Looks like they don't have as many blind brand loyal fanboys as they thought they did. It is only fair they fail miserably with the products they released. Nowadays with blogs like eoshd people are way too educated to be played with like they hoped. Too bad they messed up their new product line considering all the quality glass they manufacture.
I don't think we can conclude that until all picture profiles are explored.
True. I did swap through them and felt like the custom one with contrast set to the minimum should be the best in that aspect but too soon to say indeed.
Thanks for clarifying Karim. I still think something is somehow off due to the fact I have never seen my GH2 alias the way the hacked GH2 and GH3 look in your comparison. This may be somehow due to how Media Player is decoding the F4V files (which I never use). Tough to say for sure... and thanks for all your efforts, please don't take my concern as an attack upon you in any way.
Your critique was very welcome. And most importantly absolutely true, just had false assumptions on me but they are justified based on what content we usually get online. Most people on this boards are way more knowledgeable than I am and I am here to learn and share. I have no business being here if your intelligent argument was an issue for me. So no worries and quite the contrary thanks for contributing
I would recommend trying a sharpness test with both cameras set at 0, rather than -2 and -5. We don't know if the GH2 and GH3 are artificially softening the image at the lowest value or just removing all in-camera sharpening altogether. Comparing both at 0 should increase the liklihood of a fair comparison (no softening or sharpening) assuming Pansonics implementation methodology has not changed.
Interesting approach and worth trying out. I am the first to say that it was a limited test and the best I could do with the constraints that I had. I clearly stated that. So not necessarily the most flattering or revealing nor accurate test. What's the point then you may rightfully ask? Well for instance, if the gh3 really had a new high dynamic range sensor, that would have been clearly visible even when shooting handheld in a rush. But it is not. So it is definitively revealing and useful in that aspect for example.
@MaxAperture, steady on, Karim has already said he'll post the native camera files, I too have no interest discussing 'tests', so many variables in every respect can skew, but he's prepared to spend time shooting and providing, lets not bite the hand that feeds. Do we need images repeatedly requoted from a post or two above, really.
Thank you and in case you missed it the link has been provided in the original post He has very true good points but they just don't apply with what I provided
You cropped the footage and used image stabilization, this changes the pixel scaling when it is rendered back out in the final comp and causes aliasing artifacts. This was meant as a response to jgharding's freak out, and is what you see on the rims of the glasses in both camera's footage. To be honest, I'm getting a bit tired of watching poorly implemented comparisons that end up promoting myths about this camera's image quality. If you don't have the time to do a proper comparison with a tripod and have to rely on warp stabilization just to compare the shots, you're really not doing anyone a service because the footage is not representative of true pixel-pixel output quality. It's just muddys the water further and leads to more confusion.
No............... This would be very true if relevant but it is not. I did not use wrap stabilization. Only tracked the footage and moved it along the x and y axis which does not deform pixels. Also I did not crop the footage but only masked the area I did not want. And finally the raw footage straight out the camera is available for download so there is no room for misinformation.
Strange: 1. When recording motion picture no ETC (Extra Tele Conversion) ... what???? Mentioned here: http://www.freeimagehosting.net/ipsgx
did not pay attention to that Talk about loosing a very interesting feature... could come with a firmware update maybe?

Looks great as usual but I'm tired of seeing other peoples footage. I want to shoot my own. Tired of waiting on them...
Thanks for doing this, Karim.
You are very welcome, I just wish I could have done it with much more care. From my tests the gh2 (on the left) has more detail and sharpness than the gh3. But to be fair that should be tested more carefully than handheld at a low aperture. But all the vids I have seen so far including mine seem to indicate that the gh2 has more detail
The additional noise viewed in the GH3 footage is likely as a result of lifting the exposure to match the GH2 in post... when you increase the gain of any signal you increase the visibility of noise. The aliasing visible in both shots is obviously from rescaling the footage in the NLE. Both cameras look good and very comparable, although I have noticed that the GH3 has less of a shift towards greenish-yellow tint than the GH2 which adds a bit more warmth to the image overall. I would say the color is closer to Canon now, but this could also be as a result of the custom picture profile that was used in this test.
what do you mean rescaling the footage NLE? I did not rescale anything. what is a NLE?

uploaded the dynamic range video see original post at the top of the thread ^
Is there any chance of just providing the native camera files for this?
yes but I warn you the footage is very shaky this why I stabilized it. Let me upload my dynamic range video and I will share the raw files.
Karim, what lens was used in this test... same on both cameras?
yes and actually it is the exact same lens which I mounted on each camera one after the other. It is the voigtlander 25mm f.95 as mentioned in the first frame of the video I'm rendering the dynamic range video will be back in a couple of minutes with an update

Something I am wondering. Let's assume the gh3 is only just as good as the hacked gh2. Would a hacked gh3 show the same increase in quality as the hacked gh2? Because 72mbps is already quite high of a bitrate isn't it, how much room for improvement from a possible hack there really is?
-
Feel free to download to video file Mirrorkisser. All of the settings are displayed there. The GH3 was a preproduction model with 0.5 firmware though.

Hello so I compared the poor quality footage I was able to quickly shoot during the GH3 presentation. The hacked gh2 footage and gh3 footage look strikingly similar. Would be difficult to differentiate them. The gh3 footage seems to have a little bit more noise though. You can download the video file here: http://www.postprod....shd/montage.zip --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Dynamic range test video: The dynamic range seems to be exactly the same as on the gh2 to me. No more details il the blacks nor whites, same specular roll off on the lamps at the top of the frame. BUT at least one bit of good news (most noticeable in the vid) the "shooting stars" bug/artefact is now gone. Hello everyone not sure this has been released yet so I took a couple of snapshots of the interesting parts of the gh3 user guide:

GH3 on hands for around an hour what do you want to know?
KarimNassar replied to KarimNassar's topic in Cameras
Wow. Eagerly look forward to the results. Also, try and colour correct and grade both the (hacked) gh2 as well as the gh3 video. btw, Which hack have you installed?
thanks mate but sadly it could have been so much better. I am disapointed like anyone else at the gh3 testers so far wich haven't released proper test footage but with the short time and setup I got I could have not done more. So many things I could have shot :-( But at least we got a couple comparison shots with the gh2 and that is something. I will grade for sure see how the footage holds up. The hack is flowmotion v2.02 -

KarimNassar replied to KarimNassar's topic in Cameras
Ok so that was frustrating. It was a public presentation with poor lighting conditions in a store. I was not a press member or anything and sadly people started to show up. Here is what I did: Custom picture profile with everything set to minus 5 except for color which I left at zero because I wanted to see color rendition. QuickTime 24p all I 72mb ISO 200 shutterspeed 50 voigtlander lens 25mm I photographed the important parts of the user guide in case anyone was interested. Even though it was a very frustrating setup and time constraint I got the most important thing to me : a comparison with my hacked gh2. I will share the results with you tomorrow -

Did another person test. Same ISO, same shutter speed, same aperture, same wb. Noticeably darker on gh3. Shooting with nokton 25 at f4.0 -

checked the manual QuickTime has the highest bitrate so recording with that. Ok for high contrast will try -

Ok so I just recorded someone on both. Same aperture same ISO same wb but it was noticeably darker on the gh3. Will double check and try again
