Complete overkill.. The GH3 is fully weather sealed with a full magnesium alloy body too....

This video illustrates the biggest flaw of the bmcc perfectly
/p/ replied to KarimNassar's topic in Cameras
The intention of the video in the original post is to show how far to the right one can shoot in 2.5k RAW.. However, shooting this way does also produce the best image quality out of the camera.. This isn't directed at the original post but to the others talking about "the best image quality" from the BMCC. -

There are other cameras available. -
Been a SONY fan for ages, tese cameras look great.. Looking forward to the rumored a-mount mirrorless coming early 2014.

Thanks guys.. What about this option? I was thinking that it might be smarter instead to by an IR filter by itself which gives me the option to attach a Vari-ND on top of it (but how much IQ would I lose stacking filters?).. This gives the benefit of being able to use a Vari-ND while still blocking out infrared with the dedicated IR filter.. ALSO since cameras seem to act differently towards infrared filters if I ever change camera and it doesn't play nice with the IR filter I could just buy another IR filter instead of having to replace a whole set of IR/ND's. Thinking about going for the Tiffen IR filter since Tiffen filters seemed to have the best results for BMCC in the AbelCine IR video.. And also going with the Tiffen Vari-ND. Thoughts? Thanks. http://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/658765-REG/Tiffen_W77IR_T1_Infrared_Filter_77mm.html http://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/813278-REG/Tiffen_77VND_77mm_Variable_Neutral_Density.html https://vimeo.com/55452414

I don't know why people still have faith in Canon, the 7D users are going to experience what the 5D2 owners experienced.. An underwhelming "upgrade" with only minor improvements and a few features that should have been implemented on the original versions of the cameras. If you want a 7D2 for designed for video buy a C100 LOL.

I think I'll shoot both, mainly ProRes but I might shoot RAW during the photoshoot they have lined up with the Photographer. Clearly not the best camera for events but if I get offered the job I aren't going to turn it down (I do have over a years experience shooting weddings - Photography though) I got the BMCC for other projects planned for early next year but owning one has honestly made other opportunities available. As far as the ND's go though I am not looking to have a matte box attached with a large cage setup.. I do have a ViewFactor Contineo cage that is awesome and it keeps the rig small.. I am not going to be using the Cinema Camera solely as a cinema camera, I'll use it similar to how I used my GH3.. Apart from the differences spec wise the only real difference is having to have an external battery which I love.. I don't get why everyone complains about the BMCC's internal battery it's probably it's greatest feature.

I know you can shoot cinematic video with the GH cameras.. I HAD a GH3, within 5 minutes of buying the BMCC (I sent the picture to a few friends) I had 2 job offers earning back over half the amount I paid for the camera itself. No exaggeration 5 minutes, sent picture out and got replies with job offers. One thing I learnt when working for another company as a camera operator was that people in general will make assumptions on your ability based on what gear you use. I try to improve my skills every day so I can't say my skills have improved since buying the camera but buying the camera definitely didn't make me improve just be spending money yet since making the purchase opportunities have become more available. I'm sure this type of discussion is similar to that of Photographers talking about how one doesn't need expensive gear to make great picture, but seldom do you see any "professional" working solely with EOS Rebels.

I'v needed some ND's for a while, I'v had a BMCC for a few weeks and will be shooting with it on various projects over the next few months and afterwards too.. My first job coming up is a wedding (I did make another thread on this, I am happy to use the BMCC on a wedding shoot and have set up a good rig to help combat any drawbacks the camera has).. This thread is specifically about the ND's though for not just the wedding but in general. After doing a little research I found out I needed IR/ND's for the BMCC as opposed to just regular ND's.. I want to keep my whole set up as simple as possible but I didn't want to buy a Vari-ND for both their drawbacks and price for a decent one (also since the BMCC needs an IR filter too). I'v based my choice off of the ND's found in the Sony F5, seems like a good idea but though I'd get some opinions before making the purchase. F5 has built in 0.9 and 1.8 ND filters, so I'm thinking about getting Tiffen 77mm Combination Neutral Density (ND) Infrared (IR) filters in 0.9 and 1.8 strengths same as the F5. Anything else I should consider? With the BMCC having a base ISO of 800 will I need something stronger than 1.8 ND? I would like to be shooting CLOSE to wide open (f/2.0 and f/2.8 on my lenses) both outdoors and inside.. Would I need something less strong than 0.9 for shooting wide open indoors? Or will 0.9 and 1.8 ND's be decent for both? Thanks.

