  1. Realised my mistake, as its the distortion you like!  Then go as wide as you possibly can - you could even try fisheye lenses. Just remember that a x3 crop sensor will behave differently with that 24mm than a FF sensor.
  2. The picture you're most impressed with is giving what is known as a 3D effect (an optical illusion generated by a v.thin & shallow DOF), but not a v.good example.  Some lenses create this effect & others don't - its nothing to do with the focal length & it doesn't really translate to video/film (hence why 3D exists). I could take the exact same picture with a 55mm, but i wouldn't be so close to the car when taking the picture.
  3. Better forget the Speed Booster option for a bit (well unless BM don't ship on time!) & the EF version for ages...   A good option is to get something that's wide-ish with good resolution & step back a bit, or go anamorphic.   But really the best thing to do is to watch some films made with S16 & see what type of shot choices they make - you'll soon see what you can & can't do. Pretty sure most films don't go stupid wide v.often - mostly used for landscapes/establishing shots.
  4. Bm's shuttle will probably get an upgrade of some sort, it would be stupid not to supply something like Ninja2 in the near future - its not like they've given us recordable HDMI out for nothing. They must have a long term plan, which will mean delivering a complete affordable workflow package that will cover the whole production process. And as you said, the BMPCC is the starter option that will get people to think about getting ready for future[proofing] a RAW workflow.   I'll start with SD cards & ProRes - hopefully 45mb/s will be fast enough & there's always deals on Amazon etc...to get you through the door. My only Sandisk Extreme Pro is out of date already, as they have doubled in speed since i got mine - they'll get faster & cheaper.   As far as lenses are concerned, i always shoot anamorphic & have never used a 35mm taking lens thus far (50-85mm are my favourites) so i won't have to buy much - i don't/won't buy lenses to fit a specific camera (its a future proofing investment thing). Also, i'm using a cropped sensor anyway, so i'm used to every focal length being longer & it hasn't been a problem - just move back a bit, take your time & think about/plan your shots more (should be doing the latter anyway, as its not only about how the shot looks, but how it works overall to your piece).   It's going to be fun & exciting - fingers crossed!
  5. Yes, exactly! That under $1000 isn't really that realistic. Maybe external storage/monitors will come out to fit our budgets/needs - in the same way BM saw a whole in the cam market, perhaps others will do the same with recording/viewing solutions, maybe even BM themselves. In any case we'll probably have the whole summer to think about it & save up the cash.
  6. This was interesting about the possible sensor you're talking about. Go down to the readers comments & read the bits by a guy who has been using/testing this sensor:   http://prolost.com/blog/2013/4/8/blackmagics-new-cameras.html
  7. Well said Andrew! This Sharpness thing has been annoying me for ages - its all you hear & is completely irrelevant compared to the question of whether something keeps its resolution. Its all about resolution, resolution, resolution! This is true of Cameras & Lenses alike - "Is it sharp?" is all you hear. I chose my 60D for the opposite reasons to Andrew & for the photography side as well.   Here's a v.good example of a lens with high resolution, but not the sharpest - Angenieux 35-70mm (look through to find the 100% crop pictures on p3+4 - they're stunning!):   http://forum.mflenses.com/angenieux-2-5-3-3-35-70mm-leica-r-mount-t19877.html
  8. Shit, I'm just going to be happy with 10bit 4:2:2. I think the RAW capabilities will be a plus, but i think we'd be looking at an external recorder realistically & this will be probably be true for ProRes as well - an external will be more cost effective & you'll get a bigger screen to look at to boot.   Looking at SD cards the fastest is Sandisk Extreme Pro 64gb @95mb/s (nearly £100). Sandisk Extreme 128gb @45mb/s (same price as above) - but will this be fast enough.   Added to this, the fact that you probably won't be able to delete files in-camera. This just might be a little bit more expensive then we first thought. But as i said, i'm happy with 10bit ProRes & if the sensor spec (in another post) is correct, they could enable 60fps.   Oh looks like it has Timelapse feature as well! http://www.dslrfilmnoob.com/2013/04/10/blackmagic-pocket-cinema-camera-updates/
  9. The 50mm lens limit is for an APS-C sensor, i think you'll find that M43 is more like 35/40mm min with the Kowa.   Russian lenses are a good match as they have simple lens recipes & are cheap (quality/condition varies though). Tair 11a - 135 f2.8 (not really necessary if you're using M43 - it'll be too telephoto) Jupiter 9 - 85mm f2 Helios 44-2 - 58mm f2 (get the pre-set aperture one) Mir 1B - 37mm f2.8   If not Super Takumars work v.well, but are small & can get overwhelmed by the Kowa.   Also remember the 1.5/2m min focus distance, but if you have a good spread of lenses it won't matter too much - a weak diopter would be handy, but are quite rare at the moment (look for the Tokina +0.5 or if you've got the cash the +0.4 doublet or if Redstan has any left his Angenieux +0.25).
  10. Well the Pocket will be slightly larger than S16, so you should consider x3 for this little thing.   The problem will be how wide you can actually go - so until John Brawley posts some footage & tells us, we'll just have to wait.   Just really hoping the Speed Booster comes out at the same time - it'll be a life & cash saver! Especially considering the amount of lenses that will be bought up & the over inflated prices that will ensue!
  11. DPX files will result in massive file sizes (they will be individual frames), but excellent quality for colour - originally used for scanning film frames & now used for VFX. No sound, just great images.
