the problem is that there is a good version of this out there. i personally would rather pay a bit more and have a sharp image. The metabones speedboosters gave me a beautiful image on my XE1 and were a joy to use. I used the light canon for video and stills and even tried to sell both off for super cheap. Every person that tested the light canon and excell +1 wouldnt even buy it cheaper because the quality was so poor so I sent it back. Canon and Nikon already give us soft video I dont need a focal reducer to do it also.. you know? I dont even like the way it looks when it softens the image so not even useful as a special effects filter. Just get a sandwich bag and shoot through that.

i bought the light canon and then kept it for this to come out. they sent me one and it was still awful but this was awhile ago now and if it is just coming out maybe everyone sent it back and they kept working on it...Hopefully it is better but the Excell +1 they sent me was still really bad. It was heavier and thicker the lens stuck out more out the back....anyways if anyone gets some good test results let us know.

I find this with canon actually. I hate the look and feel of them and dont like the menus or button layout. But this is because im used to Nikon and have customized my menu to have easy access to what I need. I find this with software all the time, ie: people dont use Maya because its superior its what they know and have know for so long. I have always used Nikon because of the sensor, same reason we picked better film stock. I dont doubt canon have something up their sleeve but as of now Im not a fan. The only reason I would prefer them is Magic Lantern.

Then extra DR in the shadows becomes useful no? At 14+ stops it's right up there with the Alexa (for stills) and its awesome to work with in post. Also its not bad for video either i get pretty good results with it.

If I buy Nikon glass I can actually mount it on almost anything. This is why I stuck with F mount. Its the other way around if I bought canon glass it wont fit to F mount. F mount is a crappy mount for the cameras but on Lenses its great. I rent out my Nikkors and Fmount lenses for use on Emount, EF mount, PL mount Cameras...Its actually made my whole system very configurable. So with a D800 and Kinemini I can use every lens I own on both cameras.

We under expose on Nikons to save highlights and can then easily recover shadows or back lit subjects. In real world practice it makes a real difference. I work with a lot of canon fans and when it comes to the raw files out of the d800 or A7R it really shows the weakness in canon sensors.

Went out to play with the Trump before sending it off for a few weeks. Tom was nice enough to demonstrate balancing these Rocks by the beach. Nice guy and I got to shoot into the sun for a bit. Nikon D800 DSO Trump 58 with 2X Oval Anamorphic aperture DSO TERRY NORTON’S FLARESEX MODULE

Follow Focus for older anamorphics that move in and out
Rob Bannister replied to Rob Bannister's topic in Cameras
SO an update, I finally got ahold of Helicoptersean and he is sending me one of the gears he came up with for the iscorama pre36. I'll let you know how it goes. He is looking for any info on how to make it any better so hopefully this is going to be the one :) Just need to pull the trigger on a Follow focus now. Might rent one in the meantime. Nice, did the values match up or was it still up to guessing?
-
If its counting down try dividing 1 by the stretch value by 1. ie: 1/1.33 = 0.7519 1/1.5 = 0.6667 1/2 = 0.5 Rob

Ideal focal lengths for anamorphic with full frame and MFT (M43)
Rob Bannister replied to burrencrawler's topic in Cameras
It has to do with the stretch factor. So at 1.5X you can get away with around 50mm on full frame and at 2X usually around 75mm-85mm. This is on most lenses Ive seen that us mere mortals can afford...the ones that are not intentionally built to be something crazy like a 22mm or 35mm with 2X stretch that would be one lens block. It really helps to think about what you are really asking for out of that lens like a 35mm with a 2X stretch is around a 15 or 16mm horizontally....think about shooting with the 22mm. Ive always been interested in shooting with the 35mm 2X lomo..if anyone has one around Vancouver ;) -
Van Diemen Cine-Iscorama Conversion - Review.
Rob Bannister replied to Tito Ferradans's topic in Cameras
Probably not a bad idea, its the tapered Isco that stops me doing it on the gear that goes on the lens. I wanted to do it to the smaller gear on the FF but have not found one to do that with yet. Tito moving to Vancouver? nice man. Let me know when you are here I would love to check it out and I could let you know some stuff around the city if you have any questions. -
Van Diemen Cine-Iscorama Conversion - Review.
Rob Bannister replied to Tito Ferradans's topic in Cameras
Great review, Im glad to see people are getting them back a bit faster now. THe only thing stopping me is that mine is paired so well with the Trump and sits inside making those 2X ovals......I really need a gear on it though, something with a bigger second gear would make the throw a bit more manageable. What lenses are you pairing it with after the Van Diemen Mod? -
wow so is this the one with the Leica rear?

I'll take one with the trump or you can see pics on their site. Rich takes great product photos. The trump is bigger then the trump but you get a lot more flexibility with it and it feels great for the size that it is. That setup is in no way a light weight, with the kineraw and the 2 lenses and support its a heavy beast. Oh and yes that acts as a very reflective sunshade and the Trump comes with an anodized black shade that screws in, and the flaresex module goes in there too...again way too many options you really have to decide what you want to shoot with or you will be indecisive all day.
-
Here are a few quick shots of the setup, its on the Kineraw so I could take the photos with the D800.

Thanks for filling in the technical info Rich. I do find the anamorphic difficult to adjust once it is inside. I may mark a triangle on the adapter ring so I could align it first then mount it in the Trump. It is a little odd but the image is awesome. Im trying to get enough time to shoot some better tests across the range of options in a controlled environment because there are just too many options available right now that the sun goes away..batteries die etc. More importantly I'm really wanting to shoot something with a little subject matter and get into this short film. Need to stop procrastinating! Thanks everyone glad you like it. I'll take a photo of the setup for you guys too when I get home later. Rob

Thanks Julian, for just hanging out enjoying the lovely weather we had here for a short period they came out pretty good. That combo sounds crazy, Might be better with the stopped down oval aperture. The second shot is like an F4 aperture disc. I have tried the 2X oval aperture and the isco and wide open its just a bit too much. Its so cool we can have these creative freedoms to play around.

Hello everyone, These are just some random snaps cut together using the DSO Trump FF58 with a 1.5X oval aperture inside, combined with the iscorama 1.5X anamorhic. Simulating the bokeh of a 2X anamorphic.. Anyways I thought some of the shots looked pretty good an wanted to share. Pretty cool being able to shoot this on a D800 and not go to wide like 3.25:1 Password is buds

Nikkor S 55mm 1.2 and Iscorama short test.

You will never get a decent anamorphic with character and decent build for that low. The Trump alone (not being anamorphic) is quite a bit more then that. you are probably looking more at the $2000USD- $5000USD which is still a bargain in my mind. You get a lomo or Bolex Moller look in a new design...for well under 10K and wow