I'll answer the ones I can.. 1) BMPCC is newer than BMCC 2K, does it improve in some way right? They are different cameras.. They both have pros and cons, they can't improve on one another as they aren't in competition with each other.. I don't think BMD were like "Ok.. We've released the BMCC, how can we make the BMPCC better than it?" 2) at low light RAW shooting (1080p) which is better? and which is the most usable ISO for professional use during night shots on both? 3) does BMPCC has image stabilization? 4) which is the crop factor in both cameras? 5) BMPCC is compatible with canon EF mounts and also with micro 4:3 lenses? I do not need adaptor rings? BMPCC is not an EF mount.............. Therefore it is not compatible with EF lenses.. You can get adapters to get EF lenses to work on m4/3 bodies but all of them (the adapters themselves) will need some sort of power solution, which is why they have bulky power/control units attached to the adapters. Some adapters (EF > NEX) do not need the attached power solution for the adapters as they have electronics built in that let the camera power the lens via the adapter. Currently I don't know of ANY EF > m4/3 adapter like this on the market (I don't think there are any currently available) However Metabones is working on an EF > m4/3 solution for their Speed Booster adapter, it will either have a bulky power/control unit attached to it like the RRM and MTF Services adapters or it will be like the EF > NEX adapter which means it would only work on the BMPCC and not the BMCC as the BMCC has a "dumb" (no electronics) in the m4/3 mount (BMCC works with the other EF > m4/3 adapters with attached power/control units) 6) does BMPCC and BMCC works with adaptor rings for old vintage lenses (example M42)? Both can adapt ALMOST any lens via dumb adapters, Canon EF is the hardest/most annoying to adapt as explained above.. BMPCC could IN THE FUTURE have a slight advantage (since no EF > NEX like m4/3 adapter exists they are pretty much identical in terms of what's available) boh can use the power EF > m4/3 adapters. 7) does BMPCC and BMCC have cropmarks (like ML) or some solution to shoot 1:85:1 or 2:39:1? 8) does its take photos? 9) I have a canon 50mm 1.8, that would be my prime lens on APSC because it's cheap and has fast aperture: if I choose to buy a BMPCC which lens should I choose now? Not a Canon lens.

Thanks Pascal. I am going to have 5 fully charged IDX E-7S Enduras (my own one is on order and I have another 4 booked with a rental place) I'v been told they should have 3-4 hours charge each so I should be set for power (I will test my own once it arrives), the Internal battery will kick in if an IDX battery goes flat giving me over an hour to swap out the battery before the camera dies. I have access to a Nikon D4 should the BMCC decide to play up. The BMCC is my own, I'v already used it for shooting some on location interviews and other footage, I am fairly comfortable with it by now. Obviously a BMCC is not the ideal camera for any event type shooting.. But I love the image so I am willing to put up with it.

