  1. Was about to drop my cash on an XT2 with 23mm F2. Think I'll save a bit more and go for this instead with the Sigma 35mm F1.4 ART A-Mount.
  2. X-T2 looks great for photography. If you're mainly doing/interested in video, I'd recommend waiting for GH5. Especially if the internal 10bit holds true.

Hey mate, that Neway looks like a great find I have the Blackmagic Video Assist, which I love, and was using it with my setup, but I found it to be just too big for the kind of rig I was attempting to design - hence why I began my search for a 3.5" monitor.   5. Hey guys, I wanted to share with you an awesome and affordable monitor made by IKAN that can, with a tiny bit of work, be used as an EVF. The main reason I wanted an EVF + loupe for my Micro setup was to create a fourth-point of contact between my Micro and my body. With my right-hand on the ENG grip, left-hand on the len's focus-ring, chest-pad against my right-shoulder, having the IKAN + loupe pressed up against my right-eye added that extra piece of stability I have been looking for - not to mention being able to monitor and pull focus perfectly in bright daylight. For those interested, the monitor is called the IKAN VL35 and can be had for as little as $259USD: http://ikancorp.com/productdetail.php?id=1738 I rigged it together with an old ViewFinder that I used to use with my A7S and A7RII. Having sold those cameras, I decided to use it as a loupe for my IKAN VL35. It doesn't fit the VL35 perfectly (as it is designed for 3" monitors, and the VL35 is a 3.5" monitor), but it will do for now. However, the good news is IKAN recently told me that they will be releasing a loupe specifically designed for the VL35 - and given the affordability of the monitor itself, I'm sure the loupe will be priced very nicely. As for the quality of the monitor itself - all I can say is that it's great Very similar to the monitor on the BMPCC. I haven't conducted any scientific or methodical tests yet, such as running down the battery or precisely measuring colour and luminosity, but I have used it plenty in the real-world, and it has functioned flawlessly and beautifully.   6. 6K, 4K - don't really care to be honest. Give me 1080P 10bit internal at 48/50/60FPS (minimum), V-Log, 5-Axis IBIS, for $1200USD and you have my money. But then again, the Blackmagic Micro covers all that (except the IBIS). The GH5 (assuming it has GH4 form-factor) would definitely win the ergonomics battle, however...

  8. I owned the A7RII and RX100 IV, and found the amount I could recover in the shadows to be pretty amazing - especially when compared to my old A7S, A6000 and D7100. I find BSI sensors have much better blacks and shadows, and more accurate colours and white balance.
  9. True. I don't like shooting full-frame, though. To be honest, 16mm is my favourite format. Hence my love for the sensor-size in my Blackmagic Pocket and Micro I think the A6300 is a much, much better purchase than the A7SII. Low-light is very good, especially in 4K. But with all Sony cameras, one must be conscious of the rolling-shutter when shooting 4K. The A6300 has the sharpest 4K image of all Sony cameras - even trumping the FS series in some tests I have seen. Most likely due to the 6K over-sampling. Buy the A6300, and invest your money in glass. Always invest in glass. Camera bodies come and go, glass will be with you for many, many years. And whats more, never underestimate how important glass is when it comes to your image. We spend a lot of time analysing sensors and whatnot, but many lose sight of the contribution good glass makes to a cinematic image. If I were you, I would buy the A6300, Sigma 18-35mm F1.8 ART and Sigma 50mm F1.4 ART in Canon EF mount, and the Sigma MC-11 Canon-EF to Sony- E mount adapter and Sigma USB dock (for updating firmware).
  10. Go the A7RII. I owned it, and though not owning the current A7SII, I owned the A7S - the BSI sensor in the A7RII produces an image that I believe is much superior to the original A7S, and everything I have seen from the A7SII. I find the colours of the A7RII are much more accurate, shadows much cleaner. You really don't need more than 12,800ISO (if not 6400ISO), which the A7RII does fine. Personally, I scrap a location if it needs more than 6400ISO (back in the day I'd scrap it if needed more than 1600ISO) - when ISO gets ridiculous, good chance one shouldn't even be shooting there in the first place.
  11. I've tried uploading HEVC many times to Vimeo. Never works. I really wanted to show the video I did for Blackmagic in 10bit. Thought HEVC was my best bet. Vimeo just kept rejecting it.

  18. Andrew, you are a legend! Thank you so much for clearing that up! 95% of this is going to be on a gimbal - was hoping to take advantage of the AF. I have the A6000 and A7RII, so I'm well versed in controlling the Sony system. I have the Sony 35mm F1.8 OSS. If the crop is, roughly 2x, perhaps I should grab the Sigma 19mm F2.8...however, I'm unsure if that takes advantage of the A6300 AF system well... Thanks again for the quick response!
  19. Hi guys, I've got a job coming up where the client is asking for 120FPS. Does the A6300 crop the sensor when shooting 120FPS? Been scouring various forums - some have said yes, no, x1.1, x1.9, x2.2... I can't seem to find a solid answer regarding this...

Hey guys, I pre-ordered the Video Assist after NAB, however the store I bought it from, which has shipped out a few thus far, and though being first on their pre-order list, told me today they are not sure why my order was overlooked and hasn't been fulfilled yet. Having sold my Atomos Shogun, I am in rather urgent need for a monitor. If the worst case scenario unfolds, and come Monday, my Video Assist order cannot be fulfilled, I am considering replacing it with an Atomos Ninja Blade. The Ninja Blade is said to use the same IPS technology as the Shogun, giving a 179-degree viewing-angle and 10bit colour-precision. I was always impressed by my Shoguns viewing-angles, colour, and software in general, and was wondering, though the Video Assist has a higher-resolution screen than the Ninja Blade (1080P vs 720P), at 5-inches, is that much of an advantage? Also, can anyone verify what type of monitor the Video Assist is? IPS? Or at least, what type of viewing-angle the Video Assist has? Really would appreciate any input/help Thanks
