Well the 5D3 won't be too hard a workflow soon, especially now that ML .mlv raw recording mode is supported by FFMPEG. The only thing that would swing me towards the GH4 is the slow-mo, but you can ramp up ML RAW with fps override - not to 96fps though. Also, with a dedicated speedbooster coming out your lenses will become faster & FF on the GH4. Damn! Its a tough choice, but Andrew is going to release another article which, by the sounds of it, will deal with this exact question. How's the GH4 with pictures, because if it isn't as good as the 5D3 then that would be a deal breaker for me. However, the most important question is, Do you need 4K? & a 4K which doesn't have the kind of DR that 5D3 RAW does... Personally, wait for more [better] footage to surface.

OLPF for BMPCC or Hollywood Black Pro Mist against moire?
Bioskop.Inc replied to Axel's topic in Cameras
Yeah, the Digital Diffusion did look nice - it took the edge off, without making it look too nasty/tacky. Did you try looking for the Article that went with the Hurlbut test? He's always very useful for tips & tricks. What i do know about these type of filters is that once you stop down a little the effect isn't so pronounced. Or, the person who made the video i linked suggested a Tiffen hdtv fx, if the ProMist was too much (he was using a 1). Alternatively you could remove the moire in post by blurring the chroma channel - Neat Video does a good job. What i've found with the Pocket is that Moire is a Real problem when using RAW, but not so much with ProRes & so i only use RAW for shots that really need that extra boost - landscapes etc... However, I don't think you're going to be able to eliminate it completely - especially with some types of clothes (I've had it on a pair of jeans, which totally took me by surprise). Since you have the speedbooster, why not pick up a cheap Nikon Ai or Ai-s lens that isn't rated for its sharpness? This is a good resource for rating Nikon lenses: http://www.naturfotograf.com/lens_surv.html#rating -
OLPF for BMPCC or Hollywood Black Pro Mist against moire?
Bioskop.Inc replied to Axel's topic in Cameras
One reason for using vintage lenses is that they aren't as clinically sharp (across the whole frame) as modern ones & so you won't be prone to running into the dreaded Mr Moire, too often. If you insist on using these type of lenses, then yes a Black ProMist filter will help soften the image & reduce the risk of moire. But, & there's always a but, it won't always eliminate the worst cases. Although not shot with the Pocket, this person uses a Black ProMist all the time & the results are great: -
Rubbish! They ripped off the title sequence from one film & failed to recreate any sense of any of the Dollar films! Probably nothing to do with the camera, but all to do with the users. Perhaps they should've tried for something closer to this 20yr old ditty?! Could've easily done this in 2 days.....

Or that lovely 42 which is/was on ebay!

Hey Andy, does the Mitakon still have the blue spot problem or have they cured it?
-
GH3+4 are sharp (4 is sharper), but they both look like video cams - just nasty to my eyes. BMPCC should've been shot in ProRes (RAW really isn't the way to go) & it looks way more film-like than the GHs. Also, there's tons of resolution in the Pocket image & any noise that you do get looks v.grain like.

He has recently changed his FD conversion technique & there's no mirror hitting anymore. He is a fountain of knowledge & has never given me bad advice. He does recommend Vivitar lenses alot & has a 35mm f1.9. If not go searching for what you want & he'll convert stuff for a small price - added bonus is his Fluid aperture conversion. The fastest FD 35mm is an f2, so the 24mm f1.4 seems a better bet/fit. I'd be patient - go out stalking secondhand shops & ebay, as you can be lucky.