Thanks guys.. I have one booked in a month (I'v never filmed one but shot several when I did photography before getting into video) I am trying to figure out if it's viable at all to shoot RAW (I'd love too) but I don't think it is, maybe in the future.. For now I guess I'll just switch between RAW and ProRes.. 3 hours of footage would be roughly 1.5TB of footage and another $1,100 on SSD's.. Maybe in the future if I focus on quality+price as opposed to just quantity I might be able to manage it if I factor HD's into price etc. Since I had never filmed a wedding I was curious to the amount of footage you'd get (in time) but I know it varies greatly depending on the wedding itself and who is shooting it (when working as an editor for wedding photographers I'd get some wedding photographers shooting under 1,000 images and some shooting over 3,000). I am also curious as to what rigs people would use mainly for filming the event (I know it's personal preference) but I think I'm leaning towards a Manfrotto video monopod with 500 series head as opposed to a shoulder rig, still gives good flexibility to move around and will support the weight as opposed to my shoulder. Just ordered the ViewFactor BMCC rig with top handle and IDX battery plate (and some IDX batteries) hopefully I'll be good to go for next month. If anyone has any tips or advice I'd appreciate it, thanks. Pic related, the rig I decided on.

Thanks Zach, do you think you could do a quick translation of that into amount of recorded time? Thanks.
-
Just out of curiosity.. For those of who who currently shoot or have shot weddings (more than 1), on average how much footage would you typically end up with at the end of the day? Thanks.

Thanks. I am still looking for a good battery solution and have been looking at the PB70 like you recommended. What I am curious about though is the "regulator block" that comes with it, do you need to use that? The battery itself seems to have a P-tap is it possible to go strap from P-tap on the battery itself to the BMCC? I'd like a cable longer than 12' which the power block thing has. Anyone know how the PB70 compares to other solutions? I'm looking at several batteries at the moment but can't make up my mind (unfortunately I'm not in the position to test them) I'm also unfamiliar with all of the brands since this isn't something I'v had to urilize before. I will link to the batteries I'm trying to decide between, some of the ones I am trying to decide between are from IDX (IDX claim they partnered with Sanyo/Panasonic to develop theirs), Teradek and Lanparte, either because they've been recommended or I'v seen them being used in videos about the BMCC, they all have P-tap because I'd love to be able to go straight from the battery to the BMCC and keep it as simple as possible, I'm hoping with a solution like this I can get a small waist pouch and put the battery in it while having the cable running out the pouch to the BMCC which will be on top of a monopod so I can move around easily. Some IDX options http://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/search?Ntt=idx&N=0&InitialSearch=yes&sts=ma&Top+Nav-Search= Teradek options http://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/search?Ntt=teradek+swit&N=0&InitialSearch=yes&sts=ma&Top+Nav-Search= Lanparte http://www.lanparte.com/html/108.html (about $300) I just wish Sony v-mount batteries had P-tap.. I'd just buy one of those. If anyone knows of some sort of solution for Sony batteries I'd be interested to see what it is. Thanks.

Just what the world needs, more vimeo videos on "artisans" with even shallower DOF.

Well I follow the rumors too (specifically SAR since I am a Sony fan) and I haven't heard anything about the DSLR type camera you just mentioned. I mean I know they are supposed to be going mirrorless with all their cameras.. And I wouldn't be surprised if some shot in 4k but I have not heard anything about the other specs you mentioned. If they do get XAVC and 10bit 4:2:2 I'd pre-order it the second pre-orders were available. A or E mount though? I think that's the question on everybodys mind at the moment.
-
What's the difference between SONY's FZ and E mounts?
-
Maybe they're saying the C300 is equivalent to a 70D.

By best I mean the best compromise of power + size + price. Since I'm crazy I am using the BMCC in a documentary style (got it because I love the image it produces) trying to keep my gear down to an absolute minimum for portability and ease of use.. I need an external battery but I am not keen on the ones that attach directly to the camera (unless it's very small) I'd much prefer something that I could plug into the BMCC but attach to whatever I'v got the BMCC on, tripod, monopod or even myself. Thanks.

Happens all the time, I remember a few years ago one of the Nikon books for one of their flagship cameras (you know the small books that they print out pictures that the camera has taken to show examples of what it can do?) was proven to be shot on a Hasselblad lol. And that Nikon add about their Coolpix cameras with that singer from the UK asking everyone to take a picture of him on the stage at the same time so he can take a picture of all the flashes... He was using a Canon Powershot.
