Recommend best camera for recording 8mm/Super8mm lenses
JohnBarlow replied to JohnBarlow's topic in Cameras
Ha Ha, Funny you should mention that, I have been toying with the idea of a custom GoPro Hero3 like the VF Novo.which is only rental http://www.radiantimages.com/index.php/cameras/hd-beyond/gopro/712-novo The Hero3 teardown is here http://www.ifixit.com/Teardown/GoPro+HD+Hero3+Teardown/12457/1 It would be easy to machine a new faceplate with C mount or Dmount and remove the lens and mount the sensor further forward. Only issue left would be for some kind Proggy to reengineer the FW to provide exposure lock. At the moment the EOSM looks promising if they can remove the pink focus dots successfully. -

I am looking at lenses from this list http://us.d-mount.passion.pro/ The EOS M interests me due to the custom ML RAW crops, also its throat diameter is big to allow some kind of custom adapter -

I dont think the panas will work, too big sensor in etc Maybe a EOS M in MLRAW crop? -
I have looked at the new Pentax Q7 which has 24/25/30 shoot capability, but the video is crap. Just wondering what forum members would suggest?

Thanks for your kind words. I can also add that the Spherize function can also be used to fake the classic Scope look by adding fake squeeze to the sides :) This is useful when mixing real Scope with deep focus cropped Spherical in a production.

Lee filters have a solution for the Nikon 14-24, so maybe that will work for the Yang 14

I love it, thanks for sharing

Very nice work Julien, the balance between tone and compression is just beautiful. The Ultra Star has a deep seated pedigree in the world of Scopes. It is actually based on the STOP Berthiot Hypergonar and has three elements in the front and two at the rear and is achromatic. The very front element is very thin like filter thickness. The non constant compression is a feature of the Hypergonar design and one that I particularly like, especially for narrative. If it is not your cup of tea, then it is simple to correct using the Photoshop filter Spherize. Just shoot some graph paper and choose horizontal mode and swish the slider until all is corrected. After Effects has something similar.

The Zeiss have superior optics but seem quite sterile in the looks dept. The clip above is devoid of flares and the squish you normally get during pulls with wide aperture, the later is obviously desirable but seems to be gained through a loss of the more traditional aesthetic.

First ProRes files from the Blackmagic Pocket Cinema Camera released
JohnBarlow replied to Andrew Reid's topic in Cameras
Not impressed. I think I will wait for a SATA (or similar) port on the NEX 5,6,7 etc or CANON M, which is one easy step that the Japanese giants can make to kill the PCC at a stroke. -

News round-up including a look at the 70D's image quality

Do we know what the RAW capability is at this juncture? -
Not sure if you can describe it as a benefit, it is an aesthetic that you either like or dislike

Seems easy enough with some examples http://www.4photos.de/camera-diy/Lens-Coating-Removal.html I remember reading an article on American Cinematographer about the film "Killing them Softly" which used a similar technique

Andy, your attempts to provide justification for the claim of 6feet MFD are insincere at best. Here is why: 1) Regardless of the indicated focal range on the transfer, silk screened on the side, the Cinelux have two physical constraints preventing sub 3m operation without dioptres. Firstly the inner tube butts up against the rear element assembly and secondly there is an internal metal obstruction. This double whammy cannot be overcome without a significant re-engineering of the design. I speak from experience as I have just completed harvesting the glass from a small batch of these units and have disassembled them down to the atomic level. 2) Cinelux are designed for F2 operation with Cinelux flat lenses. They also work with older units like Xenons and ISCO sphericals from F2.1 to F2.8. Projection sphericals do not have an aperture which can be adjusted apart from some Cinelux units which have F1.8 to F4 via thumbscrew. There is no way a projectionist can set F16! Besides, there is no lamp bright enough to support this Fstop even if it were possible because it would incinerate the film. Of course, dioptres are not an option with these units as they will cover/prevent access to the focus controls, wont they? An average lit living room is typically F2, 800ISO @1/50s. To get to F16 you need 6 stops brighter illumination. So how many 10Kwatt HMI lamp heads plus ballast are you recommending to pull off your F16/ 6Feet trick?????

Please refrain from perpetuating this mistruth Look at the specification, which is the same for the ES models http://transferconvert.co.uk/cinemania/cla_anam_2x.pdf "Shortest projection distance 3m" I own several of these and the spec is correct.

Input for C-Mount anamorphic lenses? Which do you suggest?
JohnBarlow replied to Rcorrell's topic in Cameras
My vote would go to the baby Hypergonar 2x scope. Search this forum to read the many posts on this optic -
C'mon Andy The MFD for these units is 3m or 10 feet. Unless specifically modified by you. FACT

I have an update bulletin on Rectilux No 5. The last weeks have been spent dismantling the first batch of lenses to harvest the very special Schneider glass which is a process not to be undertaken lightly. I have prepared the parts for modification/fabrication and yesterday delivered the parts with the CAD files to the precision engineering facility. The precision engineers have given a 4-5 week estimate for completion.of the first batch. After this period the lenses will be assembled, precision aligned and tested. Each one will undergo a testing procedure in line with my policy on quality control. Pricing will be available after the first batch is tested, when I will have the full costs including BOM and labour actuals on the spreadsheet. The testing procedure will be quite thorough (alas, no drop tests!!) and I request that should you have any specific test you would like to see happen, just contact me before the end of August. The end of August should be an exciting time, if all goes well and to plan. Then there is Rectilux No8............(more later)

I am selling another one of my compact Moeller rigs. This unit is freshly serviced and performs to factory specification. It has a Cyan coating. See photo below of a similar lens I sold recently (right click for big sizes) - Moeller 32/2x CinemaScope Anamorphot - Custom Lens Support for 15mm Rods/Rails - Sigma Achromat Diopter 58mm - Coupling Ring for 52mm This is a professionally serviced lens and has NATO MIL SPEC Helicoid grease assuring you of smooth focussing whether you are shooting in the Alps or Cococabana beach. The lens is free of internal dust, fungus and haze. Focus range is 5 feet to Infinity and using the achromat can get you closer to 2 feet. There is some paint loss on the high ridges of the focus ring and minor very faint cleaning marks which don't show in the footage. You can use any type of lens with this rig - classic manual, auto focus, rotating front element lenses and even plastic kit lenses. The support, once set up, will guarantee no slanted videos. The aluminium locking clamps are spring loaded, solid brass retention ring and heavy duty marine grade stainless steel cap hex bolt offers you the best quality. Price is £465.00 plus shipping. Returns are 14 days at buyers shipping cost. Contact me at the website below for a shipping quote to your area. or visit the ebay listing http://www.ebay.com/itm/130951632142?ssPageName=STRK:MESELX:IT&_trksid=p3984.m1555.l2649#ht_5280wt_1140
