  1. BMCC is 4:4:4. I have keyed 4:2:0 footage successfully ( 5D2 H264 ), but it takes me about 3x times longer, plus some shots got spoilt because my DOF was too shallow and the edges of actors were too blurry. With BMCC, the sensor is much smaller and your actors' contours will always be very sharp. You can always add DOF in post, but taking it out is impossible. Plus, with 4:4:4 you will be able to adjust exposure and the 2.5k will provide a better pixel sensitivity for your keyer.    In fact, if you absolutely, definitively want the best key in the world, shoot your actor in portrait mode...that should give you an equivalent of a 4K RAW 4:4:4 vertical resolution...the absolute top notch image for keying and compositing into something else.
  2. For perfect green screen work you can't find a better camera at the moment than BMCC with an ultra wide angle lens, it's $2k and its small sensor will ensure that your image will be sharp. 4:4:4 is the best possible solution for keying.
  3. People complain about EXTRA pro features? Amazing...
  4. iPhone with a wide-angle lens? You really want everything in focus when you are filming crowds.
  5. I haven't gotten a chance to see BMCC's imagery in cinemas or at film festivals over a length of a full feature film, - tests, music videos and shorts don't give me the real "feel" for what this camera can do.   Does anyone know of any theatrical feature films that were shot on BMCC?

    Canon raw V BMD

I'm using Lexar cards with no issues.
  7. Same lens and codec but different sensors and resolutions.   http://vimeo.com/76287852   Canon's sensor owns...
  8. I wonder what is Blackmagic's traditionally most profitable product? Canon releases their sales numbers publicly and we know 5D is their money maker, but I haven't seen such breakdowns of BM's business. Quite a lot of live/audio guys are their customers.
  9. 5D is hands down the best cinema tool I could possibly ask for. It is the tool that closest resembles a rock guitar for filmmaking...you just pick it up, and you JAM. With RAW we have pretty much everything we could ask for....and I'm sure BM4K will fill in the final gaps for us soon.
  10.   Soon to be joined by millions of iPhone 5S videos of cats in 120fps...;)
  11. Apple is the most aggressive consumer camera manufacturer ( yes, that's what they are now ), after 120fps they still have room to grow with adding megapixels, global shutter and higher dynamic range, ( maybe even RAW since they control the quicktime codec) .   They will most certainly go there sooner or later. Lack of interchangeable lenses on the iPhone is the only thing keeping DSLRs from cannibalization by Apple.
  12. Buy a 5D and focus on the story as you easily swap out memory cards and batteries. BMCC is not a one-man crew camera, 5D is.
  13. Apple spend years in secret R'n'D without making any announcements, then shock the world just as production is well underway. For example the iPad prototype was developed first, but it was kept a secret until they perfected the tech with the iPhone. Now that's patience, class and professionalism.
  14.   The medium format megapixel monster that Canon is currently preparing for 2014 release will apparently shoot 4K. CR reports that the camera is currently in testing and that the 4K mode is eating batteries. I assume that is due to massive compression happening inside the camera, so it probably rules out RAW.   It will be expensive, in $6-12k category.   But hey, at least it will ship before BM4K.  :D
  15. 5D3 vs Kineraw Mini from Cinema5D   http://vimeo.com/74372043   Looks like 5D is better for low light scenes, Kineraw better for bright daylight scenes.
  16. An update from Blackmagic on the 4K camera:     http://forum.blackmagicdesign.com/viewtopic.php?f=2&t=12192     Pre-Production sensors different from the Production sensors they actually received?   Deja Vu...are they saying they got punked by ANOTHER CHINESE MANUFACTURER?   this is not looking good...
  17. http://vimeo.com/71363086   The shake is particularly visible when you play the video at full screen.   1:11 and 1:13  - Almost feels like the camera keeps bumping into something. 1:21 - There is a pitching movement.  1:49 - Focus on the rocks, not on the actor, you will notice small but consistent camera shake.
  18. I think it's the product, MOVI guys had a lot more time to fune-tune their stuff. I only really need a smooth forward dolly movement, not planning any crazy pans and turns, so the DEFY rig might still work for my film needs, but I want to see MOVI M5 footage before making a decision.
  19. Check out Tinker, Tailor, Soldier, Spy, it has a bunch of tracking telephoto shots.
  20. Would love to see a short greenscreen test or unkeyed clip from the Kineraw in the upcoming review!
