I was given a 64GB 30MB/s SD card as part of a gift, will it be fast enough for video recording on a GH3? I shoot in the 24, 30 and 60fps 50Mbps modes. I haven't tried it because you can't return it once opened. I'm able to return it but will only if I confirm that it's not fast enough, my other cards are 95MB/s and 45MB/s and they work fine. Thanks

I'm looking to buy a mic for my GH3, I'm currently looking at the RODE Videomic Pro, Panasonic MS2 (the mic they released with the GH3), ZOOM H4n and Tascam DR-100MKII I have pretty much already decided not to get the Zoom as the Tascam seems to be better in almost every way for the same price (also Caleb Pyke gave it a good review) The RODE is the cheapest option, everyone knows it's captures really good audio but it is also the most limited in terms of functions, the Panasonic seems to be a good alternative as it can switch between shotgun and stereo audio recording.. However it seems the audio quality is slightly worse than that of the RODE. I'm leaning towards the Tascam as it's similar to the Zoom but has a few extra features, like it has an internal battery that can record up to 5 hours as well as taking AA batteries, if your AA batteries die it will keep recording which is pretty great. Quality seems to be on par with the Zoom and both these options have far more features than the on camera options. But, if I get the Tascam is it also possible to use it in the style of an on camera mic? I'll be filming a sporting event soon and will be moving around a lot it would be really nice to have the mic on the camera somehow so that I don't have to worry about it. Also, I'm not sure how it would compare to something like the RODE for this type of shooting, especially since it will be outdoors. I don't know ho I would attach it to the camera either, some sort of bracket maybe? Any ideas? Thanks

Do people actually still buy locally anymore? (Not including the US), I import any electronics I buy from either B&H in the US or HK, both are considered grey importing. I don't particularly like walking into a camera store to have some teenager with 2 weeks experience and an EOS rebel tell me the discontinued GF3 (NOT GH3) is a "new" "top of the line" mirrorless camera that replaces DSLRs and that I can pick one up WITH KIT LENS!!!11 for a measly $899............... All I was doing was buying a new rocket air and looking in the Panasonic/Olympus display cabinet. Not only that, everyone should know by now manufacturer warranties are just a ploy to get unwitting consumers to buy locally and not grey import.. 1. Manufacturer warranty is limited 12 months here and has so many stipulations it's practically useless anyway 2. On some products, the amount you could save would probably cover a repair anyway should anything go wrong 3. Most companies that offer grey imports (including large electronic stores like B&H) offer their own warranty becausssssssse they can offer a product at a lower price and also make extra money with their own warranty which 10 times out of 10 is 10 times better than any manufacturer warranty. As an example, 5D Mark III costs $3,799 at my local camera store.. I could grey import it from a reputable grey importer, have it delivered to my door from their Australian warehouse within a day or two and save $1,000 brand new unopened in the box. If anything is defective out of the box they will replace it, they give their own warranty which they honor and offer the same extended warranty all the local stores offer. It's a no brainer. Oh and the reason I started grey importing? The owner of an authorized nikon service centre told me it's a good idea, that was when I had to get the only camera iv ever had break repaired.. And I bought that one in Australia.

What's the point of shooting "4k 60fps RAW" when you don't even have enough time to notice the quality of the shots?

I watched it because qt3.14

Were you shooting in manual? Did you change your shutter speed? Flickering from fluorescent lights can be controlled with shutter speed but as you can see in Nahua's video even a slight change of 1/3 will go from no issues to heavy flickering.... Oh I just re-read your original post and it mentioned you had been shooting in aperture priority, when in aperture priority the camera will let you set the aperture but will automatically take control of the shutter speed, this is a very bad idea for shooting video since your shutter speed should be the #1 thing you want to have control over. aperture and shutter priority or more suitable for photographers, when doing video try to stick to manual.. When shooting at 24/25p my shutter speed does not leave 1/50th. Since my shutter is always at 1/50th I adjust exposure 3 ways the main 2 (in camera) are aperture (this will affect depth of field) and then ISO (increasing ISO introduces noise into your footage) alternatively you can buy a neutral density filter, or fader/variable ND filter, ND filters block out light so you can adjust exposure without affecting depth of field. If you are uncomfortable shooting in manual, stick to shutter priority and set your shutter speed manually.

>Implying any digital camera has better DR than 35mm film Sure IF you are doing a specific shot that allows you to stack exposure (that's an incredibly big IF) then you could capture better DR........ However, no FF digital camera currently has the DR of 35mm film, the DR of film is right about 20 stops, while even the best and most expensive digital FF cameras are still several stops less than that. And no shooting RAW doesn't magically increase the DR that a sensor can capture, RAW will give you a little more play with pulling back "lost" info as opposed to jpg however the sensors are still several stops worse than film, after that it's no longer possible to bring detail back because it doesn't exist. So no, in terms of dynamic range a 5D (or 1DX or D4) will not "beat" any roll of 35mm film.

Do you mean flicker or banding? If you mean flicker then it's because of what shutter speed you were using.

It's your shutter speed.

Are any of you currently using or have used FCP X for professional work? The place I work for is still using FCP7, I am also using FCP7 but would really like to move up to something newer.. I am really undecided on FCP X or Adobe Premiere Pro, I currently don't know anyone that doesn't still have FCP7 but it's bound to happen eventually.... Which should I focus on? I personally wouldn't mind taking the time to learn FCP X for my own projects but so many people (on the internets) seem to be abandoning the FCP ship since X was released, either that or they are not upgrading at all and completely avoiding it like the plague.

I just bought a new iMac, now I can finally work with my files without having to go to work. Lel.

Someone told me it is possible to edit FCP projects in Adobe Premiere, does anyone know if this is correct? If so, how well does it work? I'm over Macs and would like to go back to PC however I work as a camera operator for a company that also gives me the odd editing job (which will increase this year).. They are still using FCP 7, I'd like to be able to take my work home if I need too but that would require me buying another Mac.. If I have too I will but I thought I'd ask and see if it really is possible too work between both editing systems (FCP and Premiere).. If it's not a viable option I'll just have to buy another Macbook Pro but if it is possible and works well (won't cause any issues) then I will be happier to buy a PC.

Just out of curiosity, if I wanted a top handle for a DSLR how would it need to be mounted?
-
I haven't used one but.. (I'm not a huge fan of Philip Bloom) BUT he has a pretty in-depth review, it's like 20-30 mins long I think.. He doesn't just go into the IQ but into the quirks of using it. Definitely worth watching if you plan on getting/using one I think.

If anyone would like to try grading different shots what photo style would you prefer it be in? I know bright sunlight is not the best light to shoot in but I might grab a few shots this afternoon while I am running some errands and possibly a few more at dusk tonight.
-
I am dreaming of an EF to M4/3 SB with electronics for aperture (and IS!?) control!
-
That looks great, what did you use for grading? I just gave the sensor the rocket-air treatment, no more dust.

http://we.tl/Vwx4S3h3JT That's the wetransfer file, however it is all 5 files together and was quite a slow upload.. There doesn't seem to be an option for choosing specific files when downloading.