Canon FD 24mm f1.4 - anywhere from £500-800 on ebay (you could be lucky & it has the red ring you're after!) The Lens Doctor rates it, but his price for having converted it is £995 - interesting info on his website about the lens (scroll down) http://www.thelensdoctor.co.uk/page13.html This is an interesting/extensive list about M42 lenses & whether they hit the mirror on a 5D - but forget that as its quite list of lenses on offer! http://www.panoramaplanet.de/comp/

I assume when you say you've got a Canon FF, you're talking about a 5D & they are pretty damn good in low light. But it all depends on how low light you want/need to go. As you already know a v.good fast 35mm will cost you an arm & a leg. So you either bite the bullet & spend the cash or buy something cheaper/slower (f2/2.8) & get Neat Video to clean up your footage (NV really is that good & its sharpening tool is the best). The problem with a lot of the lenses mentioned is that they aren't great wide open, hence why they're cheaper. The Nikon 35mm f1.4 ain't great wide open, but the f2 is much better. I've got the Zeiss ZE f1.4 & have gone Russain @ f2 across the board for video, except the Helios 40-2 85mm f1.5 - i really like my Mir-24M f2.

WTF Rich! So there's a BMPCC inside that unit? In a strange way it kinda looks a bit like an oversized Polaroid or a small IMAX camera. Will be interesting to see some footage from it.....

The very underestimated problem of RADIOACTIVE lenses
Bioskop.Inc replied to Junior's topic in Cameras
Really! All this for a few piddling lenses? There have been a few Nuclear Reactor accidents & we don't seem too concerned about clouds of radioactive shit falling all over us. Get real, we live in a nuclear age & we're already fucked, because our planet has already been turned into a toxic waste dump! -
Yep definately the sharpest of the 3 & this could possibly be why you don't see it so often or they didn't make that many. However it is a bugger to align or should i say that you can't really align it properly (Redstan made a clamp for it so you no longer had that problem).

Fingers crossed i win the lottery tonight!

The sports car test that i posted was pretty much the same sharpness with & without. & there have been people saying that with the Metabones SB moire etc... rears its ugly head a lot more than without - so sharper doesn't mean better. As far as the other FRs, i think they are much of a muchness & getting anal about which is better isn't really worth it. I'll just be happy to use my Russain & Super Takumar lenses again, with the added bonus of them being that little bit wider & faster!

Had these conversion charts BM'd for a while, just in case you need help with conversions: http://forum.blackmagicdesign.com/viewtopic.php?f=2&t=14039 I'm still a bit dubious about that test, but as you said charts don't always tell you the whole story!

This looked pretty good, but the guy said it was an RJ but then claimed it came from Roxsen, so had the blue spot problem (the new RJ doesn't & he'll take an offer of $90-98):

RJ also do a M42 adaptor, which is coming to me sometime soon i hope: http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Pentax-M42-reducer-speed-booster-turbo-adapter-to-m4-3-GF5-GF6-GX1-EM5-EM1-BM-PC-/360827529560

Sorry, didn't notice that! Seeing alot of this going on recently & it does provide for a few bargins - picked up a cheap Mir 24M in mint condition last week - Yay!

This would be just as good as, if not better than the Kowa B&H & it started at 99p: http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/ISCO-OPTICS-CENTAVISION-2X-ANAMORPHIC-LENS-with-COKIN-72mm-Close-up-1D-FILTER-/141263994681?pt=UK_Photography_VintagePhotography_VintagePhotoAccessories&hash=item20e3fd7f39

Filming a Live Gig - If it can go wrong, it will go wrong!
Bioskop.Inc replied to Bioskop.Inc's topic in Cameras
Thanks Hans. Wasn't sure it was going to be that bad, but knew it was a problem. And to make things worse they now have these big speakers hanging from the ceiling, just to make sure you really can't get any sort of decent wide shot! More bummed about the missing sound & it was a miricle that i'd left it turned on on the camera. -
Chinese Focal Reducer does not fit BMPCC, otherwise, good!
Bioskop.Inc replied to maxotics's topic in Cameras
Yeah, I think we might just be. No this one...M42 to m43 (had to google to find it again - strange). http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Pentax-M42-reducer-speed-booster-turbo-adapter-to-m4-3-GF5-GF6-GX1-EM5-EM1-BM-PC-/360827529560