  12. I'm editing some Anamorphic Timelapses on a v.old iMac with FCPX at the moment & its a real struggle! 10,368 x1080 image squeezed into a 2.66 rapper size template - it took so long to do anything, i scrapped everything and started again with proxy files. ProRes will be v.manageable, but am not sure if i'll be able to use Davinci Lite for the so-called DNG files the pocket might/can produce - damn , more saving for a new computer!  On the bright side i'll only need to buy 1 or 2 extra lenses for the S16 sensor size, an adaptor, a few extra batteries, some faster/larger SD cards or an external monitor/recorder - bugger, i hope they ship fast so i don't have too much time to think this through!
  13. Absolutely, run'n'gun is ok for a while, but it just gets boring. I bought the 54 for that exact reason & i think it makes you more creative with the shots that you produce, just because you have to think & plan so much more. Also, with the zooms you're going to open up a whole new dimension of shots to think about, practice & get perfect - you'll need a focus puller. But with the 4k BM you're going to have so much fun & produce stunning images! I think i'm going for the Pocket cam, if i go for the 4k it'll mean a new computer just to edit the footage & then that's just too much money to throw down all in one go.
  14. @JG That's just soooo big & is going to be awesome and you got the Foton as well! I thought my 54 & 40-2 combo was a beast, but this takes things to a whole new level! Bet you're happy you bought them before the whole BM announcement came.
  15. The guy @ NAB said End of July in the latest interview - so basically sometime in the summer, but it all depends on how fast they can make them.
  16.   No of course not, but if you were them wouldn't you? Also, read between the lines - in a weekend they could hack together something useable (not great, but useable). So, could they mash something together to extend their position in the market place? They sure got rid of their old RED One's quickly enough when BM didn't ship. Could be even more interesting times?   I just hope that BM have learnt their lesson & have really been developing these 2 cams all this time - hence the delays on their first cam. But just look at the Dan Chung interview on the Pocket - no it won't do RAW to an SD card (the rep almost laughed at the suggestion) & the cam turned itself off v.quickly (over heating?). Got to remember these guys would have had a script that they couldn't budge from.
  17. These are my thoughts exactly - will they actually deliver? Their track record suggests not! Also, the guy @ NAB (when talking about the Pocket sized cam) said that Raw couldn't be sent to an SD card - so lots of mis-information. Added to this, the sensors are all different ones & we haven't seen any footage yet (i mean come on!) - no answers to some of the most important questions.    Also, people are talking about these cams as being RED etc...killers, but just look at the different choices for recording you get on a RED. On another note, in a recent interview with David Fincher, he stated that he needed a smaller cam for The Social Network & asked RED to see if they could do something - that was Friday & by Monday they had a RED Scarlet for him.   I'm still playing the waiting game & would only buy the Pocket sized cam if there is definitely a Speed Booster & it works to an acceptable standard - I just don't believe the hype, it seems a marketing/advertising ploy. I am interested to see how everyone else reacts, but i don't think they'll be quaking in their boots considering BMs track record...
  18. Same here, this is the best news i've heard for a long time. They must have seen the capabilities for the Speed Booster & seized the bull by the horns! I was regretting not buying one of the Battle tested RED One's, but now i think i might have made the right decision - but this waiting game is very frustrating. Lets hope this ships really fast!
  19. Well this is what everyone has been waiting for, absolutely amazing, but...they haven't even really begun filling the back orders for their first camera! So, how can they release 2 new ones? We can only hope that the delays were because they're making these at the same time - if not we have a long wait ahead of us & who knows where the market will be in a years time.   The S16 is just perfect & priced bang on!   This is Absolutely Fantastic news! Lets hope this really shakes up the market & someone else follows suit so we can have some choice.
  20. Yeah i know exactly what you mean & that's exactly what i'm after. I think i'm there already, but am looking for something to simplify things up, hence the zoom & am nearly decided on a true parfocal zoom lens, which will make things much easier.   Finally been able to experiment with NeatVideo, since FCPX update, and the ML Absolute Zero setting - you can bring back detail without it looking over sharpened, a really subtle but important difference. For all the Canon bashing that goes on, I think most people are missing the point of the ML hack & the multitude of custom PPs. Have no more hope that they are going to bring something new out, in terms of video, and am now thinking more & more about a cheap 5D2 with the Mosaic Filter - they got it right with the 5D2 & everything else has just been a disappointment.
  21. You would've thought there was somewhere in London - Alan will probably know (but he's having a fight with Vid-Atlantic @ the mo, so probably won't reply).   Go to www.mflenses.com & ask the question on their forum.   If not these guys are good & reliable (not in London, but they won't bullshit you):   http://www.bonwcameras.co.uk/contact.html   http://www.thelensdoctor.co.uk/index.html     I was just about to go down the same route as you (Angenieux/Lomo Zooms) & any comments or pros/cons about the types of lens?
  22. Looking at his schedule, its quite Canon heavy. So Canon will be offering...   Firmware update for all cameras which will give clean HDMI & proper 422 recording abilities - Price £2000. LOL!   If it is a Technicolor device, then surely it will be something to do with film stock, colour & maybe editing - he did say he'd shot some footage, so i guess we'll have to wait & see.
  23. @FilmMan LOL! Gotta keep your distance from the monitors - i'm getting progressively more blind as age hits. I play online & am sure the people that are kick my ass are 12. If you want something a little bit calmer, i posted a music vid in the anamorphic section that's worth checking out.   http://www.eoshd.com/comments/topic/2362-yeah-yeah-yeahs-nice-anamorphic-video/
  24. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jmRI3Ew4BvA   Just got this via a mate & was really impressed - nice use of flashbacks and good twists & turns!
  25. Excellent! Very 1st person shootem up & so it needs to be like that - perhaps you guys are getting old too quickly or don't play enough COD!
