it look like next gen video games. But the photography and post is to blame here not the frame rate.   I have to see more films shot in this fashion but it could be the right direction to take for certain films in 3d. Definitively not worth loosing the visual appeal of conventional filming though, especially for drama which will lose a lot of emotion and immersion with this technique I believe. But I do think it will have its place on 3D action films.

I would assume the production value of the sets, make up and costumes is very high on this film if not among the best of the industry. And we all now how good weta is at cgi. So I guess if there is anything to blame on the "tv look" it has everything to do with the frame rate and nothing else.   Also I'm not sure it is something "we will get used to". Because I don't think tv will lower frame rates or lose oversharp hd pictures anytime soon so anything that looks like that will look like tv to us.   I need to see it for myself to make judgment but just because it's new doesn't mean it is better. Have to give credit to Peter Jackson for trying new things and trying to make the craft evolve though.

To her defense she tested all of the main cameras herself so her opinion is based on her personal experience so there is nothing to argue about. I also disagree though. Regarding the colorist, the delta outputs uncompressed raw. So keep in mind that "contrasted" is in comparison to the f65 raw file. If I understood his thought process correctly he said the image is closer to what the scene actually was which took the guess work out of overly flat raw files. Hello everyone, I was lucky to take part in a two days digital cinema workshop presented by Marquise technologies and Free Studio in Geneva. I will not try to relay all the information we received in this thread as I am not qualified and it would be a daunting task, but I will rather give you my thoughts on the workshop and give you a little wrap up of the event. Special guests were Jean-Piere Beauviala founder of Aaton and DP Caroline Champetier (holy motors). It also included a shootout between the following cameras that we compared on the second day from the dcp files in a movie theater: Red epic, Arri Alexa, Sony F65 and Aaton Delta [img]http://www.freeimagehosting.net/newuploads/alh7g.jpg[/img] [img]http://www.freeimagehosting.net/newuploads/u9qde.jpg[/img] The first thing that surprised me was how big the F65 was. I did not tape measure them but I felt size wise from smallest to biggest was like this: red epic, arri alexa, AAton Delta, Sony F65 Here another view of the fully equiped Sony beast: [img]http://www.freeimagehosting.net/newuploads/a3qc9.jpg[/img] Each camera was presented to us and when discussing their features the most intriguing one was the Delta. A couple things separate it from the others: - An optical viewfinder, - a very big ventilator to reduce sound emission - integrated ssd recorder (4 of them stacked up in raid 0) non proprietary you can use the brand of your choice - a little screen on the other side of the camera with the basic info so you can check them on both sides - mechanical rotating mirror shutter - the sensor that physically moves from half a pixel during recording more info here: [url="http://nofilmschool.com/2012/10/aatons-penelope-delta-camera/"]http://nofilmschool....e-delta-camera/[/url] The last feature was the most interesting one but we could sadly not see it in action as the prototype camera did not feature it yet. According to the founder of Aaton, the variation in the image this shift produces forces our brain to stay more focused on the images. Which adds up to an odd ratio of 8192 by 2160 pixels even though the final aspect ratio is 17:9 close to 2:1. The skin tones and color rendition are terrible in her opinion. She says that that camera is a very good television camera but definitively not a cinema camera. I was quite surprised at how categorical she was on the Alexa because of how good Skyfall looked to me. So I was looking forward to seeing that "television" camera compared in the theater on the next day. But it was no fair fight. They received a faulty Gemini so they had to record prores instead of raw on the Alexa. And it showed. In theater camera comparison: [img]http://www.freeimagehosting.net/newuploads/7qnai.jpg[/img] [img]http://www.freeimagehosting.net/newuploads/45taz.jpg[/img] The subject is very subjective of course but there are a couple things that showed clearly and are not subjective: - On one of the shots with half of a wooden box in the shade, the Alexa and Epic showed no information what so ever, pure black. On the Delta and F65 the wood texture and details were clearly visible, a big difference in visible dynamic range there. Now of course on the epic you would be able to pull some info from the blacks. But straight out of the cam was pure black. - ProRes is not good enough for cinema. It looked very bad. The colors on the girl skin tones and hair were very weak and the clouds looked really muddy. You could really tell the difference. Wish they had shot with ArriRaw so that it would have been more fair. - The Aaton displayed a very smooth gradation between shades of grey. Not a huge difference with the f65, but it was very smooth. Now the rest is subjective: In my opinion there was two groups, the bottom group with the alexa (sadly ProRes) and the Epic. And the top group with the Delta and F65. The F65 red haired woman shot was simply superb! The skintones and hair color and detail rendition were amazing. The Delta delivered a more contrasted image which I liked less. Interestingly the colorist that was presenting the shots said he would rather grade a more contrasted shot like the Delta instead of having to add contrast and the guess work that comes with it like on the f65. (The sony was shifting towards yellow in the highlights a bit) The camera that delivered the most complete and appealing image to me was the F65. But when discussing this with the other attendees as you would expect everybody had a different favorite. All in all it was a very fascinating workshop. I did have the opportunity to test it myself, as far as build quality definitively much improved and the lcd was nice indeed. I'll wait for final production models and Andrews final review out of curiosity but this cam is off my wish list personally.

I recently finished a video interview assignment that would have payed off at least the body entirely. A couple assignments and your cinema camera is payed off, that is something to consider. It's not 25k anymore, with the current price it makes more sense to me to buy than rent, at the moment on a couple days shoot you will pay more in rental than the cams sale worth.

thank you Andrew for taking the time to respond in detail very interesting read I love this board :) I hope you won't mind I still don't agree with you though. - same or more detail? great. nothing to say there. I'd like to see it though. - 60 frame per second isn't very slow motion to me I don't think it was too much to expect more. - Smoother gradation better color and less banding sounds good, would like to see it. - improved lcd sure, but most people use an external monitor anyways - more reliable than the hack, okay fair enough even though mine never crashed. The rest you listed is fine but nothing major or significant to me. It's like a more reliable hacked gh2 basically. Also some gh3 footage showed the iso bug with dark parts flashing is still there. To me a fair upgrade would have been 120fps or 2k resolution or 10 bit 4:2:2 or much better usable in post dynamic range. One of these things would have been a significant upgrade and not a more polished gh2 with sadly newly introduced moire and aliasing. Not improved enough video wise to me.
